way the world looks at data\, the value of data and the intelligence tha
t can be gleaned from data. Wherever you are in your Hadoop learning cu
rve\, you’ll likely learn something from this presentation. Even if you
are brand new (perhaps especially if you are new)\, this is a great tim
e to get some exposure\, learn about Haddoop’s capabilities and see how
  to get started. It’s not scary.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nSimultaneously\, the i
n-memory revolution is moving towards mainstream adoption. Sudhir will t
alk about how you can move past OLTP and OLAP and embrace OLEP (Online E
verything Processing) and what that means to the way we build cloud scal
e applications AND deliver value to customers in ways that are unprecede
nted and were not feasible up until now. He’ll talk about the solution c
haracteristics and the elements of the technology stack that allow you t
 o build these kinds of applications.  Don’t miss this opportunity.&#13\;

#13\;\nSummary&#13\;\nTechnical team leaders are often highly trained in
their chosen field. But they’re also often not trained in how to lead
a team. They know that leadership is just as important as the technical
side of the job (if not more so)\, but they’ve been left to figure out
how to do it for themselves. They’re frustrated because they haven’t go
 t the toolkit they need to get the best out of their team.&#13\;\n&#13\;
 \nIn this interactive presentation\, we'll cover the following topics:&#
13\;\n&#13\;\n- The benefits of having a highly engaged team&#13\;\n&#13
\;\n- How to engage\, enable and energize your project team&#13\;\n&#13\
;\n- Aligning the team on communication styles and workplace values&#13\
;\n&#13\;\n- Empowering the team through servant leadership&#13\;\n&#13\
 ;\n- Creating and sustaining a culture of high performance&#13\;\n&#13\;

DESCRIPTION:The DAMA Portland Chapter is dedicated to delivering thought
provoking data-centric presentations that will make you more successful
in your job.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMore enterprises are importing data from ext
ernal sources (which they cannot control)\, and integrating that data ei
ther into their operational systems or into their data warehouse. Data f
rom external (uncontrolled) sources can be problematic because (1) their
logical data architecture can be different\, and (2) they can morph the
ir architecture\, scope\, or definitions of the data which you receive w
ithout telling you. Hence\, the need for a rigorous declaration of expe
ctations in the agreement to establish that data flow and business relat
ionship.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis presentation will focus upon data import\,
and semantic data integration.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMr. Scofield has spoken on

DESCRIPTION:The world of Enterprise Information Management is going throu
gh a generational change – the emergence of Big Data technologies in par
ticular is offering new opportunities\, but also\, perhaps\, posing new
risks. One issue that comes up in my discussions fairly regularly is &qu
ot\;How should we start with metadata management?&quot\; Initial metadat
a management projects often have often foundered because they are wrongl
y scoped\, wrongly structured\, poorly justified or based on unverified
assumptions. The addition of new technologies to the mix isn’t going to
make this easier.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIan will put metadata management in con
text of changing information management practices and will walk through
10 &quot\;Best Practices&quot\; that have proved their worth in creating
early success\, with a focus on how each one contributes to project val
ue\, or cost reduction. I’ll focus on:&#13\;\n\n&#13\;\nJustifying metad
 ata management&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nManaging your stakeholders&#13\;\n
 &#13\;\n&#13\;\nScoping a project&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMarketing your
 solution&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nManaging for sustainability&#13\;\n&#13\
 ;\n&#13\;\nWorking with vendors&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMore info
rmation and registration available at www.damapdx.org&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#1

ent at ASG. He heads product management for Metadata and Application Man
agement and is also tasked with providing input across ASG’s entire port
folio. Ian has also served as Vice President of ASG’s repository develop

vendor that was later acquired by ASG where he was responsible for relat

DESCRIPTION:Fellow Lovers of Data\, join me at DAMA in Downtown Portland
on July 21st for a great face-to-face education opportunity. This month\
, we are bringing in Sanjay Shirude\, an internationally recognized tech
nologist to speak on the topic of &quot\;Implementing Data Management St
rategy through Data Governance and Data Quality process&quot\;&#13\;\n&#
13\;\nWhat you will learn:&#13\;\n- What is Data management strategy\, d
ata governance and data quality process?&#13\;\n- What is the relationsh
ips amongst them?&#13\;\n- How to begin developing unambiguous practices
to maintain organization data assets.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDate: Tuesday July
  21. Location: Downtown Portland. Time: 8:30 to 11:30am&#13\;\n&#13\;\nF
ree for members and employees of corporate members. $15 for non-members
to cover refreshments and speaker travel costs. $5 for students with val

rg) is dedicated to delivering thought provoking\, data-centric presenta
tions that will make you more successful as a data professional. We are
volunteer-run organization serving our local data community since the 19
 80s.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbstract:&#13\;\nData management strategy describes
what\, why and when to manage an organization’s data assets. While data
management functions describe where\, who and how these assets will be m
anaged\, without data management strategy the data management program is
rudderless. Without data management functions the data management prog
ram is haphazard\, and without effective communication the data manageme
nt program is obscured. These three process are\, in essence\, the “Locu
s of Cultural Change” - challenges to As–Is accountabilities\, decision
s and habits. It is important to know\, how the data governance and data
quality process simplifies the implementation of this cultural change a
nd assists in implementing data management strategy. This presentation w
ill walk through the process of developing data governance and data qual
ity practices to effectively implement data management strategy.&#13\;\n
 &#13\;\n About the Speaker: &#13\;\nSanjay Shirude is a practitioner\, c
onsultant\, and educator in the field of Business Information and Techno
logy Integration. He brings a simplified and balanced perspective to tra
nsforming data into integrated intelligent impressions through a career

DESCRIPTION:Why do Enterprise Data Warehouses take so long\, cost so much
and too often cannot answer my questions? &#13\;\n&#13\;\nAn Enterpris
e Data Warehouse (EDW) is a critical factor in getting a leg up on the c
ompetition. Organizations invest millions of dollars and thousands of p
erson hours designing\, implementing and maintaining their EDW. Far too
often\, those responsible for the EDW are disappointed that the EDW doe
s not provide a competitive advantage and costs to maintain it keep clim
bing. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis presentation will explore the reasons why so
many EDW implementations don't live up to expectations. We will also dis
cuss some ways to have a high probability of success in implementing an
EDW at a low initial cost and a low total cost of ownership (TCO) throug
h Data Warehouse Automation (DWA) technology. We will discuss:&#13\;\n&
#13\;\n&#13\;\nHow DWA significantly reduces time and cost\, while at th
e same time increasing quality and user satisfaction&#13\;\nIdentify the
industry leaders &#13\;\nDiscuss how DWA by itself does not necessarily
guarantee success&#13\;\nDiscuss how Enterprise Database Design Pattern
s coupled with DWA help ensure success&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe will cl
ose with a demo of how DWA technology works by building a data mart for
Sales with slowly changing dimensions and incremental loading\, generati

DESCRIPTION:There is now a second bonus data presentation at this month's
Data Management chapter meeting.&#13\;\nFirst\, Information Quality (IQ
scoring) followed by an Introduction to storing time-series data in Rou
nd Robin Databases.&#13\;\nJoin us for now two presentations designed to
make you more productive in your data career.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFor more i
nformation and to register\, visit damapdx.org&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Session 1
  - Information Quality Scoring &#13\;\nIQScoring is an assessment method
ology CQN is using across the company to help communicate the IQ state o
f key enterprise datasets and applications. It produces a simple metric
that is easy to communicate to business stakeholders and management in a
consistent way\, encouraging IQ conversations where frequently overlook
ed or excluded. This technique can be a valuable tool in the hands of D
 ata Scientists\, Analysts\, and Business Decision-Makers.&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nAbout the Speaker&#13\;\nRodney Schackmann joined Intel in 1993\, with
time in IT and business groups\, he joined CQN in 2010 where he is curre
ntly a Sr. Staff Information Architect.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHe is a frequent
presenter at Information / Data Quality and Data Governance related conf
erences. His history includes software development\, management\, consul
 ting\, mentoring\, and strategic technical leadership.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHi
s time at Intel has primarily been focused on Key Information efforts —
driving cross-organizational teams to better solutions with higher Infor
mation Quality results. Rodney currently runs the enterprise-wide Inform
ation Quality program for CQN.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Session 2 - An In
troduction to Round Robin Databases&#13\;\nAs technology professionals\,
we see a increasing applications for telemetry\, systems monitoring\, a
nd real-time trend analysis. In some situations\, unbounded storage of c
ollected measurements may be impractical or unnecessary. Round Robin Dat
abases are designed to store and maintain multiple time-series archives
at varying resolutions. They employ methods that allow the storage of mo
nths or even years of data.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe will explore one such tool
\, RRDtool\, a project started at the Center for Applied Internet Data A
nalysis. At first\, this open source tool helped with collecting and rep
orting on internet traffic. Since that time\, it has inspired many other
uses and tools. Our goal is to explore the retention decisions\, downsa
mpling of data consistent with it's business value\, and how this approa
ch is good for solving a specific class of problems.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbou
t the Speaker&#13\;\nChris Irvine is currently a Technology Consultant a
nd founder at Threeprong.com\, specializing in custom workgroup solution
 s\, B2B integration\, and performance tuning. He is a computer science g
raduate of Portland State University with professional experience in sof
 tware development\, system administration\, and IT management.&#13\;\n&#
13\;\nChris takes pleasure in applying technology to help solve problems
for a variety of businesses and non-profits. Recent projects meet the n
eeds of small business\, workgroups in large enterprise\, and also for g

DESCRIPTION:After a review of our previous meeting about the basics of Da
ta Visualization (Dec. 2012) we will explore some of the more complex is
sues of expressing complex business behavior in graphic form. You do no
t need to have attended the basics presentation to get value from this a
dvanced presentation.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIncluded in this session are the fi
ve basic chart types\, along with topics of normalization and the import
ance of context. We will then look at more advanced concepts for the e
xpression of metrics (such as cartograms\, step functions\, metrics whic
h go negative\, non-linear scales\, and lineage charts). We will discus
s the importance of understanding volatility in a metric\, and the expre
ssion of uncertainty and ambiguity.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRankings can be misle
ading\; we will show how. Tree maps are useful\, but heat maps can be d
angerous. We may look at using scatter diagrams to evaluate the correl
ation of market indexes. If we have time\, we will look at the expressi
 on of non-metric ideas\, including VENN diagrams.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout t

sk greater data chaos through a system of data silos\, inconsistent insi

DESCRIPTION:&#13\;\nThis presentation is an expanded and updated version
 of “The Multi-Skilled Influencer”\, &#13\;\nthe highest-rated session at
the 2015 Enterprise Data &amp\; BI Conference in London.&#13\;\nIt was
also the keynote at the recent Higher Education Data Warehousing confere
 nce in Rochester\, NY.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOrganizations increasingly
value individuals who have deep expertise in a specific discipline\, su
ch as Data Modeling\, but who also possess skills in other areas. This i
 s the so-called “T-shaped skill set” – depth plus breadth.&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nBecoming “T-shaped” is a goal for anyone in Data – not only does it ma
ke you more valuable to your organization\, experience shows applying sk
ills not usually associated with Data Management are an excellent way to
meet data goals.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAfter introducing the core ideas behind
being “T-shaped”\, including the two essential soft skills\, we'll look
at a variety of real-life examples where Data Management goals have bee
n achieved by applying other skills. In addition to showing how applying
these techniques has supported our goals\, we'll provide useful tips an
d frameworks for each of them\, with emphasis on four in particular:&#13
\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBusiness Process Change: Business processes work on
 &quot\;things&quot\; (a Part\, a Product\, an Issue\, etc.) which typica
lly move through the process as data\; we'll look at techniques to make
 the &quot\;data&quot\; perspective valuable\;&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\nApplication Requirements: Use Cases and User Stories are we
ll known techniques many Business Analysts struggle with\; we'll look at
a data model-based approach that overcomes some usual difficulties\, an
d is especially popular in Agile settings\;&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\
;\n&#13\;\nGeneral Business Frameworks: Frameworks such as the four quad
rants of corporate culture\, the impact of paradigms\, the enablers of o
rganizational change\, and the strategic differentiator have all contrib
uted\, often in surprising ways\, to achieving Data Management goals\;&#
 13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFacilitation: Questions that are s
 tandard practice for facilitators (&quot\;What do you mean by...?&quot\;
) can surface familiar data management issues of consistency and communi
cation\, particularly with senior management teams.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\

DESCRIPTION:The world produces more than 2.5 exabytes of data every day.
There is just too much information out there and traditional reports usi
ng tabs\, rows and columns do not paint the whole picture any longer.&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\nVisualization is one key approach to gaining insight from t
his mountain of data. Advanced Visualizations Platforms have enabled the
use of more dynamic and interactive business graphics\, such as real-ti
me dashboards and charts that update automatically as the data changes.
It enables knowledge workers to see the trends and patterns (along with
gaps and outliers) in the data that are not as easily identified in rows
and columns of numbers. Even Data Scientists are leveraging advanced vi
sualizations tools to explore\, understand and communicate insights\, al
ong with the actions that need to be taken.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this sessi
on\, we will explore how advanced visualization tools are being utilized
in the era of big data to draw valuable business insights and we will a
lso delve into some of the predominant data visualization tools being us
 ed by Data Scientists.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker&#13\;\nAmit P. Manghani\,

Evangelist with Snowflake Computing and the author of The Data Warrior b
log.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis is our usual monthly Portland Data Management U
ser Group Chapter meeting. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nFor more information and to r
egister go to: http://www.damapdx.org/ or our new meetup page at: https:
 //www.meetup.com/PDX-Data-Engineering/events/237139605/.  Please registe
r at one of those sites\, so that we have a count for our usual continen
tal breakfast. Walk-ins are welcome.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPresentation Summar
y&#13\;\nIn order to meet timelines to fulfill urgent\, unmet reporting
needs\, we built a virtualized Operational Data Store (ODS). This allowe
d us to deliver new objects\, quickly and incrementally\, so we could qu
ickly show the business users their data. In order to limit the need for
refactoring in later stages of the data warehouse development\, we chos
e to build this virtualization layer on top of a Type 2 persistent stagi
ng layer. All of this was done using the free Oracle SQL Developer Data
Modeler (SDDM) against a MS SQL Server Database.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this
talk\, we will show you the architecture for this approach\, the rationa
le\, and then some of the tricks used in SDDM to build all the stage tab
les and views very quickly. In the end you will see actual SQL code for
the virtual ODS that you can leverage for your own projects.&#13\;\n&#13
\;\nGoals&#13\;\n&#13\;\n• Learn what a Virtual ODS is and how it can he
lp you be Agile&#13\;\n&#13\;\n• Learn a data warehouse architecture tha
t can be implemented incrementally and in layers&#13\;\n&#13\;\n• How to
quickly build pattern based stage tables in SDDM&#13\;\n&#13\;\n• How t
o build complex\, pattern based views in SDDM&#13\;\n&#13\;\n• Tips on h
ow to use analytic functions to create virtual columns&#13\;\n&#13\;\n•
See examples of how to embed change data capture into a view-based ELT l
oading architecture&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker&#13\;\nKent Graziano is a Sen
ior Technical Evangelist with Snowflake Computing and the author of The
Data Warrior blog (https://kentgraziano.com/). He is a certified Data Va
ult Master (CDVP2)\, Oracle ACE Director\, former member of the Boulder
BI Brain Trust (#BBBT)\, expert data modeler and architect with over 30
years of experience\, including 25 years doing data warehousing with mul
tiple architectures.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nKent is an award winning speaker and
author having written numerous articles\, and has given hundreds of pre
sentations\, nationally and internationally. He is a co-author of four b
ooks including The Data Model Resource Book (1st Edition)\, and Supercha

DESCRIPTION:DAMAPDX March Chapter Meeting&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPresented by: Dr
. Bob Nisbet\, Predictive Analytics Certificate Program\, University of
California&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe rise of Predictive Analytics in business w
ill generate many opportunities for data managers. The Business Ecosyste
m has arrived\, and Predictive Analytics models are the “windows” into u
nderstanding its operational complexity. The Operational Data Store (ODS
) is an elaboration of data warehousing design to serve the needs of bus
iness data users better (cf. Kent Graziano’s talk). The Analytical Data
Mart (ADM) serves an analogous purpose to serve the needs of predictive
analytics. Differences between the organization of data in an EDW or ODS
and that needed to serve analytics efficiently are discussed. The discu
ssion will include some specific data transforms required by analytical
algorithms\, and how the “heavy lifting” of their processing can be comm
itted to data mart operations. An example of the blending of an ODS and
an ADM to serve predictive analytics modeling operations in a Santa Bar

DESCRIPTION:Presented by David Howell&#13\;\nCEO of Avatron&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nIn 2013\, the “Summer of Snowden” heightened awareness among businesse
s and individuals of the insecurity of data stored in the cloud. Despite
that\, people still routinely use Google Docs\, whose corporate owner p
romises to sell private data to its customers\, the advertisers. People
still store sensitive data in the cloud\, where data breaches are virtua
lly inevitable. Avatron launched Air Connect\, an alternative approach t
o allowing access of personal data from anywhere. Like Skype\, Air Conne
ct employs UDP tunneling to forge a direct connection to a remote comput
er\, even if it is behind a stringent firewall or on a dynamic IP addres
s.&#13\;\nWe’ll walk through the architecture of Air Connect\, discussin
g design decisions made along the way. We’ll talk through the joys and w
oes of launching a geeky networking software service on Kickstarter. And
we’ll talk about the ultimate demise of the Air Connect service.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nSpeaker&#13\;\nDave Howell is CEO of Avatron\, a popular mobile
app developer. Avatron’s apps include Air Sharing\, the first iPhone ap
p that allowed management\, viewing\, and printing of local and remote d
ocuments\, Air Connect\, which lets people connect directly and securely
to a personal computer without sending data through the cloud\, and Air
Display\, which turns a tablet into a computer monitor. Before founding
Avatron in 2008\, Dave was a senior software manager at Apple\, where h
e contributed to productivity software and professional applications. Da

DESCRIPTION:DAMA welcomes Sarah Battersby\, Senior Research Scientist at
Tableau Software to Portland on Thursday\, September 21st. &#13\;\n She
will be presenting &quot\;Cartograpghic Licence and Building Maps That W
ork&quot\;.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAlso Included: Continental Breakfast and Netw
orking with other Data Professionals! &#13\;\n&#13\;\nRegistration at: h
 ttps://damapdx.wordpress.com/2017/07/25/september-2017-cartographic-lice
 nse-and-building-maps-that-work/&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe live in a dat
a rich world and many of the data that we encounter have a geographic li
 nk\, such as a point coordinate\, an address\, a state\, or country name
. Maps are a key part of understanding geographically linked data and u
tilizing it in decision making. In designing maps\, virtually anyone wi
th a computer and an internet connection can be a cartographer – regardl
ess of knowledge of principles of spatial data or visual and cartographi
c communication best practices. The good news about this democratizatio
n of cartography is that everyone is empowered to explore their own data
with maps. The bad news is that anyone can make a map. While many map
authoring tools help guide the design\, it is still easy to unintention
ally (or occasionally intentionally) mislead readers. The variant of th
e truth that we find in maps is largely driven by choices that the carto
grapher makes in the data collection\, cleaning\, analysis\, and visuali
zation process. In this presentation I consider issues of how the map d
esigner and reader perceive mapped data and where “noise” can creep into
the communication to distort the intended message.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThrou
gh the presentation\, we will explore a number of data and visualization
challenges that citizen (and professional) cartographers wrestle with e
very day. Fortunately some of the big challenges in cartography have so
lutions – if you know where to look. Unfortunately\, some also fall in
the damned-if-you-do\, damned-if-you-don’t category – but you had better
have the critical understanding skills needed to consider the implicati
ons either way. No map is perfect\, but some are much better than other
 s. In this talk we will look at good and bad examples\, the problems an
d solutions\, and discuss about pathways to success and enlightenment th
rough better mapping. Or\, at least we can just try to learn to stop wo
rrying and love maps.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe presentation will be colored wi
th a psycho-geographic perspective garnered from way too many years teac
hing cartography and GIS fundamentals to unsuspecting college youths\, a
nd my more recent years at a software company designing a product to hel
p people make better decisions without requiring years of cartographic s
 tudy.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the Speaker:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSarah Battersby i
s a research scientist at Tableau Software. Her primary area of focus is
cartography\, with an emphasis on cognition. Her work emphasizes how we
can help people visualize and use spatial information more effectively.
Her research has covered a variety of areas\, including perception in d
ynamic map displays\, geospatial technologies and spatial thinking abili
ties\, and the impact of map projection on spatial cognition. She works
closely with the maps development team.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSarah earned her
PhD in Geography in 2006 from the University of California at Santa Barb
ara. She is a member of the International Cartographic Association Commi
ssion on Map Projections\, and is a Past President (2015 – 2016) of the
Cartography and Geographic Information Society – a society composed of e
ducators\, researchers and practitioners involved in the design\, creati
on\, use and dissemination of geographic information.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSar

DESCRIPTION:Join your fellow Portland Lovers of data for a morning of dat
a education and networking at our usual 3rd Thursday (February 15th) cha
pter meeting at the Standard Insurance classrooms in downtown Portland.
Mark Wheeler from PSU will talk about Business Applications of Blockcha
in Technology.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAttendance is free for DAMA Members and Em
ployees of Corporate Members. Students $5 with ID\; $15 others. You ca

ts.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOverview - Business Applications of Blockchai
n Technology &#13\;\nPresented by Mark Wheeler\, Portland State Universi
ty&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBlockchain technology is being talked about as one of
the next big innovations to take hold across multiple industries. Busine
sses who focus on transactions\, contracts\, and assets management are j
ust a few of the initial sectors of the economy which will be disrupted.
As the underlying technology begins to take hold\, time-consuming and l
abor-intensive functions will be replaced by automated and “always on” s
mart processes. Centralized models of trust and authenticity will be rep
laced by decentralized services and crowd-based consensus algorithms.&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\nThere will not be one blockchain but millions\, each built
on an application-specific architectures. Any store of information that
requires exchange or validation across indirectly related entities will
reside on a blockchain. Blockchains are safe\, secure\, and immutable —
but all blockchains are not created equal. We will explore the subject
by examining several current generations of blockchain implementations.&
