This Saturday at PASCAL we are offering a Hacker Symposium of sorts, featuring a few handy tools of the trade as well as two major frameworks often used in developing exploits and attacking systems or networks. We will be surveying several of the tools that are part of Kali, and easy to install on any Debian derived distro. It seems many folks, sometimes even the professionals already hip deep in the field of tech, are unaware of the power their packages wield! The wild hacker kidz at PASCAL are going to show you how to get started with packaged/pre-loaded tools like Burp Suite, Binwalk, Wireshark, Kismet and will also provide you with an overview of the Metasploit and Volatility frameworks. Come take your first step with Reverse Engineering at PASCAL using Binwalk! Excuse yourself and set up a proxy with Burp Suite! Breath deep and sniff packets with Kismet! Enjoy these puns and more, in person with Cylon and the rest of the misfit hackers of PDX!

Do you have an idea you'd like to pursue or a problem you'd like to solve but don't know where to start or who to start with?

Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. She will share the benefits of transparency to job seekers and employees, while also getting real with employers about transparency as the path to greater diversity, inclusion and prosperity.

Purpose:

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Using Wireframes to Communicate Product Vision

Over the past year, I learned how designing, creating, and sharing wireframes greatly facilitate communication both for the overall product vision that impacts multiple teams, and prepping smaller product features for engineers. For product managers that did not have a graphics background like me, "design" is an intimidating skill to tackle, but one that is valuable when working with engineers, designers, and marketing teams. In this presentation, I will share:
1) How I got started
2) A couple examples of how I used wireframes to align multiple teams to work towards the same product vision
3) Recommendations and pros/cons of different wireframing software to help people get started

Supercharging User Engagement by Supporting Autonomy: Practical Motivation Science for Product Managers
Jahed Momand, Head of Product Management at Conversa Health

The talk of the town in theories of behavior change in technology center on centuries old behaviorism, such as BJ Fogg's Behavior Model or Nir Eyal's Hook Model.

But, what if you're trying to precipitate a user behavior that's complex? That happens over long time domains? That isn't immediately rewardable?

How do you support users in finding the motivation to interact with your product, when push notifications just won't do the trick?

I'll talk about how we applied the science of motivation, Edward Deci's self-determination theory, to product design at Conversa Health, for outsized gains in patient engagement, retention, and NPS.

Jahed heads up the product team at Conversa Health, an automated care management chatbot for health systems, leading them to successful A and B rounds of funding during his tenure.

Before, he led the product growth team at Zoomcare, where he increased revenue and visits 240% over 18 rapid fire months, leading up to their acquisition by Peace Health.

Before that he worked with Dan Ariely of Predictably Irrational fame on applying behavioral economics to projects within Google, and worked in the adtech industry applying behavioral science to ad units (he's not proud of this work).

Way before then, he played poker professionally for a few years after grad school, where he completed an MS in Physics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

From garages to corporate offices, you will find pragmatic, creative people designing new solutions to pressing social and environmental issues and creating value for their companies, communities, and society at large. These social entrepreneurs are finding new ways to make a difference while changing how business is done. "Beer of Trust" is a key signing party with beer, and a chance to hang out and talk about PGP, encryption, and other related things!

What's a key-signing party?

A key-signing party is a get-together with PGP users for the purpose of meeting other PGP users and signing each other's keys. This helps to extend the "web of trust" to a great degree. Also, it sometimes serves as a forum to discuss strong cryptography and related issues.

What if I don't have a key yet?

If you don't have a PGP key yet, this is a good chance to get your feet wet. If you bring a computer, you can generate a test key at the event and experiment with sending messages to others there. It can be helpful to have someone present to walk you through the process the first time. It is recommended that you only generate a test key at the event, and later generate your real key in private. See below for links to some helpful resources for securely generating a key.

What do I need for this party?

If you are bringing a key to sign, then make sure you bring:

• A picture ID or some other way for people to match you to your identity
• Your key ID, key type, hex fingerprint, and key size. You can print out slips of paper to hand out your key info if you'd like.
• A pen/pencil or whatever you'd like to write with
• A computer is not required, and it is not recommended to use your computer to sign keys at the event

At the event, you'll meet others, confirm their key ID in person, and swap key IDs with them. Later when you get home, you can download the full keys and sign them, then upload the signature to the keyserver or email it to them directly.

How Can We Handle Errors? ~ Mike Calhoun

Most of the time, exceptions and errors are the last thing we want to put substantial thought into and are often addressed in that order. We tend to not want to think hard about how things could go wrong. However, from traditional apps to APIs or ArgumentErrors to NameErrors, handling exceptions gracefully is crucial to healthy applications. Let’s take a closer look at the Ruby Exception library and some strategies for catching and handling errors. We will look at what happens when exceptions are handled too well or not well enough. We will also take a closer look at the types of exceptions you can expect and where you can expect them. Lastly we’ll explore some examples for exception handling and testing in common rails application contexts.

The general idea of the Build2Learn twice-monthly sessions is to take several categories of tools, analyze their functionality, and re-implement them using your language of choice.

The goal is not to present a tutorial. The goal is to have discussion around the process of breaking the problem down into specific use cases and requirements, i.e. tasks that can be more easily implemented.

The core goal of programming is problem solving, the aim here is to facilitate and encourage this skill.

There will be a focus on performing code review and encouraging people to demo their progress to the group.

Session_0 will focus on the following:

>Help individuals set up their development environment
>Make sure that the git workflow is well understood
>Help with a language selection
Note: while there will not be any prescribed languages,we suggest
either python or javascript. This is not to deter the use of other

Much has been said about building re-frame applications in the small, but how well do these same techniques perform building large applications? In practice, our team found traditional approaches to events and state management led to highly-coupled code that was difficult to maintain and test.

Have you wanted to try web development but are unsure about where to start or lacking motivation? Enter the Python Pirates! We are all about working through free classes together to help each other learn and grow into top notch programmers! This week kicks off an introduction to our next free class series. If you have thought about joining the Pyrates now is the time!

This session will be purely informational. There will be a discussion about what you can expect to learn from this series. All skill levels are welcome to join. Prior programming experience in Python will be helpful but any prior programming experience will do.

A lot of times there is parking right in front of the building. If this is not the case I recommend trying 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Ave. There are usually spots down that way. Parking isn't free until after 7pm so don't forget to pay! There is also a lot right next door if you don't want to mess with street parking.

A Hack the Dot is a two-hour hackathon where coding school students, junior developers, experienced developers, marketers, designers and curious web people come together to build ideas around a domain name. Our events are meant to be a quick and fun way to build a humorous (and functional) product quickly while meeting people in your tech/startup community.

How does it work? Step 1: Attendees are broken up into random teams and assigned spirit animals to guide their efforts. Step 3: Teams have just two hours to come up with a functioning site inspired by that domain. The team builds the most creative and fun idea for the domain wins.

Participants will be judged on four criteria: (1) functionality, (2) design, (3) humor, and (4) creative domain name interpretation.

More than $350,000 will be up for grabs. We are looking for community orgs, startups, artists & others with innovative projects in Portland to get on the stage.

We flip around the typical roles, asking some of Portland's leading funders to make the kind of elevator pitch they're typically on the other end of. Each investor will get five minutes and up to five slides to win over attendees. Following the last pitch the investors will have a panel discussion to help founders put their best foot forward.

We are excited to have special guest Arlan Hamilton participating, founder and managing partner of Backstage Capital. Her emergence on the venture capital stage has been chronicled in Fortune, Fast Company, Inc and Tech Crunch. Her firm has made over 80 investments in early stage companies in the last two years (including a handful of PDX firms).
