"Reliability and Software Tools Workshop"

We are pleased to sponsor a workshop on Reliability software and tools intended to assist engineers and others to improve the product in the development process. This event is in the form of a workshop with two sessions. The schedule is a session held both before and after a half-hour break.

5:00 – 6:30 PM – Session #1 – The focus is on describing ReliaSoft software and how each module of their software fits into a project of bringing a proposed product design to market. Dr. Umur Yenal is a Technologist with HBM Prenscia. He is involved in the delivery of training seminars and consulting projects in the field of Reliability and Quality Engineering, as well the development of ReliaSoft software products. He holds a MSc degree from the Technical University of Denmark and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Arizona. Previously, he worked as a post-doctorate research associate and as a test manager at the University of Arizona. His areas of interest include system reliability, life data analysis, accelerated life testing and reliability block diagrams.

In this 4-hour course, students will learn the basics of Pd and will have fun developing foundational Pd patching skills.

Pure Data (Pd) is a free, open-source, community supported data flow language and coding environment with an emphasis on sound, music, and multimedia. It was originally written by Miller Puckette (also the original author of Max/Max MSP) and runs on Linux, Mac OSX, Android, and Windows.

Pd has been used widely in the creation of art -- such as music, sound art, visual art, generative, new-media, and interactive art. Pd interfaces readily with MIDI equipment and many popular microcontrollers.

I know, I know. Accessibility seems like a thing that we should do... but it's sometimes uncomfortable to talk about and it feels like there aren't that many people who need it anyway... right?

Wrong. About 1 in 5 Americans reports that they have some kind of disability - from hearing impairment, vision impairment, mobility issues to mental disabilities and more. What does this mean for you and your company? It means that if you're not creating sites, services, and products with this group of people in mind, you're letting go of a multi-billion dollar market share. It also means that you're missing opportunities to be innovative leaders in your space. It also - finally - means that you're about to be breaking the law. Did you know that companies like Target and Netflix have been successfully (and expensively) sued for failure to create and maintain accessible sites? Well, they have. And we don't want that for you.

This course meets nightly for 5 days (10/9 - 10/13) from 6:00pm to 9:00pm & requires pre-work of approx 30 hours with online access to instructors.

If you’re new to coding, this is the place to start. At DevelopmentNow, we like learning how to use and program new technology, and the ability to write skills for Amazon's Alexa assistant is pretty exciting. We're hosting a free workshop and hackathon at our offices, during which we'll learn together to write a new Alexa skill, and demonstrate it, in an hour!

Because this will be late October, and because we also like the spooky atmosphere of that time of year, we're going to focus on thinking of skills with a Halloween bent. Given time and interest, we may even be able to put together a decision-tree narration of a haunted house. We're also eager to hear your own ideas and see what all the participants come up with together.

What's the planned schedule?

Our office doors will open at 10 am, and we'll officially kick off the session at 11. We'll share quickstart documents to everyone in attendance, and have a couple of our in-house developers with Alexa experience roaming the place to help figure things out. At 4 pm, we'll wrap up and take turns showing off what we've built.

What are my transport/parking options?

Parking around the east side of the Burnside Bridge is limited, but generally viable on weekends. We're also very close to the MLK and Burnside stop for the A Loop of the Portland Streetcar, or a block from the nearest bus stop on the 19 or 20. We have indoor bike parking as well.

What should I bring to the event?

Please bring a laptop and a willingness to learn! You don't need previous experience. We'll provide power, wifi, workspace, food, cooperative instruction, and our Echo for testing.

DorkbotPDX introduces free Pure Data workshop series

We are excited to announce a new workshop series devoted to Pure Data (Pd). http://puredata.info.

"Pd (aka Pure Data) is a real-time graphical programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing. It is the third major branch of the family of patcher programming languages known as Max (Max/FTS, ISPW Max, Max/MSP, jMax, etc.) originally developed by Miller Puckette and company at IRCAM."

Pure Data is free [FLOSS] software - meaning there is no charge for the download and it is open source, (free/libre). It runs wonderfully on Mac, Linux, Windows - so bring any laptop. Come with Pd-extended installed if possible - otherwise come a little early for installation assistance. The workshop is free as well!

We will will be doing several workshops starting from the ground up - and ranging topics as advanced as there is interest for.

Workshop One will be held May 17th. No prior Pd or programming knowledge is required, but expect to leave with functional knowledge of how to use Pd. The outline in progress can be found here: http://dorkbotpdx.org/wiki/pd_workshop_2009_outline.

But we want to hear from you! We'd love to get a rough idea of how many people are interested in attending.

Do you use Pd? Do you use similar commercial software like Max/MSP? Are you interested in learning Pd? Why? What are some of your ideas?

Pd is an incredibly open-ended platform so we're trying to get an idea of where the majority's (if there is a majority) interests lie.... Physical Interfaces for music? Live DSP? Generative composition? Video? Dance? Robotic cat toys? Feedforward most welcome!

The New Communicators is a three-day series of events exploring the ways we communicate with each other. It is an open forum for discussion, education and inspiration, free of charge. * * * In 2007 Alex Linsker walked up to strangers in New York City’s Union Square Park and said, “I’ll give you $5 if in five minutes or less we can’t figure out what to do about an upcoming situation you aren’t looking forward to.” It didn’t cost him too much to develop a set of questions. As a radio interviewer summarized, “Exciting Strengths that you find in one area of your life can then be extrapolated to all areas of life, and we can use them in really any project or goal we’ve created.”

In this workshop, we’ll apply strengths to what’s important to you at work or in life. We will walk through exercises, practice asking the questions and grow the way we think.

Getting Started with Microcontrollers Workshop

This workshop is the first in a series of workshops on how to use microcontrollers to, well, control things.

You’ve purchased an Arudino-compatible board or completed the Audino Cult Induction, so now it’s time to make your board actually do something. This monthly workshop covers simple but useful circuits to connect to the pins and how to control those circuits using the Arduino language.

The first workshop is on October 5 from 7 to 9pm at TechShop in Beaverton. The class will be held in the upstairs classroom (the “Hack Hut“).

Cost of each workshop is $10. You will also need to have:

  • an Arduino-compatible microcontroller board, such as the Dorkboard from the Arduino Cult Induction (with the pins installed so you can use it in a solderless breadboard), a Teensy, etc.

  • a solderless breadboard

You can purchase a complete kit that includes all these (Teensy, breadboard, USB cable, plus the first workshop), for $40 from the same site. What a deal!

You should also bring a notebook computer with the Arduino software installed, or come a half-hour early and we will help you install the software on your computer. Finally, bring wire strippers/cutters and some wire. We will have some multimeters, but feel free to bring your own.

Mitch Altman, from Noisebridge, will be giving one of his famous workshops at PDX Hackerspace. Mitch has taught thousands of people to solder and make cool things with microcontrollers at his workshops at hackerspaces, conferences and schools almost everywhere. He can teach you, too, if you like.

Deep Learning (DL) is a fast growing and exciting sub-field of machine learning and AI that has recently made extraordinary advancements in many applications such as image recognition, natural language processing, speech transcription, classification and forecasting.

This 2 day introductory course focuses on giving you a firm foundation of deep learning techniques using a combination of presentations and hands-on exercises.     NodeBots Day is world wide event where people learn how to control the physical world with JavaScript. The focus of NodeBots Day is on sharing and enjoying each other's company and JavaScript - lots of JavaScript.

    This year PDXNode and Women Who Code Portland are joining forces to host an awesome NodeBots Day in Portland. We want you to leave with the satisfaction of making something awesome!

    Continuing in the spirit of the international NodeBots Day event: this is not a hackathon. It's about spending a day in an amazing workshop with good people and tinkering, hacking and generally putting tools where hardware would rather you didn't. Women Who Code Portland will be providing some hardware at the event, but feel free to bring your own!

    I'm also an independent creator, building events and programs like Lady Boss (curated talks and speed mentoring for womxn and non-binary people), Radical Sabbatical (a creative retreat to take a break and make some progress) and Queer Future (a community for LGBTQIA+ folx to talk about work).

    I've also participated in many group coaching, peer-led or cohort-based learning experiences over the years, so I know a lot about collaboration, active listening, asking honest questions, and giving/receiving feedback.

    Quartz Composer (QC) is a free, powerful easy-to-use visual programming language for the Apple Macintosh. This workshop will take you from starting the program for the first time to building your own Interactive scene controlled with a gamepad. You’ll learn how to teach yourself QC, and meet others with whom you can collaborate and troubleshoot. No programming experience necessary.

    About this workshop

    Layout software is the key to making professional-looking posters and promotional graphics to promote your work (art/music/babysitting/etc). We’ll be using a great free program called Scribus to make basic layouts that look great.

    Secret Knowledge offers workshops aimed at empowering creative people. Attendees will come away with skills they can really use. Instruction will follow an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to learning. That means we’ll provide instruction on the basics of how to make posters and graphics layouts, attendees will participate in a work session designing some real posters that they expect to use (we hope) to promote something, and additional instruction will address the specific creative goals of attendees which arise during the work session.     Bring your Linux, Windows, or Macintosh laptop computer to the class. A limited number of loaner laptops can be made available, please ask in advance of the class if you will need one.

    Instructor: Jacob Mooney This workshop is for actors, dancers, musicians, and anyone who wants to express themselves more fully and freely. We will draw from physical theater, butoh, clown, modern dance, and myth. We will cultivate presence, awareness and potency in both our performances and in our lives. We will inspire ourselves to walk our edges, push our limits, and dive deep within ourselves. Through this work we hope to connect with other creative people who can laugh together, work together, and collaborate on future initiatives based upon the foundation we build in these sessions. Jacob is an actor, dancer, clown and stilt performer. He has studied with Lume Theater in Brazil, Smascherati clown theater in Italy, Yumiko Yoshioka of butoh dance company Ten Pen CHii. Jacob has also trained and performed with the International Theater Collective, Berlin- based Grotest Maru, and the Carpet Bag Brigade stilt theater company. Jacob also directed the Slippery Theater Stilt company in Portland, OR and is the current director of the New Cascadia Clown Army.

    Workshop on Designing Calm Technology at PNCA's Make+Think+Code Lab

    Calm Technology is a framework for designing ubiquitous devices that engage our attention in an appropriate manner. The aim of Calm Technology is to provide principles that follow the human lifestyle and environment in mind, allowing technology to amplify humanness instead of taking it away.

    The difference between an annoying technology and one that is helpful is how it engages our attention. This workshop will cover how to use principles of Calm Technology to design the next generation of connected devices. We’ll look at notification styles, compressing information into other senses, and designing for the least amount of cognitive overhead.

    Structure and activities

    Students will work in groups to solve a series of design challenges, including designing new products, ‘calming down’ a complex ones, communicating the principles of Calm Technology across an organization and team, and entering a product successfully into the marketplace.

    You’ll learn how to:

    Use principles of Calm Technology to design the next generation of connected devices.

    Design appropriate notification systems into both physical and software products

    Communicate the principles of Calm Technology to your across your organization and team

    Use methods of Calm Technology to design technology for generations, not seasons.

    Enter your product successfully into the marketplace.

    Who is the workshop for?

    This workshop is for anyone that actively builds or makes decisions about technology, especially user experience designers, product designers, managers, creative directors and developers. Attendees are encouraged to have some background in user experience design and look at http://calmtech.com/ or Designing Calm Technology before the workshop.

    Bringing a laptop is not required, as work will be done on paper and in groups.

    Workshop: Introduction to Programmable System-on-Chip Devices

    PDXElectroHax and Pattern Agents are are pleased to offer the first in a series of workshops on Programmable Hardware: Introduction to Programmable System-on-Chip Devices. Tom Moxon, CEO/Founder of PatternAgents will be teaching. It’s a chance to get an accessible introduction to this technology from an expert. Tickets are $20.     This workshop is a hands-on introduction to the Cypress PSoC device family and the (free) PSoC Creator Integrated Development Environment(IDE). The workshop will include a brief architecture and software/IDE overview, followed by hand's-on project labs.

    Kristina is a Clinical Social Worker with more than a decade of experience as a therapist and advocate. She has implemented several bystander intervention projects to create communities of inclusivity and safety. She facilitates difficult conversations with openness and authenticity.
    Tanya has a Computer Science Ph.D. with over twenty years of technical experience. A published researcher she has spent over a decade investigating people’s sense of community and belonging in tech. Her candidness inspires action.
    Together, Kristina and Tanya provide practical solutions for complex problems.
