TechAmerica Talent Management Workshop: Tools for the Twenty First Century Workforce
Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC)

About the Workshop: The twenty first century is a knowledge worker driven era. New methods of managing acquiring, nurturing and retaining talent will be essential for a competitive organization. In this half-day workshop, a series of presenters will bring tools every HR leader should have in their toolkit and executive should hear.

Session 1 (8:00 – 9:00 a.m.): From Start-Up to High-Growth: Shaping a Culture for Success The shift from a start-up culture has caused many promising companies to stumble. EthicsPoint president and CEO David Childers will present the step-by-step process his company took to consciously reconstruct its corporate culture. This two-year-long project has helped EthicsPoint exceed growth and revenue expectations and position itself for international expansion.

Session 2 (9:00 – 10:00 a.m.) Turning the Job They Have Into the Job They Want For many companies the downturn has stalled growth, which in turn has left employees feeling “stuck” in their jobs. This dissatisfaction can be especially difficult in technology companies where employees are attracted to working fast paced growth and changing environments. Via Skype, Dr. Jane Dutton from University of Michigan will share the Job Crafting Exercise, a low cost, powerful tool that the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship has developed.

Session 3 (10:15 – 11:15 a.m.) Performance Appraisals – The Next Act Few issues in management stir up more controversy than performance appraisal.

There are many reputable sources - researchers, management commentators, psychometricians - who have expressed doubts about the validity and reliability of the performance appraisal process. Some have even suggested that the process is so inherently flawed that it may be impossible to perfect it. At the other extreme, there are many strong advocates of performance appraisal. Some view it as potentially the most crucial aspect of organizational life (Lawrie, 1990). Dr. Steve Hunt will talk about how the performance management process is shifting from an administrative process used to justify pay decisions to a forward focused tool for enabling business execution.

Planning a social media strategy
Key Bank

Free Business Training, Portland

“Transforming Customers into Raving Fans Through Social Media”

Many successful companies are using social media to attract and convert leads, grow revenue, reduce marketing costs and even develop new products.

Is YOUR business being left behind?

Why Do Some Businesses Have Trouble With Social?

85% of companies have used Social Media and failed to see business results, while 10% use it and see their revenue soar. There are 3 primary reasons why businesses fail with their Social Media efforts:

  1. The business has a siloed organizational structure. Social media can often blur the lines between customer service, sales, marketing and even R&D. Be open to change.

  2. The business leaders think social media is nothing more than another marketing tactic. But this approach leads to pushy selling and inconsistent messaging and can turn off more business in the long-term. These new tools require a different mindset than traditional marketing.

  3. The business leader mistakenly assumes that because many of the social channels are free that they are easy to use and so jump in without a strategy. After this doesn’t work, they conclude that social simply doesn’t work. The problem, however, was with the message, not the medium.

Put YOUR Business in the Winning 10%

Join Cinta Media Group for a free training to help your business thrive in the modern marketplace. You will walk away with clear actionable steps you can take. There will be time for Q&A at the end.

AgilePDX event: "The Mikado Method, or how to behead the legacy beast" workshop
World Trade Center

THANK YOU to our sponsors: ProKarma and Agile Open Northwest!!

For any code base there comes a time when you want (or need) to change it. If your changes are extensive, it’s easy to get lost in a jungle of dependencies or on a sea of broken code. Ultimately, you might just give up and shove it away under the legacy label. Instead of doing that, use "The Mikado Method," a systematic approach to reclaim your code. The method helps you visualize, prepare, and perform business-value focused changes, while delivering, and without having a broken code-base in the process. It enhances team communication, collaboration and learning, and helps individuals stay on track.

http://mikadomethod.wordpress.com/book/

For: Lead developers, architects, programming coaches, or anyone who wants to get some serious hands-on practice on how to work their way out of messy code while keeping the delivery frequency and business value focus.

Join Ola Ellnestam, founder of Agical.se and author of The Mikado Method, as he leads the group through exploring techniques for restructuring difficult-t0-work-with code. Ola likes to combine people, technology and business which is best done with simple means and flexible processes. More than that he likes to share his knowledge and experiences because that’s how new insights are created according to him. http://ellnestam.wordpress.com/

http://www.hanoulle.be/2012/02/who-is-ola-ellnestam/

http://www.agical.com/

Registration fee: $85 - The participation of our sponsors, (including Agile Open Northwest, ProKarma, and...you?) helps us to keep the fee as low as possible.

About the speakers...

Llewellyn Falco learned to jump horses in the 7th grade while living in France. Back in states, while studying drafting in high school, he started fire eating, sleight of hand magic, and once rode a unicycle 6 miles. After learning to juggle torches, he joined a acrobatics group in college where he specialized on the trampoline and walking a slack rope. He can calculate the cube root of any perfect cube under 1,000,000 in his head, as well as pick a standard lock. He can rollerblade down a flight of stairs, backwards. Later, he has learned to play the doumbek (a type of drum), to accompaniment a belly dancing girlfriend. Llewellyn studied Tai Chi for 2 years, can throw a knife at 20 feet, and a playing card at 50. He has taught swing dancing, and loves to salsa. He is also an accomplished speed chess player. In the last year, he has been scuba diving over 20 times, become a guitar hero, and broke his personal record of paddle balling over 200 times. Llewellyn attributes his success to the large amount of caffeine he has consumed, and enjoys computer programming in his spare time.

About Managing Professional Services Firms
Online Webinar

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN - The three types of Professional Services firm and the management at each - The emphasis that clients and employees put on values and culture - Using your influence, passion, and vision to lead the organization We will also have a live thirty-minute Q&A period after the presentation.

This webinar series is a world-first: a dedicated professional services manager course with a dedicated focus on management—this exclusivity of focus is designed to strip away the redundant training that comes with other options, such as the MBA: - Eight 90 minute webinars covering the fundamentals of professional services management - Topics include areas such as estimates, engagement scheduling and KPIs - Available to watch online on all internet web browsers

About Kayne McGladrey I have always had the good fortune of not being the smartest person in the room. Much of my understanding of professional services management has come from mentoring by the vice presidents and senior partners I had worked with over the years. I am fortunate to be currently working with one of the three most influential mentors in my career. However, many of the hundreds of consultants and former professional services managers I have spoken with have identified a lack of available training to manage a professional services organization. I believe that the only way to demonstrate mastery of a skill is to teach someone else. I regularly write about my experience managing a worldwide professional services organization.

OWASP Training Day 2016
Portland State University (PSU) - Smith Memorial Center

This year the Portland OWASP chapter is hosting a training day. This will be an excellent opportunity for students to receive quality information security and application security training for next to nothing. (Similar training may cost more than 10 times as much in a conference setting.) It will also be a great chance to network with the local infosec community.

For more information on the schedule and how to register, see the main event page.

Courses are held in two tracks: two in the morning session, and two in the afternoon session. Each student can register for one morning course, or one afternoon course, or one of each!

Morning Session

Cyber Hygiene - Critical Security Controls

With so many types of network attacks and so many tools/solutions to combat these attacks, which should I implement first? Which should I buy? Can I build it myself? The CIS Critical Security Controls are a prioritized approach to ensuring information security. As a general risk assessment, the Critical Security Controls address the past, current and expected attacks occurring across the Internet. In this course we will outline the controls, discuss implementation and testing, and provide examples.

Introduction to Injection Vulnerabilities

Instructor: Timothy D. Morgan Ever concatenated strings in your code? Did those strings include any kind of structured syntax? Then your code might be vulnerable to injection. Injection flaws are broad, common category of vulnerability in modern software. While many developers are aware of high-profile technical issues, such as SQL injection, any number of injection vulnerabilities are possible in other languages, protocols, and syntaxes. Upon studying these flaws in many contexts, an underlying "theory of injection" emerges. This simple concept can be applied to many situations (including new technologies and those yet to be invented) to help developers avoid the most common types of implementation vulnerabilities. The reason why "injection" is #1 on the OWASP Top 10 will become very clear by the end of this class. This course will provide students a detailed introduction to injection vulnerabilities and then get students busy with hands-on exercises where a variety of different injection flaws can be explored and understood in real-world contexts.

Afternoon Session

Applied Physical Attacks on Embedded Systems, Introductory Version

This workshop introduces several different relatively accessible interfaces on embedded systems. Attendees will get hands-on experience with UART, SPI, and JTAG interfaces on a MIPS-based wifi router. After a brief architectural overview of each interface, hands-on labs will guide through the process understanding, observing, interacting with, and exploiting the interface to potentially access a root shell on the target.

Communications Security in Modern Software

Securing communications over untrusted networks is a critical component to any modern application's security. However, far too often developers and operations personnel become tripped up by the many pitfalls of implementation in this area, which often leads to complete failures to secure data on the wire. In this course we discuss how attackers can gain access to other users' communication through a variety of techniques and cover the strategies for preventing this. The course covers specific topics ranging from the SSL/TLS certificate authority system, to secure web session management and mobile communications security. A hands-on exercise is included in the course which helps students empirically test SSL/TLS certificate validation in a realistic scenario.

About OWASP

How Much Data Do We Need
Synaptiq office

If there is anything that is universally true in machine learning, it is that more data is always better. That’s why data scientists always respond to the “How much data do you need?” question with “How much data can you get?”

But sometimes you don’t have much data, because: a) It’s genuinely hard to get; or b) You haven’t been gathering it for very long and it takes time. This is a much more common circumstance than you might think. And you are not alone if you're experiencing this issue. Luckily, and not surprisingly, the machine learning community has come up with numerous approaches for dealing with it. Come sit in on an exclusive conversation with Dr. Tim Oates, professor and practitioner, who will share what appeals to intuition as to why the methods work and provide concrete examples of their application to simple problems.

We will discuss transfer learning, open source datasets and synthetic data, few shot learning, active learning, and semi-supervised learning. By the end of the evening, you should understand what all of these methods are, when they are applicable, and what kinds of results you can expect from using them.

Dr. Tim Oates is Chief Data Scientist at Synaptiq and an Oros Family Professor of Computer Science and Technology in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2001 with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and spent a year as a postdoc in the MIT AI Lab. He is an author or co-author of more than 150 peer reviewed papers in AI, ML, and data mining. Dr. Oates served as Chief Scientist for a big data startup in the contact management space, and has consulted in a wide variety of industries, including healthcare, construction, amusement parks, publishing, and social media.
