DevGroup NW: Small Groups, Tightly Joined
PCC Cascade Campus

Homophily describes the tendency of individuals to bond with people similar to themselves. It’s an obvious insight. But it also means everything to the analysis of any given online community. A web community’s success can be predicted almost entirely by asking: “Do the people drawn to this website share cultural traits with one another?”

This is why Microsoft can’t launch a successful social network. While your average college radio station, or sports fan club, or local music scene are natural gathering places.

With web communities, technology isn’t important - it’s a culture thing.

Exploring Photoshop CS4 with Mark Fitzgerald
Oregonian

Join us for an evening withMark Fitzgerald, Adobe Certified Photoshop Expert and author of “Photoshop CS4 After the Shoot”, as we Delve into the recently released PhotoshopCS4. Our exploration will begin with Photoshop’s redesigned user interface. Mark will also demonstrate some of the new and improved features, including:

• The new Adobe Kuler panel that allows you to explore, create, and share color themes with an online community. • Two new panels - the Adjustments panel for quickly creating adjustment layers, and the new Masks panel that allows you to painlessly create and manage layer masks in ways never possible on previous versions of Photoshop. • The cool new Content Aware Scaling feature lets you to protect parts of an image as you scale its size. • The Auto Blending feature that allows you to selectively choose tones, colors, and focal point from a range of images as they’re merged into a single image. • New soft-proofing feature for the color-blind individuals using Color Universal Design Organization profiles. • Updated print dialog that provides superior color management and the ability to preview out-ofgamut areas of the image in the print dialog.

Mark will also give us a tour of the new and faster Adobe Bridge CS4, and show us a few secrets to speeding up the workflow using some of the nifty tools buried in the menus. We’ll also be looking at Adobe Camera Raw 5 and some of its new tools, including the localized corrections and post-crop vignetting. If you’re already using Photoshop CS4, this presentation will point out many of the new features that you may not have seen yet. If you haven’t seen CS4, this will be your chance to get a close look at what all of the excitement is about.

Mark Fitzgerald is a Photoshop consultant and author living in Portland. He helps professional photographers gain control of their workflows through workshops and private training.

Mark is the author of : “Photoshop CS3 Restoration and RetouchingBible”, “Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop Workflow Bible”, “Adobe Photoshop CS4 After the Shoot”. To learn more about Mark, visit his website at www.ddroom.com.

Webvisionary Awards
Someday Lounge

Each year, in conjunction with the conference, WebVisions honors the most visionary, daring, and curious talent on the web by awarding them with a miniature robot. We wanted to make this award show different in every way, other than the winners receiving an award part.

This year, we have a comedian for a host, a killer DJ to supply the beat, and presentation karaoke to kick it off.

An 'A-list' group of robot lovin' luminaries will judge the awards, including typography icon Roger Black, Mark Frauenfelder of MAKE Magazine and BoingBoing.net, Merlin Mann of 43folders.com, Molly Holzschlag of Molly.com, Renny Gleeson of Weiden+Kennedy, Armin Vit of UnderConsideration, Scott Porad of LOLCATS and many others.

Oh, and did we mention that WebVisions attendees get a special 2-for-1 deal? What are you waiting for? The deadline is April 15th.

The Webvisionary Awards are sponsored by WebTrends, 52 Ltd and Hot Pepper Studios.

Here's how it works:

Each turn will be exactly 15 minutes. That means there's room for about 8 presentations. Signup will be AT THE EVENT. The order will be determined using an algorithm which places you in the order you signed up. The format is UP TO YOU! (so is the content ;-) Feel free to bring a slideshow or demo to accompany you, since it's always better to show AND tell. A projector will be available. In return you will get:

The validation of your peers An engaged and informed audience that will give you honest feedback because, well, why wouldn't we? Ideas that you haven't thought of yet. So join us in the informal comfort of our living room venue, bring a snack or a beverage if you like, and oh yeah: don't forget to bring your great ideas to share!

PDX Web: Lightning Talks!
Abstract Machines Design & Development

We're going to try something a little different for the holidays, at a different time and different location, so make a note!

Rather than a specific topic with one speaker, we're going to do some lightning talks. In a nutshell, ANYONE can stand up and do a short 5 minute presentation about any topic they wish (preferably relevant to our group, but if you really want to talk about your cats...). Every speaker will be given be 5 minutes (by clock) with a 1 minute warning before the end. Slides are allowed, but not required. Props are welcome!

Here's some ideas: * Projects you're working on * A new toolkit you're excited about * A new methodology you've developed * Books/Websites you highly recommend * A public rant/praise about our group * Hassles of writing books (hint, Dave... hint...) * Anything, really

if you've never done a lightning talk, here's a good thing to read: http://selenadelesie.com/2010/06/30/try-a-lightning-talk/

Please post/email your topic if you plan to present. We may be able to fit in 12-15 in a reasonable time.

We're meeting across the river at "Abstract Machines", off Ladd's Rose Gardens Circle and Squares. This won't be hard to get into - and a little more of a party atmosphere than our normal structure. Food and drinks are welcome/encouraged.

The Real Life Social Network
Webtrends

The focus of this talk isn't on Facebook, or Twitter, or Buzz - but rather how current research understands social interactions work in the real work. Specific technologies will only be mentioned as to how they all get it wrong - and more importantly - how you don't have to.

You won't want to miss this. It isn't another "Social network buzzword Twitter buzz buzzzzzz lol" talk - but real interesting research in human behavior with real implications on future UX design.

I'll be going over mostly the research presentation by Paul Adams, who works as the UX research lead for Google's social initiatives. EDIT: Apparently today he accepted a job at Facebook.

Lightning Talk & Discussion Free for All
Webtrends

A completely chaotic, non-directed, organic discussion of our favorite web and design tools, ideas, methodologies, or anything relevant to the group. We had one of these in December (feel free to bring snacks, food, etc) and it went over very well. So well, in fact, many people have requested another sooner rather than later. So here's the deal:

We can set up a laptop on the projector and anyone who is interested can spend 5 minutes discussion and showing off their favorite tools, frameworks, projects - or just stand up and talk. Anyone interested should prepare a bit in advance, keep it short (we're serious about the 5 minute cutoff!), and let's cram as much (web and design related) knowledge as we can in 90 minute!

Bagdad Theater and Pub

"Think Smaller: How smaller, lifestyle startups are more likely succeed"

Save the date! This month's speaker is Jason Glaspey. Jason is the Product Manager at UrbanAirship, co-founder of PIE (Portland Incubator Experiment at Weiden+Kennedy) and author of "From Idea to Web Start-up in 21 Days".

Jason has done a number of successful startups and has a number of failures. He's built lifestyle startups from scratch that pay his bills, ran a blog that let him drive a different new car every week, had projects fall flat on their face, and worked in venture-funded companies like UrbanAirship.

Here are some of the things he'll be talking about:

  • Defining what Success means
  • Being Realistic about exits
  • Discussing the failures
  • Hiring out developers
  • Finding partners
  • Shopping out menial tasks
  • Retirement means I work on what I want, when I want, with whom I want

The event is being sponsored by Cloudability. Cloudability lets you manage all your cloud billing in one place. Cloudability will be offering early access to its beta launch next month to all attendees (as well as free beer and wine.)

Fluid Design - PDXWeb & Design
Webtrends

Folks have been talking a lot lately about fluid design... allowing a website to gracefully degrade to very small pixels. Where "min-width" used to be the default, you're now seeing a lot of design starting with "max-width" (friendly for mobile and netbooks). Many tips and tricks around this one, for example: The 100% image trick (for scalable images) Utilizing media queries The 62.5% trick (sets ems to 10px, and use only % and ems) Proper text sizing for both small and large devices using % column widths rather than pixels and much more.

Kory has graciously agreed to present this long overdue talk. Anyone who has bits of experience is certainly encouraged to contribute. You don't want to miss this - it's the future of web design!

PDXW&D: Accessibility on the Web
Webtrends

Accessibility on the web is an important, but often overlooked topic in web design and development. Making your website accessible and usable by people who are sight, hearing, or in other ways physically impaired can be a huge help to a large class of internet users. You may have done a little accessibility feature for ADA compliance, but beyond that, it's just the right thing to do, and isn't as difficult as you might think if you focus on accessibility from the start. We'll cover all sorts of accessibility, including designing for screen readers.

You won't want to miss this huge and interesting topic, and we're lucky to have two expert speakers on the topic: Winslow Parker and Lorelle VanFossen.

Winslow Parker is the Lead Adaptive Technology Specialist at the Oregon Commission for the Blind. Worked as adaptive technology trainer for 17 years. He's also worked in medical social work, pastoring and mental health fields. Winslow has been legally blind since age 20, and totally blind since age 50 (now 65). Married son and daughter; 2.1 grandchildren. He's been a Portland resident for 35 years, Oregon 37 years; also lived in Michigan, NYC and SanDiego. Bachelor’s degree in Theology; AA degree Mt Hood Community college in Computer Applications. He claims to spend way too much time using a computer and web (whatever!), and very much appreciates interest in making web pages accessible.

PLUG Advanced Topics: Roundtable: Web serving in the post-LAMP era
Free Geek

This month's meeting will be a roundtable discussion about modern web serving.

The CGI.pl/ODBC era gave way to LAMP and we're now onto the next generation:

  • node.js and NoSQL make LAMP overkill for many situations

  • AJAX/JavaScript are moving much application logic to the browser

  • Apache is giving way to lighttpd, node.js, nginx and others

  • We've gone from 9" Mac support to 1024 X 768 and now to 4" phones

  • URL Shorteners. Who would have thought?

  • Users now routinely block ads, scripting and Flash

  • Apple has declared war on Flash!

  • HTML 5 and CSS 3 are starting to appear in the wild

  • Security is finally coming first, not last

How have these factors changed the way you serve web content?

Are the fundamental problems being solved and making your job easier?

Please share your experiences at this roundtable and bring your questions.

When: Tuesday, September 20th, 7PM

                         PRESENTATION

                  Don't Fear the Autotools!

                              by

                         Scott Garman

Autoconf. Automake. Libtool. This trio of build configuration
utilities (known as the Autotools) are used in a large majority
of compiled software applications for Linux, but they remain a
 mystery to many of us.

In this gentle introduction to the Autotools, Scott Garman will
help lift the veil of uncertainty most people have about them.
You'll also learn about the Gnu Coding Standards and the Filesystem
Hierarchy Standard, two specifications which explain a lot of the
"why" behind the Autotools (yes, there is a method to this madness!).
Finally, Scott will offer some practical tips for understanding
and fixing errors you may see when building an Autotools-based
package. It's sure to be a fun romp for the whole family.

                        Keith Lofstrom

 Since 2005, Randall Munroe's xkcd.com, "A webcomic of romance,
sarcasm, math, and language" has covered many topics dear to FOSS
advocates and has been discussed on the PLUG list many times.
The #1000 comic is expected to appear Friday January 6 just after
midnight eastern time, making Thursday January 5 "xkcd1k eve".

Join us for a celebration of XKCD1K eve at the PLUG general
meeting. We can display and discuss/explain some of the
Free/Libre/Open source cartoons, the various weblogs and forums
that have sprung up around them, draw our own cartoons (Keith
will bring art paper and pens), perhaps discuss the technology
 of web comics.

Homework: bring your own list of favorite xkcd cartoons, and
we will display them at the meeting. Bring your artistic and
"right brained" friends. Bring your black porkpie hat. If
you are Richard Stallman, bring your katana sword.

Afterwards, at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub at 1945 nw Quimby, we

Intro to Salt / Salt Stack (saltstack.org)
                          by Daniel Hedlund

Salt is a distributed configuration management and remote execution platform built on top of ZeroMQ and Python. Simple, fast, powerful and extensible.

Daniel will give a presentation on the architecture of Salt and how it leverages ZeroMQ to provide a simple but highly scalable and parallel method of software deployment.

"Salt is a distributed remote execution system used to execute commands and query data. It was developed in order to bring the best solutions found in the world of remote execution together and make them better, faster and more malleable. Salt accomplishes this via its ability to handle larger loads of information, and not just dozens, but hundreds or even thousands of individual servers, handle them quickly and through a simple and manageable interface."

Instructional Technology Strategies Conference
through Sheraton Portland Airport

OETC would like to invite you to attend our annual Instructional Technology Strategies Conference.

The Instructional Technology Strategies Conference is an opportunity for educators to think, explore, and develop strategies to enhance student achievement through the effective use of technology.

The subject is technology in the classroom, but the focus is on you. ITSC is specifically designed to be an active learning conference. Participants come away from ITSC not with a high level overview, but specific strategies and increased opportunities for education-related connections. Whether you are a teacher looking to improve K-20 classroom instruction or an administrator looking to support technology in your school or district, you will come away from ITSC with solutions that can be implemented right away.

Balancing tradition with 21st century innovation. We held on to the values that past attendees covet (active learning time in three-hour workshops, 90-minute sessions, two thought provoking keynotes, two vendor expert sessions, four quality meals and exhibit halls) and at the same time have added innovative opportunities (Unconference, Soiree of Slides, Schedule App that publishes in all platforms at once) to play and/or dive deep into the education questions that consume us.

If you want to learn, question, create, and engage in meaningful, authentic professional development then our conference is the right opportunity for you!

Please join us by registering at goo.gl/eiklr.

In an effort to get to know and support developers in the thriving tech communities all over the country, Singly is heading out on the road to throw API happy hours.

This is not about marketing, and it's not about sales. APIs & IPAs is focused on community. We want to support your local tech community, and we want to get to know developers everywhere.

In each city, we're partnering with local companies that strive to build developer communities, as well as non-local developer-centric companies.

All you have to do is show up ready to talk shop – and we'll foot the bill for drinks.

PDX Web & Design: Killing The Angle Bracket
Webtrends

Sooner or later we all have to work with HTML, despite its verbosity. Those of us who claim to love HTML may just be victims of Stockholm Syndrome, both praising yet secretly loathing it.

Basho designer John Newman is making the trek from the swamps of Florida to show us the way. In the modern world of markup preprocessors, these alternative syntaxes allow you to write simpler, cleaner, more concise code in a shorter amount of time. Certain techniques can even allow your team members who may be less-tech-savvy to contribute content directly without forcing you to wire up a WYSIWYG style CMS.

This talk explores great alternatives to plain HTML and CSS, and covers how Basho put these tools together to facilitate a painless, team-oriented approach to building sites and web apps.

Vitamin T will be feeding us pizza and recruiting for several local positions; Webtrends will give us space; and Basho is providing John.

PDX Web & Design: Alternatives to Conveying Interactive Design Concepts
Webtrends

Many of the processes and deliverables widely used in web design today have been inherited from print, or born in the early days of web design. Deliverables like static wireframes or rounds of Photoshop comps provide a muted glimpse of the experiences they are trying to represent, which often result in mismanaged expectations and wasted resources. Erin Kurtz, Substance's Experience Director, will present some of the ways we are redefining our methods and deliverables by capitalizing on the broadening skill sets of our UX, Design and Development teams to work smarter and more efficiently in our User Experience and Visual Design phases.

I'm pretty excited for this talk, as the design web field could use a bit of disruption. Thanks to Erin and Substance for presenting this talk, thanks to Webtrends for the space, and thanks to Vitamin T for catering dinner!

Portland JavaScript Admirers' Lightning Talks
Janrain Headquarters

The monthly meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We host presentations and discussions on everything JavaScript-related - including JavaScript frameworks, node.js, CoffeeScript, and whatever else comes up.

This is the meeting where we will have LIGHTNING TALKS!

I encourage everyone to give a talk—especially anyone who has not given a talk at a user group meeting before. This is a great opportunity to practice speaking with a bite-size time slot. I (Jesse) have found that giving presentations is a good way to get name/face recognition, which has opened a lot of doors for me. And this will be a context where there will be other people speaking who have also not given a talk before.

Talks will be 5 minute presentations, with or without slides or other visual aids of your choosing. Choose any topic that interests you—so long as it is safe-for-work.

If you would like to give a talk, send an email to Jesse Hallett ([email protected]) to be added to the list. If you are going to use slides please send a copy to the same address so that we can have everybody's presentations ready to go on one computer. Sign up first and send the slides later if you need time to make the slides. Slots will be first-come, first-served. We have time for 12–14 presentations.

I wanted to include some tips for anyone who has not given a lightning talk before:

  • Practice! Do your talk out loud a few times in front a friend, mirror, an empty room, or whatever. Time yourself while practicing. You will feel silly doing this. But it is the only way to make sure that you are prepared to get the most use out of your five minutes. That is a very short time slot. Practicing will help you to focus on important points, and will help you to avoid points that you might otherwise stumble over.

  • Speak slowly, and take pauses while you are speaking. When I am in front of a room full of people, I have a tendency to worry that I am wasting a lot of people's time, which makes me want to rush and to talk too fast. I think that this is a common reaction. You can give a better talk by resisting the temptation to hurry. Pausing between points, or when you need a moment to collect your thoughts, will give your audience opportunity to digest your points. Remember that a pause that feels long and awkward to you probably does not feel that way to your audience.

  • If you use slides, my suggestion is to use at most 10 slides. That is one slide for every 30 seconds of speaking time. Your slide count is one way to estimate whether you are trying to fit in too much material for the given time.

  • It is preferable to cover one point well than to go over five points hastily. Think about what the core point of your talk is, and how much you can take out while still conveying that point.

  • Have some water handy—public speaking tends to lead to cottonmouth.

Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Or visit our web site for more information at http://pdxjs.com/.

Elemental Technologies

THIS IS NOT OUR USUAL LOCATION! This month only, the meeting will be at Elemental Technologies.

We have three presentations on the agenda this month:

JavaScript, Hardware and the Internet of Things, presented by Gerald Aden

Internet of Things has become a huge opportunity for software, hardware and designers alike to create solutions for both consumers and businesses. We'll explore how to get started using JavaScript/Node.js, a Raspberry PI and the Cloud to easily get started developing for this exciting space.

RactiveJS, presented by Marty Nelson

Ractive.js is a template-driven UI library. Unlike other tools that generate inert HTML, it transforms your templates into blueprints for apps that are interactive by default. Ractive was originally created at theguardian.com by Rich Harris to produce news applications. These apps are heavily interactive, combine HTML and SVG, and are developed under extreme deadline pressure. It has to work reliably across browsers, and perform well even on mobile devices.

Ractive is a library, not a framework. Where some tools force you to learn a new vocabulary and structure your app in a particular way, Ractive works for you, not the other way around – and it plays well with other libraries. In this talk, we'll go over the main features of Ractive.js, and also show possible integrations that highlight the varied approaches to working with Ractive.

Marty Nelson is a contributor to the Ractive open-source project. A 15 year veteran (survivor?) of enterprise software development he has been a developer, manager and lead architect. The last few years he has been focused on javascript, both in node and the browser, and web and mobile app development with HTML5.

Mystery bonus presentation

We may or may not be able to get to the final presentation. So for now it will remain a mysterious secret!

Portland JavaScript Admirers' Monthly Meeting
Janrain Headquarters

The monthly meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We host presentations and discussions on everything JavaScript-related - including JavaScript frameworks, node.js, CoffeeScript, and whatever else comes up.

This month Jesse Hallett will talk about React and the Virtual DOM. React is a library for building HTML views in a less stateful, more functional way than is done with many other frameworks. Under the hood it uses a virtual DOM representation, which makes page updates really fast.

Thanks go to PubNub for sponsoring pizza, and to Janrain for providing meeting space.

Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Or visit our web site for more information at http://pdxjs.com/.

RefreshPDX: Young At Art – The Generative Generation
Idealist

Designers and artists are discovering the power of combining their knowledge of patterns, space, and colors with code and frameworks. Not to make prettier websites, but to create art. Interactive and infinitely generative code art.

But fear not: though getting into programming can be incredibly intimidating, code art, is one path to coding that can be fun, easy, and instantly rewarding. John Brown will show you some frameworks and sites that will get you started making art quickly and easily.

Occasionally, a new discovery will come along that changes the way artists create. Pigments in antiquity or screen printing in the recent past have given artists a path to explore. Now computers, and the frameworks created for them, are hitting the sweet spot of ease of use and power. Code art is still in its infancy, and creative coding is the wild west. It’s all about exploring, layering, and trying new things. Any creative endeavor of the last 5000 years has a digital equivalent, and there are myriad digital art paths that have no physical analogue.

John Brown will show you how to get involved in creative coding. There is a great community locally he’ll introduce you to. He’ll also talk a bit on the history of creative coding, show you some of his work, and talk about the future of code art and how it fits into the greater art world.

When you leave, you’ll want to rush home and pick up a digital paintbrush and start making code art.

RefreshPDX: The Power of Pattern Libraries
Idealist.org

Every web project faces a similar set of challenges: how do you keep visual assets and the code that serves them maintainable? CSS, in particular, is notoriously difficult to manage over time. Almost as soon as a project begins, we lose track of everything we’ve made available. Even worse, we become fearful of making changes, because it’s hard to know what the consequences will be.

Instead, we tend to add. We add more code, and we add more components. Before long, our CSS is very difficult to update, and our sites become inconsistent, with a diverse mix of typography and components.

Pattern Libraries can help us with these problems. We’ll talk about exactly what a Pattern Library is, how it is (or isn’t) like a Styleguide, some advantages it can provide, and finally a little about how to go about making one.

Refresh Portland—Jane Austen on Python: Tips from an English Major on Writing Better Code
FINE

With two English degrees, Lacey Williams Henschel has identified some concrete ways having a Lit background makes for a better developer. This talk discusses how developers can take lessons from literature to write more readable code, make better tests, and create more usable websites.

We’ll compare Two Scoops of Django to Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style, that familiar Freshman Comp text, exploring how they are more alike than they are different. We’ll discuss the importance of readability, creating a “story arc” in your tests through good user stories, how variables names have characterization, and the importance of whitespace and good formatting to everyone. We’ll also compare PEP8, the Python style guide, to the MLA Handbook; there’s a reason both disciplines have a style guide!

Hacking Web Stuff with F#
Lucky Labrador Tap Room

Ok, F#ers, got a special guest coming into town that would like to do some web stuff hacking, and thus...

Hacking Web Stuff with F#

In this hands on session, we'll have a look at two F# libraries for doing web stuff, both on the server-side and on the client-side. It will be hands-on, so make sure to bring a laptop with F#. For playing with Fable, you'll also need to have node installed! Suave for the server-side

Suave is a lightweight web-server for F# that lets you compose web applications or REST services from small, correct, asynchronous web parts. It lets you compose asynchronous web services with just a couple of lines of code. For more information check out www.suave.io or demos like the F# snippes web site.

Fable is an F# to JavaScript compiler that lets you use functional-first programming style on the web. It produces modern and clean JavaScript with minimal core library and source maps. It integrates well with modern JavaScript dev tools like node, WebPack and organizes code using ES6 modules.

Tomas is a computer scientist, book author and open-source developer. He wrote a popular book called "Real-World Functional Programming" and is a lead developer of several F# open-source libraries, but he also contributed to the design of the F# language as an intern and consultant at Microsoft Research. He is a partner at fsharpWorks (http://fsharpworks.com) where he provides trainings and consulting services. Tomas recently submitted his PhD thesis at the University of Cambridge focused on types for understanding context usage in programming languages, but his most recent work also includes two essays that attempt to understand programming through the perspective of philosophy of science.

Attendees will get a showcase of how these new digital techniques can be applied to the web by journeying back to the past—nearly 100 years—to one of the most notable periods in the history of design: Bauhaus modernism. During this period, design was highly influential yet gleefully experimental, with strict geometry, overlapping elements, and rotated text. Attendees will see works by artist Piet Mondrian, typographer Jan Tschichold, dadaist Kurt Schwitters, and metal-worker Marianne Brandt recreated or redesigned on screen, and optimized for the new medium of mobile devices.

Hack the Dot!
Puppet

Hack the Dot is a hackathon where code school students, working developers, marketing and design professionals, and anyone else interested in the Web come together to build ideas. Use your skills in web development, storytelling, and creative ideation to build a humorous (maybe even functional!) product, while meeting people in your tech/startup community. This quarter we're teaming up with pdxFLIT and Puppet Labs. Join us!

How does it work?

At a domain-driven hackathon, all of the teams are given a single premium domain name at the beginning of the event. All teams then have two hours to come up with a product inspired by that domain, fueled by food and beverage. Whichever team builds and pitches the most creative and funny idea for the domain wins!

Prizes include the premium domain name itself, plus swag from our sponsors!

Timeline

6:00 - Meet with teams, get food and drink

6:15 - MC introductions, reveal the night's domain name!

6:30 - Start hacking!

8:30 - Stop hacking, team presentations

9:15 - End presentations, announce winner

Do I need to bring a team?

Nope! Teams are formed randomly at the beginning.

Do you have a Code of Conduct for this event?

We sure do! Make sure you read and agree before signing up!

PDXNode – Hack Night! 💻
CTRL-H

Welcome to the PDXNode Hack Night!

What is a PDXNode Hack Night?

PDXNode Hack Nights are your opportunity to enjoy a low-pressure JavaScript-centric environment where you shouldn't feel like you're supposed to do anything. First and foremost–just come and enjoy yourself. The night is yours: hang, hack, learn, or do whatever you’re interested in doing. 🙌

Depending on the size and interests of our attending group, we have various paths the night could go, and may or may not attempt some of the following:

Map Ctrl-H into Hackerspace Regions

The hackerspace will be mapped into 'regions', and you can feel free to gravitate towards whichever one suits your interest!

• A place for beginners who want to get going with node for the first time. • A place for people who want to work on their own projects (eg. projects you want to do outside of work, but need to find the time). • A place for people to just hang out and connect. • A place for people to work on projects in groups!

'Unconference'-style Team Hacks

For team-hackers, we'll have a board up and sticky-notes available available at the beginning of the night. Anyone can feel free to write the name and/or description of something they'd like to hack on with other people–and others who're interested can feel free to go to that region and join in!

End of Night Show and Tell

There will be a list available to write your name, or team's name down on to give a quick show and tell of your projects at the end of the night. We're pumped to see what you've been working on!

Some general stuff to remember:

Help is available!

There will be seasoned Nodesters ready and available to help anyone with questions or advice in any of the hack-zones: beginners, solo, and group projects. Feel free to reach out and ask at any time throughout the evening.

Do what you want to do

Above all, we hope for this to be an easy-going event for people to do what they want to do with the time we have. Make the time awesome, it's yours. 😎

Code of Conduct

PDXNode continues to abide by its Code of Conduct, and we ask everyone to commit to keeping to it in order for all of us to have a safe, fun, and amazing time.

Wahoo! See you then! 🎉🎉 💻 🎉🎉
