Agile Practitioners' Book Club: Inspired
Rogue Eastside Pub & Pilot Brewery

Chad Dickerson (Former CEO of Etsy) says: "If you only have one book on product management, this is the one."

He is talking about the book 'INSPIRED: How to Create Tech Products Customers Love' by Marty Cagan. This book, now as a second edition, provides stories and information on how companies release a technology product that does not simply deliver a solution - but something customer love and rave about.

Review the book description to see if this is something you want to dive into, and join fellow product and development agile readers for a discussion. Oh, and for the listeners of the modern "reading" age, this book is available in audio.

Need more inspiration? Jeff Patton says of the book: "When I was a product leader, I experienced a fair bit of accidental successes and puzzling failures. Marty's writing has helped me understand how product managers and product organizations really should work. I wish I'd had this book years ago."

Visit our Meetup link to RSVP to the gathering. Thanks!

Ensuring your MVP Success with a Failure Mode Effects Analysis
Zoom

Every product has challenges and risks that must be managed to ensure success, help turn your unknown risks into known ones through the FMEA process.

An MVP (Minimum viable product) is a basic, launch-able version of your product that supports minimal yet must-have features (which define its value proposition).

Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a methodology for analyzing potential problems early in the product development cycle where it is easier to take action to overcome potential issues, thereby enhancing reliability through design. The tool is used to identify relationships between process and product requirements and the potential for unacceptable outputs and their effects.

In this session you will: Review the various forms of product risk analysis used in different industries. Use a basic template to ensure all product challenges and risks are accounted for + managed with your teams. Access a set of case-study examples to help ensure successful use of the tool in the future.

Startup 001: Your first experiment
NedSpace on 5th

Only 20 spots so sign up today!

Someone get the Fabreeze, because your idea STINKS!

A softer way of putting that is your idea has a hole in it somewhere. You should identify the holes in the boat before launching your transatlantic journey.

Forget your solution and run your first experiment by talking to customers and validating that they have the problem you think they have.

Learn the importance of Customer Development and why talking to customers is step one for any new idea, product, or service. After a brief intro to Lean and my personal story, we will set up your first problem/customer statement and conduct your first experiment using the Validation Board. Part of this class will be "out of the building" as we do in our Lean workshops.

We will cover the following in the this session. - Brief into to Lean and why it is valuable - Complete run-through of Validation Board (as this will be the basis of all experiments) - How to turn assumptions into experiments - Types of minimal viable products to build - What features do my customers want (setting up experiments for team) - Customer development tactics and exercises to implement - Case study of real life implementation and business model

About Adam Berk Entrepreneurial Science, Lean Startup Machine

I am the Global Director of Entrepreneurial Science at Lean Startup Machine. I have the great pleasure of travelling around the world to teach entrepreneurs about Lean methodologies. I have helped over 100 teams of entrepreneurs in Istanbul, Silicon Valley, NYC, Seattle, Vancouver, Montreal, and at The University of Florida, Microsoft, AOL, NewsInternational, etc.

Standing on the shoulders of giants like Eric Ries, Steve Blank, Patrick Vlaskovits and others, we have distilled the Lean methodology into actionable, sequential steps. I really enjoy teaching early stage companies how to identify their riskiest assumptions and test them using our own proprietary tool, the Validation Board. I wish I could have taken this class when I built my first startup, neighborrow.com and I used the methods I teach in my current app for wedding photos - where I validated the solution and had paying customers before I wrote a line of code.

Startup Founders in Tech [1on1 Conversations over Video]
Online.

Startup Founders of Tech Startups Only

We're startup founders building tech products to solve problems in the world.

We come together from different backgrounds and industries and it's this diversity that makes group members valuable to one another. Some of us code. Others do marketing. Some of us think we'll be fundraising forever... No matter, we've got overlapping challenges and experiences to share with each other for what to do (and just as importantly what not to do).

So, if you're looking to get smarter and move faster with your business, join us. We meet the 4th Tuesday of the month at 4pm Eastern / 1pm Pacific.

Reach out if you have questions.

Whitney

PS - If you're interested but not yet in the group, it's easy to join. RSVP for this event and I'll follow-up. We want to ensure the group remains as promised... a group of Startup Founders in Tech

The SaaS Product Roadmap
WeWork Custom House

You know the pain: there are so many features you want to build and bugs you want to fix, but there's not enough time to do it all. How should you prioritize? How can you align your product roadmap with your business goals?

We've all wasted time and money building things that nobody wanted, and we've neglected features and UX improvements that could've made a difference. The question is, how do we know what's the optimal way to use our development hours?

These are some of the topics we'll probably discuss:

• Jobs to Be Done (JTBD) framework to align features with business goals

• Scrum, Agile and Kanban frameworks to prioritize issues and manage dev teams

• How to incorporate user feedback into our product roadmap

• How to manage remote teams effectively

• The Lean way of testing assumptions to avoid building things that nobody wants

We're looking forward to sharing what I've learned from my mistakes building Billy, and learning from your experiences as well.

Coffee, tea and draft beer will be provided. Come hang out with other SaaS founders and share your story!

Sketch is a popular digital design tool for Mac. Most companies and screen-based designers use Sketch at work. (It's pretty great).

This workshop will be hands-on, and you will need your Mac laptop to follow along. By the end, you will have designed a couple of screens that you will test using InVision (a collaboration tool for design and product teams), animated through Principle or Framer, and handed off to developers through Zeplin.

You don't need to have any experience with Sketch to come. Beginners totally welcome!

Requirements:

  • A MacBook of some kind. Sketch is a Mac-only tool.
  • A copy of Sketch. You can download a free 30 day trial.

About the Instructor:

Kristin Lasita is a Product Designer at Simple, an online bank with super customer service and well-designed tools to help you save and budget.
