DESCRIPTION:Like many foundations\, MMT has been building a &quot\;knowle
dge management&quot\; system to archive information in an accessible way
to help us be the best grantmakers we can be. But we've been approachin
g this task with a bigger end in mind.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhy\, we asked our
selves\, would we set up a system that only MMT could use when the need
for good information is shared by other foundations... and nonprofit org
anizations and public agencies and official decision makers and citizen
volunteers and... in fact\, everyone working for the common good?? Would
n't that be a smarter investment for us to make?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhat if
there was a place where we could all exchange what we learn as we go abo
ut our daily business? What if nonprofits could see the data and informa
tion that foundations use in their due diligence process? What if organi
zations and people could easily determine which foundations' interests m
atch their project goals? What if foundations could quickly see what gro
ups are working on an issue they are investigating? And so on...&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nWell\, we are building such a place. A place where people and or
ganizations can connect about subjects and places. A place called connec
tipedia...&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWant to know more? Want to see connectipedia i
n action? Want to find out how you can be part of all this? Attend the p
 ublic launch event at:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n2 - 3:30 p.m.\, Tuesday\, June 10&
#13\;\nJean Vollum Natural Capital Center&#13\;\naka Ecotrust (second fl
oor conference center)&#13\;\n721 NW Ninth Ave.&#13\;\nPortland OR 97209
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe would love you to be part of this event and celebrati
on. Several renowned geeks will be there! We're not requiring folks to r
egister\, but if you plan to attend\, please send a quick rsvp email to
marie@mmt.org.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf you can't make it to Ecotrust\, you can
still witness the launch. We plan to record the event so anyone in our
corner of the world can make time for connectipedia. (More details about
watching it remotely to come.)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAfter June 10th\, connect
ipedia will be open for business!\n\nImported from: http://calagator.org

Simulation Optimization for Climatic Passive Heating and Cooling Design
 : Advanced Materials\, Workflows\, and Tools&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJeremiah Cro
ssett\, Senior Analyst\, Phase Change Energy Solutions Inc. and Founder
of NRGSIM Inc. and Eric Youngson\, President and Founder of Succession E
cological Services (SES)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nModern low energy buildings requ
ire innovative strategies that maintain occupant comfort while reducing
energy consumption through the use of passive systems and sophisticated
materials. Historically\, building design has focused on active systems
that increase complexity\, drive costs higher\, and result in environmen
tal degradation. This presentation focuses on early load reduction that
allows for smaller\, more efficient mechanical systems through the optim
ization of building envelope design. Through the use of Pareto front ana
lysis\, designs are able to achieve optimal combinations of window\, ins
ulation\, and phase change material (PCM) to achieve a desired balance b
etween energy performance and cost objectives for various climate zones.
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nNew tools developed in part by the presenters will be de
monstrated using the jE+ EA cloud optimization Energy Plus shell\, the &
quot\;Eppy&quot\; Python scripting package\, and a custom version of Ene
rgy Plus with enhanced PCM features. In addition\, a brief demonstration
of the NRGSIM web based energy modeling application will be provided.\n

 eo&#13\;\n&#13\;\n++++++++++++++&#13\;\n&#13\;\n[1] HOWL: 3D/4D mapping
and visualization of Oregon’s wildlands&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe HOWL (Highlig
hting Oregon's WildLands) project aims to create an interactive 3D/4D ma
pping and visualization tool for presenting spatio-temporal information
relevant to the preservation of wilderness and wildlife protection in Or
egon. HOWL will be available to conservation advocates (e.g.\, Oregon Wi
ld) and the general public\, to improve dissemination\, understanding an
d interpretation of multiple publicly available data sources. Candidate
data sets include boundaries of current and proposed wilderness areas\,
wild and scenic river areas\, national forests and other public lands\,
wildfire events\, wildlife migrations\, deforestation history\, and sate
llite imagery\, to name a few.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHOWL is a web application
being built using CesiumJS\, a powerful open source 3D mapping and visua
lization library\, which enables incorporating not only realistic terrai
n modeling\, but also volumetric symbols to build interactive 3D themati
c maps. In addition\, HOWL will leverage the temporal visualization capa
bilities of CesiumJS to add the 4th dimension\, thus enabling dynamic pl
ayback of related past and/or predicted events. Visualizations examples
include wildfire history in old growth forest areas\, wildlife migration
  records\, and deforestation chronicles.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis presentatio
n dives into details of building HOWL by leveraging open source front-en
 d components (e.g.\, CesiumJS\, jQuery\, Bootstrap)\, back-end tools (e.
 g.\, MapShaper\, toGeoJson\, TopoJSON\, node.js) and workflows for data
acquisition\, transformation\, and integration. The presentation address
es key design decisions\, technical challenges and future developments.\

DESCRIPTION:Monthly meeting of the Portland open source GIS group. Proje
cts big and small are usually presented monthly along with rousing conve
rsation and discussion. All are welcome\, no need to RSVP - our group r
anges from the geo-curious to the überhackers so bring your ideas and qu
estions!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe have a couple of really interesting topics th
 is month:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n- We'll check out &quot\;Mapping Inequality&quo
t\; [1]\, a project out of University of Richmond\, University of Maryla
nd\, Virginia Tech and John Hopkins. The project uses Leaflet and CartoD
B to display georeferenced maps and redlining data from in the late 30's
  - with a focus on redlining and abrasive\, unfiltered racist language t
hat has directly influenced the formation of neighborhoods today.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\n- We also have a very cool spatial analysis presentation from K
evin that will show how he used PostGIS\, QGIS and Geopy to calculate th
e most remote locations in Oregon and Washington\, along the lines of wh
at Project Remote [2] has been doing for the whole lower 48. Kevin's pro
ject also used Leaflet\, MapboxGL JS and Turf for visualization.&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nWe'll also cover the latest happenings in geodata\, upcoming ge
oevents and bring your own geo-show and tell\, so if you see something i
 nteresting in your geo-travels be sure to bring it along to share!&#13\;
\n&#13\;\nAs always\, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome.&#

DESCRIPTION:That PLUG Clinic you like is coming back into style!&#13\;\n&
#13\;\nPortland Linux/Unix Group has run a monthly Clinic to help people
with their Linux computers through most of its 30 year life. The Clinic
has been on hiatus since the last one on March 2020\, for obvious reaso
ns and then for lack of a venue. However\, this month that has changed\,
through a generous offer from Willamette University to use their space
in the Ecotrust Building in NW Portland. In addition to help with your e
veryday Linux computer\, this month we will also have someone from the P
ostmarketOS community on hand to help install Linux on your Android or o
ther supported or perhaps semi-supported devices.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf you
