At the same time, diversity of thought leads to innovations in design that have the power to transform everyday life.

Please join us and our incredible panel of diversity, design + technology leaders, as we seek to address what diversity means, not only in the world of design and technology, but in the world at large.

Portland Startup Week: Investing in Justice
Idealist

There's been a recent shift in how activists are trying to bring about social change, and SJF is at the forefront of this shift.

Come find out how you can get involved!

This article has a great breakdown on this new trend of entrepreneurial activism:

For some activists, being entrepreneurial has meant the following things: treating their activist work like a business, turning to popular social media platforms to put out their own press releases and looking for people to invest in their initiative with money and not just good faith.

More about the hosting organizations:

Social Justice Fund Northwest is a foundation working at the frontlines of social change. They leverage the resources of their members to foster significant, long-term social justice solutions throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana & Wyoming.

PDXNALTA is a networking group for underrepresented people of color in tech.

Idealist is all about connecting idealists - people who want to do good - with opportunities for action and collaboration. With more than 100,000 organizations and 1.4 million monthly visitors to our English, Spanish & French sites, Idealist helps people move from intention to action all over the world.

Website
Beer of Trust Key-Signing
Loyal Legion Pub

"Beer of Trust" is a key signing party with beer, and a chance to hang out and talk about PGP, encryption, and other related things!

What's a key-signing party?

A key-signing party is a get-together with PGP users for the purpose of meeting other PGP users and signing each other's keys. This helps to extend the "web of trust" to a great degree. Also, it sometimes serves as a forum to discuss strong cryptography and related issues.

What if I don't have a key yet?

If you don't have a PGP key yet, this is a good chance to get your feet wet. If you bring a computer, you can generate a test key at the event and experiment with sending messages to others there. It can be helpful to have someone present to walk you through the process the first time. It is recommended that you only generate a test key at the event, and later generate your real key in private. See below for links to some helpful resources for securely generating a key.

What do I need for this party?

If you are bringing a key to sign, then make sure you bring:

  • A picture ID or some other way for people to match you to your identity
  • Your key ID, key type, hex fingerprint, and key size. You can print out slips of paper to hand out your key info if you'd like.
  • A pen/pencil or whatever you'd like to write with
  • A computer is not required, and it is not recommended to use your computer to sign keys at the event

At the event, you'll meet others, confirm their key ID in person, and swap key IDs with them. Later when you get home, you can download the full keys and sign them, then upload the signature to the keyserver or email it to them directly.

RSVP here.

Hack the Dot: PDX Startup Week
Vacasa

A Hack the Dot is a two-hour hackathon where coding school students, junior developers, experienced developers, marketers, designers and curious web people come together to build ideas around a domain name. Our events are meant to be a quick and fun way to build a humorous (and functional) product quickly while meeting people in your tech/startup community.

There will be pizza. And beer.

What to Bring / How to Prepare: • Bring your laptop (fully charged). Bring your charger just in case. • Install the Atom text editor. Go here: https://atom.io/ • Setup a github.com account

How does it work? Step 1: Attendees are broken up into random teams and assigned spirit animals to guide their efforts. Step 2: The teams are provided with the same undisclosed domain name by Name.com, arbitrary and often hilarious. Step 3: Teams have just two hours to come up with a functioning site inspired by that domain. The team builds the most creative and fun idea for the domain wins.

Participants will be judged on four criteria: (1) functionality, (2) design, (3) humor, and (4) creative domain name interpretation.

What do you get at the event? FOOD! SWAG! FRIENDS!

How much does it cost? It’s FREE!

Questions? Send them to HacktheDot at name.com.

Ringler booths will be filled with PSF alumni founders and mentors, so additional rotations give you extra feedback. Everyone gets pizza (and a beer!)

Event capacity - 50 people.

Immersive startups: A conversation with AR/VR founders
OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry)

Immersive technology like augmented and virtual reality is creating a rapidly growing new industry. A report from Tech Trends’ Editor-in-chief, Alice Bonsaio cites this fast growing sector estimated to be $162B by 2020! Far beyond gaming and entertainment, there is potential for this technology to disrupt everything from healthcare and architecture to changing the way we maintain global supply chain. Join us for an engaging evening of conversation with early startup founders and those that support them, as we explore the experience of being on the ground floor of this new immersive reality.

The evening will start with a presentation from Russell Ladson, the Founder of Drop, a ViveX company. Russell will then be joined by two to three other local startup founders in the immersive tech space. We will have a candid conversation about their experiences as founders in the new field, the current state of this technology and where it is headed, along with Q&A from the audience. It will be an insightful and engaging panel.

We are excited to have special guest Arlan Hamilton participating, founder and managing partner of Backstage Capital. Her emergence on the venture capital stage has been chronicled in Fortune, Fast Company, Inc and Tech Crunch. Her firm has made over 80 investments in early stage companies in the last two years (including a handful of PDX firms).

Building Reusable re-frame Components w/ Ryan Neufeld
Puppet

Much has been said about building re-frame applications in the small, but how well do these same techniques perform building large applications? In practice, our team found traditional approaches to events and state management led to highly-coupled code that was difficult to maintain and test.

In this talk we'll explore why this happens and some simple techniques you can use to create more re-usable re-frame code without boilerplate or any 3rd party libraries.

Biography Ryan is a Clojure developer, author, and founder of Homegrown Labs (http://homegrownlabs.ca ), a consultancy and education company based in Winnipeg, Canada.

Since April 2017, Ryan & Homegrown have been working with Funding Circle building rich admin applications using ClojureScript & re-frame.

Beyond consulting, Ryan organizes Clojure Remote (http://clojureremote.com )–an online conference focussed on remote Clojure & ClojureScript developers. Keep an eye out for ClojureScript Days coming Summer of 2018.

Startup Weekend Vancouver 2018
through CoLab Coworking - The Collective

Your idea in 54 hours

Do you have an idea you'd like to pursue or a problem you'd like to solve but don't know where to start or who to start with?

Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend, you'll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You'll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Techstars Startup Weekend is a full weekend-long experience. Your ticket includes: 7 full (and delicious) meals over the course of the weekend Benefits and discounts from our global partners One-on-one time with amazing mentors A new network of developers, designers, and entrepreneurs eager, like you, to change the world. PASCAL Hackerspace - Tools That Pwn: A Hacker Symposium

This Saturday at PASCAL we are offering a Hacker Symposium of sorts, featuring a few handy tools of the trade as well as two major frameworks often used in developing exploits and attacking systems or networks. We will be surveying several of the tools that are part of Kali, and easy to install on any Debian derived distro. It seems many folks, sometimes even the professionals already hip deep in the field of tech, are unaware of the power their packages wield! The wild hacker kidz at PASCAL are going to show you how to get started with packaged/pre-loaded tools like Burp Suite, Binwalk, Wireshark, Kismet and will also provide you with an overview of the Metasploit and Volatility frameworks. Come take your first step with Reverse Engineering at PASCAL using Binwalk! Excuse yourself and set up a proxy with Burp Suite! Breath deep and sniff packets with Kismet! Enjoy these puns and more, in person with Cylon and the rest of the misfit hackers of PDX!

We will set aside time to answer questions, and hold demonstrations of each utility discussed. This is all about what YOU want to learn!! Questions? please email Cylon--> [masked]. PASCAL also has a Discord server as means of communication regarding upcoming events, news in infosec and memes (inquire within).
If you RSVP and are no longer able to make it, please do take the time to change your RSVP so that someone else may attend, even if it is only an hour before! Thanks!

Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to JavaScript: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy
The Tech Academy

We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn."

At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.

The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to JavaScript. JavaScript is universally recognized as a foundational language. It is present in every platform imaginable: like browsers, mobile, and desktop applications.

This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.

In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of these popular technologies - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.

Please Note:
---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.
---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.

As an added benefit, each participant will be paired with a mentor, as well as have access to a mentor in each specialty for the duration of the 10-week series.

In addition to formal instruction in weekly classes, each participant in OEN’s Startup Series will have access to a network of mentors covering each of the session topics below. PASCAL Hackerspace - Build2Learn: Build It, And They Will Pwn.
PASCAL

Welcome to PASCAL Hackerspace's newest hands-on workshop: Build2Learn!

The general idea of the Build2Learn twice-monthly sessions is to take several categories of tools, analyze their functionality, and re-implement them using your language of choice.

The goal is not to present a tutorial. The goal is to have discussion around the process of breaking the problem down into specific use cases and requirements, i.e. tasks that can be more easily implemented.

The core goal of programming is problem solving, the aim here is to facilitate and encourage this skill.

There will be a focus on performing code review and encouraging people to demo their progress to the group.

Session_0 will focus on the following:

>Help individuals set up their development environment
>Make sure that the git workflow is well understood
>Help with a language selection
Note: while there will not be any prescribed languages,we suggest
either python or javascript. This is not to deter the use of other
languages. Just to suggest that there may be more help available using
something listed above.
>Help users install git for their operating system
>Help users create a github account and setup git to use it
>Help users install language and tooling (if needed)
>Help users install text editor and discuss the merits of different options

For more information, please visit-https://randy5235.github.io/build2learn/ or view the current repository directly on Github here: https://github.com/randy5235/build2learn . How Can We Handle Errors? ~ Mike Calhoun

Most of the time, exceptions and errors are the last thing we want to put substantial thought into and are often addressed in that order. We tend to not want to think hard about how things could go wrong. However, from traditional apps to APIs or ArgumentErrors to NameErrors, handling exceptions gracefully is crucial to healthy applications. Let’s take a closer look at the Ruby Exception library and some strategies for catching and handling errors. We will look at what happens when exceptions are handled too well or not well enough. We will also take a closer look at the types of exceptions you can expect and where you can expect them. Lastly we’ll explore some examples for exception handling and testing in common rails application contexts.

Portland HashiCorp User Group - AWS Deployments and FinOps With Cloudability - MeetUp
Cloudability - 334 NW 11th Ave · Portland, OR

Agenda:

6pm-6:30pm Arrive and mingle - Enjoy food and beverages

6:30pm-7:00pm "Intelligent decisions about cloud usage with Cloudability’s FinOps platform" presented by Patrick Zumar- Senior SE @ Cloudability

A new operating model for the cloud, called FinOps, is emerging that enables a shift — a combination of systems, best practices and culture — to increase an organization’s ability to understand cloud costs and make tradeoffs. In the same way that DevOps revolutionized development by breaking down silos and increasing agility, FinOps increases the business value of cloud by bringing together technology, business and finance professionals with a new set of processes.

FinOps has several fundamental building blocks we’ve seen high performing organizations put in place to gain competitive advantage. Patrick Zumar will share what we’ve learned from guiding hundreds of large and small cloud adopters on their journey to adopt FinOps.

7:00pm-7:30pm "Reducing Cost & Risk via Automation with Terraform on AWS" presented by Chris Dunlap- Sr. Solution Engineer @ HashiCorp

Terraform is a tool for building, changing, and versioning infrastructure safely and efficiently. This talk will focus on how customers can leverage Terraform to eliminate unnecessary cloud spend by 30-40% and reduce risk by baking guardrails and best practices into their automation.

Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Python: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy

The Tech Academy is offering a free course providing an introduction to Python. Python is a popular programming language for general-purpose programming. It is particularly easy to learn for those new to coding.

This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.

In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of this popular computer language - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.

If that sounds like you, you’re going to love this one hour workshop!

Legacy fundraising relies on access and entitlement, rather than skills to win. So what does that mean for those of us who have been excluded from those networks? How do founders with diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, genders and identities gain access to capital?

In this one-hour workshop, you’ll discover:

The #1 barrier for founders to get equitable access to capital (and it’s probably not what you think!) The “normal” raise process vs the effective raise process The top 3 things you can start doing immediately to build confidence, competence, and capability for your raise The Equity Capital Collective™ (EqCo - pronounced "echo") offers consulting and training for early and growth-stage startup founders. Our mission is to enable and empower entrepreneurs who have been excluded from access to capital, networks, and resources, such as women, people of color, and LGBTQIA communities.

Our founder community learns a unique tactical and strategic fundraising methodology that develops critical skills and insights and addressing the fundamental internal barriers associated with an unequal experience of entitlement.

Founders gain confidence, competence, and capability as they lead their raise, break open critical influence networks and deliver innovative ventures that embrace a broader community of stakeholders in both investment and returns.

Together, we’re insisting on a more equitable landscape of opportunity and access for a greater diversity of founders.

Drinks and snacks will be provided.

Using Wireframes to Communicate Product Vision
Amy King, Software Product Manager at Digimarc

Over the past year, I learned how designing, creating, and sharing wireframes greatly facilitate communication both for the overall product vision that impacts multiple teams, and prepping smaller product features for engineers. For product managers that did not have a graphics background like me, "design" is an intimidating skill to tackle, but one that is valuable when working with engineers, designers, and marketing teams. In this presentation, I will share:
1) How I got started
2) A couple examples of how I used wireframes to align multiple teams to work towards the same product vision
3) Recommendations and pros/cons of different wireframing software to help people get started

Amy King is a software product manager. she likes learning about different industries and how people use technology in their jobs, then figure out how her team can build software to help people be more efficient with their work

Supercharging User Engagement by Supporting Autonomy: Practical Motivation Science for Product Managers
Jahed Momand, Head of Product Management at Conversa Health

The talk of the town in theories of behavior change in technology center on centuries old behaviorism, such as BJ Fogg's Behavior Model or Nir Eyal's Hook Model.

But, what if you're trying to precipitate a user behavior that's complex? That happens over long time domains? That isn't immediately rewardable?

How do you support users in finding the motivation to interact with your product, when push notifications just won't do the trick?

I'll talk about how we applied the science of motivation, Edward Deci's self-determination theory, to product design at Conversa Health, for outsized gains in patient engagement, retention, and NPS.

Jahed heads up the product team at Conversa Health, an automated care management chatbot for health systems, leading them to successful A and B rounds of funding during his tenure.

Before, he led the product growth team at Zoomcare, where he increased revenue and visits 240% over 18 rapid fire months, leading up to their acquisition by Peace Health.

Before that he worked with Dan Ariely of Predictably Irrational fame on applying behavioral economics to projects within Google, and worked in the adtech industry applying behavioral science to ad units (he's not proud of this work).

Way before then, he played poker professionally for a few years after grad school, where he completed an MS in Physics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
