DESCRIPTION:David Wheeler will be giving his &quot\;Unit Test Your Databa
se&quot\; talk. It was well-received at Open Source Bridge\; now he's gi
ving it to an audience of Agile practitioners.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe’re all
used to unit testing our applications by now. The Extreme and Agile prog
ramming movements have done a great deal to promote unit testing\, to th
e extent that many of us are now dependent on tests to assure that our a
pplications work reliably. But how often do we test the database underly
ing our applications? Given that the database\, as the repository for al
l of the knowledge and data for an application\, just might be the singl
e most important part of that application\, the time for standardized da
tabase unit testing has come.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis talk promotes the prac
tice of writing and running unit tests that directly test the schema\, s
torage\, and functionality of application databases. Following a review
of the available PostgreSQL unit testing frameworks\, we’ll review examp
 les of testing tables\, views\, columns\, constraints\, indexes\, trigge
rs\, and functions. The idea is to promote complete test coverage every
aspect of a database\, independent of application unit tests\, to ensure
reliably canonical data integrity.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPizza and networking

DESCRIPTION:The Oregon chapter of the Product Development and Management
Association (PDMA) invites you to its first 2010 Learning and Networking
Event\; &quot\;Proven Techniques Turning Customer Requirements into Suc
cessful Products! Using 'Voice of the Customer' processes to develop pro
ducts that meet REAL market needs.&quot\;&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA major compone
nt of business success is developing products that meet customer needs a
nd provide superior value. Meeting customer needs requires that those ne
eds be understood. The &quot\;voice of the customer&quot\; (VOC) is the
term to describe the stated and unstated customer needs or requirements.
The voice of the customer can be captured in a variety of ways: direct
discussion or interviews\, surveys\, focus groups\, customer specificati
 ons\, observation\, warranty data\, field reports\, etc.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
This program will explore the practical side of collecting and using the
VOC. Frank Binnendyk\, and expert in VOC and a founder partner of Custo
mer Alignment Consulting will explain the basics of this market research
methodology. Then\, three representatives from companies that have used
the VOC research will provide a users' perspective. They will explain w
hy and how they did it\; how they used the information gathered\; if it
worked well or didn't meet their expectations and what were their VOC le
ssons learned. Ed de la Fuente VP of Marketing from Aperion Audio\, John
Williams Product Marketing Manager from FEI and Robert Buxton a High Te
ch B2B Professional will present company examples. The contrast between
these types of companies will provide insights into how a VOC program ca
n be scaled and adapted to meet the needs and resources of any company.&

y smart people work hard to make them successful. Why is that? The journ
ey from a glimmer of a new idea to a commercially winning product is lon
g and arduous\, with many steps and decisions along the way. This event
will identify the most common causes of new product failure and propose
action to avoid those problems in the future. The discussion will range
from the fuzzy front end to sales support and from individual to team to
market challenges.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nTwo of the most experienced Product
Managers in Portland\, with combined new product experience of over 50 y

xchange ideas on this important and challenging topic. &#13\;\n &#13\;\
nEveryone involved in product planning and product development from eith

\nHow can engineers advance their career? How can managers develop a hig
 h performing team? How can both succeed at the same time? &#13\;\n&#13\;
\nDate: February 15th\, 2012&#13\;\n&#13\;\nEveryone seems to have an op
inion on what drives success – more education\, the right project\, work
ing with leading edge technology\, chemistry\, knowing the right person\
, networking\, and more – but the truth is what works for one person oft
en doesn’t work for another. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nCareer Models presents a m
ultidimensional framework of unwritten rules\, unique personal strengths
\, and the role of emotions common to successfully advancing career stag
es. The framework describes what contributes to a successful career at a
ny career stage. This presentation will help engineers and managers to m
ake informed decisions and avoid missteps that can derail a career. Mana
gers will learn what contributes to successful staff development and pro
 ject completion. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker(s): John Prohodsky\, &#13\;\n&#

\n&#13\;\nThe pace of technology progress is continually increasing. In

Off\, future vehicles are going to be more complex\, more durable\, more

with our eyes what commercial vehicles in 2020 will look like. It will

DESCRIPTION:Summer is officially come to an end\, so it's time to start b

r summer and is ready for the rain.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe next PDX Hardware
Startup Meetup is going to be October 28th\, at 5:30-8:00 PM.&#13\;\n&#
13\;\nR&amp\;D Plastics is a local Plastic Injection Molder and is going
to come talk about plastic injection molding. Here is an abstract of th
eir presentation: &#13\;\n&#13\;\n&quot\;As a new or infrequent designer
/developer of injection molded products it can be very difficult to unde
rstand the impact of design features\, material selection\, and tool con
struction on the cost and lead-time of your products. The decisions you
make have a great impact on part cost and tool build lead-times.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nIn this session\, we will discuss what to expect when designing
and developing a plastic injection molded part. We will provide exampl
es that show the impact of good design decisions and how they greatly im
prove the product development cycle. Your understanding of the injectio
n molding workflow and what you should expect from your injection moldin
g partner will guide you through good decision making for a successful p
 roduct release.&quot\;&#13\;\n&#13\;\nCharlie O’Bosky &amp\; Kyle Tarr w

DESCRIPTION:The hardware revolution is just beginning. Nest\, Ring\, Mell

 h a massive library of peripheral drivers for sensors\, LCDs\, etc.\, an
d a handrolled API that makes building smart hardware a plug and play ex

DESCRIPTION:Temporal databases let you record history: either a history o
f the database (what the table used to say)\, a history of the thing its
elf (what it used to be)\, or both at once. The theory of temporal datab
ases goes back to the 90s\, but standardization has only just begun with
some modest recommendations in SQL:2011\, and database products (includ
ing Postgres) are still missing major functionality.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis
talk will cover how temporal tables are structured\, how they are queri
ed and updated\, what SQL:2011 offers (and doesn't)\, what functionality
Postgres has already\, and what remains to be built.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPau
l started programming on a Tandy 1000 at age 8 and hasn't been able to s
top since. He helped build one of the Mac's first web servers in 1994 an
d has founded software companies in politics and technical hiring. He wo

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Grant Holly&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis month I will be demo
nstrating using non-blocking IO database access using Scala and the Slic
k library. No really\, the library is called Slick AND it is very cool
to use. Slick and Scala are great for working with Postgres with either
straight SQL\, or using the FRM (that’s a Functional Relation Mapper li
ke in functional programming). After Hannah gave a great talk talk abou
 t Python\, Postgres\, and ORMs\, I got to thinking that I could do a lan

ations in planning for disaster recovery in order to maintain business c
ontinuity. There are solutions available that can help you achieve your
backup and recovery objectives by taking advantage of PostgreSQL feature
s\, such as point-in-time recovery\, and help implement retention polici
es.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAlso learn how to take advantage of PostgreSQL’s repl
ication features to keep your database highly-available\, and the basic
cluster architectures to consider to keep a PostgreSQL cluster up and ru
nning.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMark works at 2ndQuadrant as a consultant for Engl
ish Speaking Territories\, based out of Oregon. He is a Contributor to P
ostgreSQL\, co-organizer of the Portland PostgreSQL User Group\, and ser
ves as a Director and Treasurer for the United States PostgreSQL Associa

DESCRIPTION:Jackson will discuss the basics of GIS\, and the current envi
ronment in which enterprise spatial analytics are performed. Considering
the many pitfalls of this current system\, he will discuss how FOSS too
ls – especially PostgreSQL/PostGIS – are vitally important for modern sp
atial analytics. In addition to the PostGIS extension\, Jackson will tal
k about network routing using the PgRouting extension and the interface
between R and PostgreSQL. This talk will act more as a showcase of GIS a
nd “spatial SQL” within PostgreSQL than it will nitty-gritty database de
velopment.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJackson Voelkel is a Health Data Analyst on Ka
iser Permanente’s GIS Team as well as an Adjunct Professor of Geography
at Portland State University. He focuses on developing infrastructure fo
r and performing advanced spatial analytics across healthcare\, environm
ent\, urban planning\, utilities\, and econometrics. He teaches courses
on advanced spatial analytics in R as well as spatial database design wi

DESCRIPTION:This month I am going to be talking about my current work on
sharding large mysql databases with Vitess. My team has been on a journ
ey towards splitting our largest mysql databases and I want to share my
experiences and lessons learned. We are going to look at the problems a
nd possible solutions to scaling reads and writes in relational database
s.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nVitess is an open source project born at youtube to sc
ale their largest and most critical databases. It has been adopted in a
s a Cloud Native Compute Foundation incubator project. With PostgreSQL
on the medium-term road map\, let’s take a look at what we have been abl
e to do with mysql.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHi its me Grant. I work on the datab
ase engineering team at New Relic. I’ve been using Postgres in producti
on since 9.2. I co-organize the Postgres user group in Portland with Ma
 rk Wong.\n\nTags: pdxpug\, postgres\, postgresql\, mysql\, vitess\n\nImp

DESCRIPTION:pg_top was born in 2007 from a fork of the unixtop\, a termin
al program displaying top processes on the system\, where pg_top focuses
on the processes with the PostgreSQL database you are connected to. Rec
ently pg_systat was forked from systat to display additional database st
atistics.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThese tools have can help do more such as explo

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Gabrielle Roth &amp\; Michelle Franz&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nIn February\, long-term PDXPUGers Michelle Franz &amp\; Gabrielle Roth
return to discuss DBLINK and FDW\, two methods of accessing data that’s
outside your database. We’ll briefly mention SQL/MED on the way\, and te
ll a couple of bad (Dad) jokes.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe’ll cover use (and mis-
use) cases\, configuration of each\, and interesting quirks. Gabrielle w
ill attempt a live demo of file_fdw and postgres_fdw. You’re welcome to
follow along if you’d like\, just show up with a couple of Pg databases:
they can be on the same cluster (or container or RDS instance or what h
ave you) or different ones\, doesn’t really matter. One of them should h
ave at least one table with data in it.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the speaker
s:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFrom embedded systems to UI to relational database pro
gramming\, Michelle’s running an interesting path through the software w
orld. Working with databases is her current episode\, with some programm
ing\, some DBA\, some SysAdmin and a healthy dose of learning agile. She
’s very quickly come to appreciate and enjoy working with Postgres and h
er work has allowed her to learn from some super talented database exper
ts.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGabrielle has been using Postgres since sometime in t
he version 7s\, and thinks that the best part of using Open Source softw
are is the culture of sharing knowledge. She’s a Senior Data Engineer at
  NS1 and co-founder and former co-lead of PDXPUG.\n\nTags: postgres\, po
