CEO Group Coaching Program
DoubleTree Hotel & Executive Meeting Center Portland - Lloyd Center

Do you want to figure out what’s holding you back from greater profitability, revenue growth and fully engaging your employees in your vision for the company?

The CEO Coaching Program will unlock your power as a leader to achieve these goals and bring about growth for your company, as a direct result of your contributions.

How It Works

  1. . Pick a game-changing project for the company
  2. . Work on it intensively for six months with structured support, making huge strides
  3. . Receive and give coaching among other CEOs from comparable organizations
  4. . Be pushed out of the comfort zone and into the growth zone, by highly qualified coaches

Agenda The SPTLI format involves 12 three-hour group-coaching sessions over a six-month period, meeting bi-weekly. There will also be 30 minute, one-on-one coaching phone calls in the weeks between sessions.

Sessions:

  1. . Introduction to the Process, and Identify each CEO’s Project
  2. . Refine the Project and Get Feedback
  3. . Finalize Project and Create Action Plan
  4. . Metrics and Performance Management
  5. . Uncover Blind Spots, Receive Coaching, Advance the Project
  6. . How a CEO can Coach Direct Reports, Advance the Project, Trouble Shoot
  7. . More on CEO as Coach, Advanced Delegation Skills, Advance the Project
  8. . At least one CEO has a major setback by now; we all use it as a learning tool as we get that CEO back on track – everyone learns from this experience; remaining sessions are highly customized to what emerges in the group
  9. . From Breakdown to Breakthrough – using the setback to illuminate problems and create growth
  10. . Begin to wrap up the project, Delegation trouble-shooting, Empowered work teams
  11. . Further wrap-up and trouble shooting
  12. . Celebration and planning for how to keep up the momentum

As the CEO, you will be asked to bring in a challenge – some burning need, chronic problem or stalled initiative that, if improved, would break you and your company out to the next level.

In the group sessions, you will receive frank, powerful coaching from our facilitators – a former CEO and a highly experienced business coach. You will also get feedback and support from your peers in the room and guest CEO’s who will participate in some of the sessions. You make commitments for keeping your project on track every week and report on results at each session.

CEO & CIO Executive Coaching Preview
DoubleTree Hotel & Executive Meeting Center Portland - Lloyd Center

In this powerful three-hour session, you will learn and practice a new way to coach your own direct reports, a method you can put to use immediately — while getting a preview into the upcoming “CEO and CIO Group Coaching Programs” from the Portland Transformational Leadership Initiative (PTLI) and Oregon Training Network (OTN).

A recent Portland Development Commission (PDC) survey of the Portland technology community found that the single greatest need is for more effective mentoring opportunities. We are responding to this need by adapting our already successful C-level six-month coaching program – now focused exclusively on CEOs and CIOs. In this three-hour preview session, you will get a taste of the full six-month program while experiencing a highly effective and structured approach to executive and peer coaching.

You will walk away from this first session having new insights into how you work with your direct reports and you will have a stronger sense of areas you’d like to improve in, related to your ongoing work as a CEO or CIO. We do this through illuminating blind spots, building up weak areas, and amplifying your strengths.

Find out if “CEO or CIO Group Coaching” is right for you, and walk out with new tools in this dynamic stand-alone session for coaching your team and helping them coach their direct reports.

Jim McCarthy on The Core Protocols
Puppet Labs on NW Park (old office)

Great software comes from getting your team’s best ideas into the product. Jim McCarthy, who led the legendary turnaround of the Visual C++ group at Microsoft, left Microsoft in 1996 to create a team dynamics laboratory to figure out how to always create a create a high performance team.

The McCarthy lab has focused extensively on this challenge, and has produced 11 rich, precise protocols (called the Core) for making unanimous decisions, supporting quality thinking, strengthening design iterations, and incorporating feedback, emotions, nobility, and passion into products.

Learn about these protocols in this motivating, challenging talk. In just a few minutes, you can pick up the fundamentals of an entirely new class of tool.

• Do you notice too much discussion and arguing and would prefer the best ideas would just get implemented now? –Learn about the Decider Protocol which guarantees unanimous team decisions with accountability and moves the team forward with a bias toward action.

• Do you accept that it is vitally important that you get the opinions of others about the quality of work products but notice that it is consistently painful to give and receive feedback? – Learn about the Perfection Protocol which solves all the problems associated with criticism.

• Do you notice that dumb things consistently happen on your team and everyone seems to lack self-awareness to some degree, including you? – Learn about the Core Commitments which provide a team constitution about commitment and accountability to the team. And learn about the Personal Alignment Protocol which allows each team member to address self-awareness around courage, integrity, passion and other virtuous behaviors.

This event is free and is at our new location, Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).

The program starts at 7:00 pm.

After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion.

The Emerging Leadership Paradigm: How Portland Will Lead the Way
The MAC

Over the last 50 years the business environment has become more complex. The old paradigm of simply using fixed measures that predictably control outcomes is failing to produce the results they once did. New forces beyond the efficient flow of activity are becoming more significant.

PANELISTS: Norman Wolfe, Founder, Quantum Leaders Tom Sedory, Director of IT & Sustainability, Nike Danielle Forsyth, CEO & Co-Founder, Thetus Corporation Renee Spears, President & Founder, Rose City Mortgage David Garnand, Executive Director, College Housing NW

The new emerging paradigm moves us from a mechanistic orientation to one that views the organization as a living organism. This paradigm views organizations as an integral part of an eco-system, where purpose, meaning and relationships are important key drivers of success. These organizations are dynamic, responsive to ever-changing conditions, transparent and make a positive impact. Like newly planted seeds, a new paradigm needs soil to be nurtured and grown in. Portland’s unique culture provides the nutrients to make this the perfect location for companies to lead the way to a new world of business.

Attend this event to learn more about: Different strategies used by local companies who are exploring the shift to the new paradigm
How companies measure progress in strengthening relationships to customers, employees, and the environment Ways to leverage Portland’s unique culture to benefit your business

Leading in Context: Introduction to the Cynefin Framework
McMenamins Ringlers Pub

Have you ever wondered why some approaches work well in one context and not so well in others? In order to improve our chances for success, we need to understand the nature of the situation we are working with in order to take appropriate action. Failing to recognize the nature of the situation at hand results in misinformed decisions with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Cynefin is a sensemaking framework that helps people understand their context and situation in order to take appropriate action.

In this meetup we will review the basics of the Cynefin framework and discuss other options for continued learning.

You'll uncover the Only Universal Truth of Leadership and what it means for your advancement. (You'll be able to use this to coach yourself and others to leadership greatness.)

You'll learn from famed instructor Thomas Cox, discoverer of The Only Universal Truth of Leadership and Director of Becoming a Best Boss Training & Coaching, who will give you the naked truth about what it takes to get promoted. SIM-Portland May Meeting: "What is so smart about SD-WAN?"
University Club of Portland

Over the past 20 years, advances in Information technologies have continuously remade the business world. Think– the Internet, virtualization, cloud, the smartphone to name a few. That has however been one exception – the wide area network (WAN), that is … until now. One of the hottest topics in IT Infrastructure is Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN or SDWAN). It is a specific application of software-defined networking (SDN) technology applied to WAN connections. WAN links are used to connect enterprise networks – including branch offices and data centers – over large geographic distances. SDWAN technologies promise the moon; lower costs, faster performance, business agility to name a few. So, what is real and what is pure marketing?

Come hear from someone who has been an Oregon pioneer in SD-WAN. John Spiegel from Columbia Sportswear will provide an overview of SD-WAN, relate his first-hand experiences implementing this new technology, the results he has seen and how it has changed John’s approach to the ever-evolving landscape of IT infrastructure (both good and bad).

John Spiegel is the Sr Manager of Infrastructure at Columbia Sportswear Company. He is a leader with 20 years of experience in Information Technology and Networking. Forward-leading, big thinker with a passion for transformative and cutting-edge technologies such as SD-WAN and Cloud. Believer in the power of sharing and collaborating with other like-minded individuals to evolve the industry. Outside of work, focus and energy is on family, brewing beer, Duck and Packer football and currently planning a trip to Africa with his family.

Cynefin & Complexity Foundations
through Hotel Rose

In today’s increasingly volatile and uncertain world, there is a need for new ways of making sense of current situations and managing in new and rapidly shifting contexts. Our past practices and approaches are failing us and what had worked reliably during more stable times in the past is unfortunately proving inadequate for the dynamic present. This course introduces concepts which challenge the deeply rooted thinking patterns that have been ingrained by years of conventional thinking.

Take a dive into complexity theory, and the practical implications for operating in a world of inherent uncertainty. Learn about the Cynefin framework – and how to apply it in organisations; how to make better decisions, dependent on the situation; as well as a range of practical methods that you can apply directly in organisations.

What it’s about:

Complexity has become a buzzword for the world we work within - this course provides you with the foundational tools to understand what it means to act and manage in complexity.

Cynefin and Complexity Foundations forms the core component of Cognitive Edge's training offerings. It contributes the basic scaffolds and key components of your sense-making toolkit for working in complex environments.

Who it is for:

This course designed for people who work in constantly-evolving, dynamic situations, dealing daily with uncertainty and risk, and looking for a enhanced compass for building organisations that are both resilient and innovative. Whether you work in an organisation navigating intractable problems, or are a consultant looking to include complexity principles into your practice - or if you are simply complexity-curious - this Foundations class is for you.

What we will cover:

This has been designed as a 2-day session - a combination of deep immersion into the fundamentals of working in complexity, and with the Cynefin framework. This will be substantiated by lots of hands-on methods-based activities, and group-based discussions.

The session will begin with an introduction to complexity, and the natural and human science that sit behind the naturalising tradition in sense-making. Discover and manage the evolutionary potential of the present by increasing situational awareness of the types of systems that we sit within, and how to modulate within complex systems.

The Cynefin framework has subtleties and nuances which are not easily accessible to the casual reader. Building on the basics outlined in the Harvard Business Review article, this 2-day session will help you dig deeper into the uses of the framework, accompanied by facilitated workshop activities and tools.

To see a brochure for this course, goto http://cognitive-edge.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/CynefinFoundations-brochure-2018-v2.pdf

Agile Practitioners' Book Club: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team
Rogue Eastside Pub & Pilot Brewery

Join us for a beer (or beverage of your choice) and a snack at the Rogue Eastside Pub to discuss Patrick Lencioni's book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team". If you work with teams and team success, this book may be an interesting addition to your library.

Lencioni tells the story of a troubled Silicon Valley firm and the new CEO faced with uniting and guiding a team of leaders with the aim of making the company a success. Through this business fable, Lencioni highlights the common dysfunctions that he claims can cripple any team: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. He offers ways to assess a team and provides actionable steps on how to overcome each of the 5 dysfunctions.

Food for thought:

  • This book tells the tale of a CEO refashioning the dynamic of an executive committee. Do fables apply to everyone?
  • Is Lencioni right? Does he name the most important dysfunctions that challenge the teams you work with?
  • What can we learn from this representative tale about development teams? Where can we add our own wisdom to Lencioni's model?

We look forward to learning what Agile mindsets bring to the table! Tip: It's worth reading some online book reviews for critical perspectives.

Change Management in the Startup Ecosystem
Cayuse

Change Management in the Startup Ecosystem is a workshop designed to help managers, teams, and leaders understand and manage change in their startups. This will be an interactive, practical session with overviews of established models, enlightening conversations, and activities for applying the models that hold strong in startups.

Let's be real, in a startup there is always a change happening! It's constant. And if employees can be more aware of the emotional and organizational implications of change, and have strategies and tools to help with these transitions, work will be smoother, and goals will be achieved quicker.

This workshop is designed for people managers of all levels, but can be beneficial for individual contributors and HR employees as well. Before the session, we'll ask you to think about a change you (and/or your team members) are actively experiencing, and come ready to discuss and work through this real-world scenario.

Agile Practitioners Book Club: Flat Army
Rogue Eastside Pub & Pilot Brewery

RSVP: https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/256215771/

Join us for a beer (or beverage of your choice) and a snack at the Rogue Eastside Pub to discuss "Flat Army" by Dan Pontefract. He says he has the strategy to solve the challenges of unhappy and uncommitted employees, and it's based on empowerment:

"Your people are your most valuable asset, and if you want them to excel (and your profits to soar), you'll need to abandon your traditional command-and-control management style and adopt a collaborative, open leadership approach―one that engages and empowers your people. While this isn't a particularly new idea, many leaders, while they may pay lip service to it, don't really understand what it means. And most of those who do get it lack the skills for putting it into practice. In Flat Army you'll find powerful leadership models and tools that help you challenge yourself and overcome your personal obstacles to change, while pushing the boundaries of organizational change to create a culture of collaboration."

Let's discuss the pros and cons of his approached and compare it to our real-world experiences and experiments.

We look forward to your creative insights!

Tip: It's worth reading some online book reviews for critical perspectives.

SIM-Portland January Meeting: "Influence, Persuasion and Negotiation"
University Club of Portland

Martin gives you stories, studies, humor and data from the stage that teach and inspire attendees to look at influence, persuasion and negotiation in a very different way. He mastered methods for determining objective probabilities with the best strategies for success in transactions and disputes needed in the information economy. But this was not enough. His research then focused on tempering this objective approach with understanding human behavior and brain function. The result: we do well when we know our choices in how we communicate our needs to the world.

About the Speaker
Martin Medeiros began his career supporting SABRE Technology Group for American Airlines' flight reservation system. After obtaining his law degree he was recognized by his client, Ryder, with the RISE Award for information systems excellence. As a negotiation leader in thousands of deals and disputes over the last 25 years, information technology remains his passion. Martin authored three books on influence, persuasion, negotiation and technology.

Speaking and offering workshops to start-ups, Fortune 500 companies, Am Law 100 firms, trade associations, strategic investment associations, universities, non-profits, governments and healthcare providers, Martin also presented to hundreds of attorneys as: a Board Member of the Oregon Law Institute at Lewis and Clark College of Law, a speaker for the Washington State Bar Corporate Counsel Section, and as Chair of the Technology Law Section of the Oregon State Bar. Martin's skill as a keynote speaker and teacher were forged on the anvil of his unique experiences, experiences attendees benefit from by leaving his talks with immediately actionable takeaways.

0111 Portland CTO Conference
World Trade Center Two

Come spend a day with fellow CTOs based in Portland for a single track, one day conference touching on product management, leadership and technology.

Agenda

8:00 am Check In/Registration

8:45 am Welcome!

Etienne de Bruin, Founder 7CTOs

9:00 – 9:45 am Keynote: Making the Product Engineering Marriage Thrive

Vidya Dinamani, Founder & Partner Product Rebels Heather Samarin, Co-Founder/Principal Product Rebels What makes a great product family work is having the product parents, Product & Engineering, in a great relationship. So, what goes into making this work? This talk explores the root causes of most dysfunctions and provides the product perspective in not just identifying and overcoming, but put you on the path to thriving.

10:00 – 10:30 am Distributed team: Benefits and Challenges

Oleg Pashigorev, CTO Promomash How to assemble team on a small budget, without sacrificing speed or quality? We usually hear 2 type of answers: it’s impossible or go hire dev shop from India and we all know what to expect from it. But sometimes we do hear a story that somebody managed to build a great product with offshore team. How did they do it? In this talk I will share with you what it took to create a successful distributed development team. We will go over benefits and challenges as well as restrictions that we had to put in order to work with people from countries that are at WAR. We will also discuss specifics in the hiring process and practices that help us create the culture we all desperately seek and want.

10:45 – 11:15 am Degeneracy, Code, and Innovation, or: How to Fail By Succeeding

Aaron Longwell, Lead Technical Advisor U.S. Department of State When we write software, we are “encoding” our observations about the present for use in the future. But we don’t know much about the future, and our observations about the present are often incomplete and biased. Every organism on the planet faces this problem, and Evolutionary Biology is the study of how organisms have attempted to solve it. In this talk, we’ll explore how we can take inspiration from the natural world and apply it to software and organizational design.

11:30 am – 12:00 pm Design Thinking and Agile for Family Life

Alex Zub, CTO Handsome Many of us use the Agile methodologies and the Design Thinking approach in design and development activities at work. What if we could apply things that make our work so effective and efficient to family life? This talk will discuss the value of leveraging professional methodologies in our everyday life.

12:00 pm Break for Lunch

1:30 – 3:00 pm Workshop: Building Products that Customers (and your team) Love

Heather Samarin, Co-Founder/Principal Product Rebels Vidya Dinamani, Founder & Partner Product Rebels Building products that customers love is the goal of every product team. In this workshop, we work through three core components that every leader can take back to their teams to sharpen product focus, improve team collaboration, and raise overall engagement. This highly interactive workshop is fun, immediately applicable and will help you develop a better rapport and partnership with your product leader.

3:15 – 3:45 pm

Jerome Bonhomme, CTO American Specialty Health

4:00 – 4:30 pm

Sergey Sundukovskiy, Co-Founder, CTO and Chief Product Officer at Raken, Inc.

4:45 – 5:15 pm Mechanical Confidence

Adam Cuppy, COO ZEAL More often then not “confidence” is taught as a practice of positive self-talk; that confidence is the result of belief and time. While this appears to be true, it isn’t. Confidence can be developed, mechanically. We can be more confident without having to solely believe we’re confident. Confidence, in fact, is the result of engrained habit. This talks looks at how you can develop a process to instill what so many of us wish we had more of.

SIM-Portland February Meeting - "IT and Ethics: What does it mean for you and your organization"
University Club of Portland

Keynote Speaker: Richard Appleyard, PhD, Deputy CIO, Oregon Secretary of State; President-elect Portland Chapter of SIM

What are ethics and why are they relevant in the IT field? Why is a code of ethics important to us personally and to our organizations? How do you develop and maintain an ethical code for the use of Information Technology in an organization? These are just some of the questions we will consider at the next SIM Portland meeting. Everyone is familiar with the concept of medical ethics and the Hippocratic Oath, “First do no harm.” Ethics are a set of mutually agreed upon rules that encompass the personal and shared standards of behavior expected by a group of people, typically within a given profession. There are now ethical investments and mutual funds that hold to certain principles when selecting companies to invest in.

Information Technology is advancing at an ever increasing rate, and is having an increasing impact on our lives. The recent Facebook / Cambridge Analytica scandal demonstrated what can happen in organizations when there is no ethical grounding, and decisions are simply left up to the bottom line, or market forces. Join host, and incoming SIM-Portland President, Richard Appleyard for the February Chapter meeting where he will share his ideas and facilitate discussion around embracing more formal ethical standards with in the IT management profession. Come and be part of the process to discover what this means to you, to your colleagues and how we might develop a Code of Ethics at the SIM Portland chapter.

Learning Objectives:
+ Review & discuss ethics, its history and relevance to the field of IT
+ Review ethical frameworks and discuss which apply to IT
+ Consider the creation of a SIM-Portland Working Group to develop a Code of Ethics for the Chapter

Speaker Biography
Richard is a seasoned Technology Leader in IT Operations, Application Development & Web Management, with a foundation in Informatics Research. A Human Centered Framework to acceleration concepts to AI Capabilities
Tualatin Country Club

The benefits of AI are pervasively accepted, and yet a paradox exists between AI's potential and its success: Research shows that up to 90% of AI/ML initiatives fail adoption; 70% of AI/ML models don't evolve; less than 20% of enterprise functions use AI, and 50% of CDOs fail within the first year. These staggering statistics illuminate organizations' tendency to prioritize artificial intelligence's technological challenges over context, relevancy, and experience. Mindful AI framework is designed to address these challenges and has been successfully implemented to help enterprises accelerate their AI journey with measurable outcomes.

Bio: Ahmer Inam is the Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer at Relanto, a global business process transformation and enterprise resiliency firm. Ahmer has more than 20 years of experience driving organizational transformation with intelligent digital solutions. His experience includes leadership roles at firms like Nike, PwC, and Wells Fargo. Ahmer is a member of the healthcare brain trust at XPRIZE where he is responsible for designing incentives based moonshot innovation competitions. Additionally, Ahmer serves as a Data & AI expert with International Institute for Analytics, and he is on the joint World Economic Forum and Responsible AI Institute task force that is designing the world’s first responsible AI certification program. Ahmer is also on the Forbes Technology Council and an advisor to a number of healthcare startups. Ahmer holds two masters degrees, one each in Industrial Engineering and Economics and a bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering.
