Write and Make Money Now!

Electronic books are revolutionizing the publishing world. What started as a small group of writers making money with download books on the internet, has now turned into a million dollar phenomenon, especially with the release of the Amazon Kindle Ebook Reader.

Whether you provide products or services, add e-books to your offerings. Write them once and sell them multiple times to create a passive stream of income. They also build your voice and position you as an expert in your industry.

Come join bestselling eBook and traditionally published author Julie A. Fast and learn how you can tap into this new publishing opportunity. This class will cover the ins and outs of eBook publishing as well as recording books as mp3 files and publishing on the Iphone.

Julie A. Fast is one of the top mental health writers in the world with over 1,000,000 books sold and counting! Julie is an author, speaker, radio host and publishing consultant. Her books include Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder, Take Charge of Bipolar Disorder, Get it Done When You're Depressed and The Official Geezer Guide to Creating and Selling Ebooks. Julie was a pioneer in the eBook industry and watches with fascination as the publishing world changes from print to electronic products. She believes that writers will soon record books directly to audio media and ultimately focus on electronic self publishing with self hired PR agents instead of only working with large publishing companies.

Julie teaches classes on Electronic Media and works with authors who want to write eArticles and bestselling books. You can read more about her work at www.juliefast.com.

iPad Design and User Experience -- Mobile Portland
PIE: Portland Incubator Experiment

Before the iPad launched, we convened a panel of experts to help examine what the iPad would mean for businesses, entrepreneurs and developers. The panel was a hit and the conversation continued into the evening.

By popular demand, we're bringing James Keller, one of the panelists, back to talk about what we got right and what we got wrong when it comes to the iPad. Accompanying James will be Darin Richardson from Refresh Media.

Together, they will focus on the most compelling and interesting aspect of the iPad: the way we interact with the device.

We'll examine how the iPad's user interface design works, what we've learned from Apple's own applications, and how other applications are taking advantage of the form factor.

About James and Darin

James Keller is a digital communications strategist and user experience evangelist at Small Society, a small agency based in Portland with a passion for the iPhone™ platform, dedicated to helping organizations bring great ideas to life. Before joining the Small Society team, James was at Wieden+Kennedy helping the Portland office align client business goals and brand experiences with emerging technologies.

Leveraging her extensive knowledge of interaction design, business analysis, campaign analytics, and integrated marketing communications, she has led multiple teams in creating efficient and effective online strategies for top brands such as Coca-Cola, NIKE, Procter & Gamble, Levi’s, LAIKA Studio, Zipcar, and the MTV Networks.

She can frequently be seen at conferences speaking on topics such as information architecture, social media, and convergent culture.

Darin Richardson, Refresh Media

Darin Richardson is a partner in Refresh Media, a small studio that focuses marrying beautiful interface design with smart technology. He concentrates on information architecture, interaction design, and front-end coding to make his clients' projects shine. Before Refresh, Darin earned his chops at software and design firms in California.

Darin is obsessive about the details, refrains from talking endlessly about CSS 3 properties (unless you ask), and always enjoys a good hike in the Cascades armed with his trusty Nikon D90.

Mobile Portland: Ambient Location Apps and Geoloqi
Cloudability

Named by JWT Intelligence as one of the 100 things to watch in 2011, Portland's Geoloqi has garnered national attention for being at the forefront of location-based services. Forbes recently asked if Geoloqi was "Foursquare's Biggest Threat?"

Why is there so much buzz for this small project in Portland? Because Geoloqi is on the cutting edge of taking location information and making it truly useful.

As Aaron Parecki, one of the co-founders of Geoloqi, explained to Forbes, "I’d like to share my location with a client if I’m meeting them somewhere, so they can know when I’ll arrive."

We're honored to have Aaron Parecki and Amber Case as our first presenters of 2011. They'll be talking about the next generation of location apps and the importance of ambient location services.

Presentation Description

Wouldn't it be nice if your colleague's phone could SMS its location to you? If you know position and velocity, you know when they'll arrive. The result: the interface disappears. No redundant actions or queries. The same software could turn your lights on as you approach the house. Or automatically "check in" to certain locations for you. Or leave a note for yourself the next time you're at the store.

Augmented reality and location were hot topics last year, but there is often a confusion between aesthetics vs. practicality, and fantasy vs. reality. This presentation will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of visual and non-visual augmented reality.

In the presentation, they will highlight why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in the future, why social apps should try to mirror real-world relationships, why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you’re sharing, and why developers should think about how to make apps "ambient” and require less user interaction.

They will cover the current players in the geolocation market, the location market itself, and why location is such a big deal. They will discuss real-time location sharing, geolocation triggers such as geonotes, proximal notification and automatic checkins, and privacy and security.

What Will Be Covered

  • The location market. Where it is now and future projections.
  • Why the market is here (timing, hardware, affordability, etc.).
  • Some history (PARC research, etc.)
  • The current players: What they’re doing and where they fall short
  • What we’re passionate about and are trying to solve.
  • Philosophy of interface evaporation.
  • (Other cool things you can do with ambient location and sensors (fun home automation tricks and pranks).

Aaron Parecki

Aaron Parecki is a Portland-based iPhone and PHP developer interested in solving practical problems with technology. In his free time, he enjoys geolocation, linguistics, and building home automation systems and IRC bots with a sense of humor.

For the past 2.5 years, he has been tracking and visualizing his location every 6 seconds, making him a frequent presenter at the Portland data visualization group. His fascination with location sharing and GPS began at the age of 6, when he traced the routes of family road trips on a map with a highlighter. He combined these interests and created Geoloqi.com with Amber Case in an effort to help people connect in the real world.

Aaron has 11 years experience in web app development, database design, graphic design and printing, and server administration. You can learn more about Aaron at aaronparecki.com, and you can follow him on twitter at @aaronpk.

Amber Case

Amber Case is a cyborg anthropologist and user experience designer from Portland, Oregon. Her main focus is mobile software, augmented reality and data visualization, as these reduce the amount of time and space it takes for people to connect with information. Case founded Geoloqi.com, a private location sharing application, out of a frustration with existing social protocols around text messaging and wayfinding.

Last year, Case was featured in Fast Company as one of their Most Influential Women in Technology and spoke at TED on technology and humans. She worked with Fortune 500 companies at Wieden+Kennedy and now works as a user experience designer at Vertigo Software in Portland, Oregon.

You can learn more about Case at caseorganic.com, cyborganthropology.com and on Twitter at @caseorganic.

Portland Java User Group: Using GWT to write iPhone web apps in Java
Oracle (Downtown Campus)

This month's topic: Using GWT to write iPhone web apps in Java

For the Java coder, GWT is currently as close as it gets to a multi-platform solution for web apps. After a quick GWT review, we will code about in the world of web apps you can run on your desktop and mobile phone, written in Java. This will be a superview presentation touching on GWT, GWT mobile libs and HTML5.

Speaker: Jon Batcheller

Jon is one of the founders of PJUG, writing Java apps since 1995. He has written Java programs for a wide variety of applications from IC Design, circuit board layout, hardware/software co-design, assisted living facilit management, to a POS system for the two bars he owns.

PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)

Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't have to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!

Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building).

Intro to Native iOS Development Workshop
Thetus Corporation

Thanks to Aubri and Thetus Corporation we have a space for the next meeting. I'll lead a casual hands on workshop/class and we will cover

  • Introductions
  • Overview of native iOS development
  • Intro to Objective-C and Xcode
  • Walk through a simple "Hello World" style app

Feel free to bring a Mac laptop with Xcode 5 installed if you'd like to follow along or want to ask questions afterwards. We'll be using Xcode 5 and iOS 7.

I've created a resources page with info that may help you get started developing for iOS. You can check it out at http://e-string.com/resources/

It particular, you may want to take a look at the first few resources from Apple and download and install Xcode before Monday.

Thanks.

Julio

PDX IOS music meetup first meeting
Lucky Labrador Beer Hall

Well, you have to start somewhere. . .

We have no agenda to start with but I will have both my iPad, iPhone, Novation Launchkey 25, and some cans. I also have over 70 (I almost wish I had not counted them) IOS music apps, not that I'm an expert or even useful in most of them. Most notable in the missing category is Cubasis, just waiting for it to go on sale again.

PDX CocoaHeads - Xcode, help me fix my app's memory problems! w/ Ryan Arana
Dexcom

With ARC and Swift, memory management isn't nearly as difficult as it used to be, but I think every app developer has bumped up against problems with memory management at some point in their career, whether that shows up as crashes or poor performance or just plain weirdness at run-time. This month I'll go over a few tips 'n' tricks I've collected over the years about how to find and fix problems which stem from the mismanagement of memory using the tools built-in to Xcode and Instruments.

Hope to see you there!
Ryan

PDX CocoaHeads - Office Hours / Code Night / Q & A
Dexcom

Bring a project you've been working on and want some feedback on, or a problem you've been struggling with and need help on, or maybe you've got something you'd like to pair with somebody on, or just something you want to show off. We'll have people there with a mix of experience levels and knowledge about all kinds of different technologies and aspects of our field. So, whether you want to be there to help answer questions and share your experience, or reap the benefits of other's experience the goal is to create a space to just make some progress on something, whether it's your project or someone else's!

As usual there will be plenty of opportunity for just networking and catching up time if you don't have a specific project or anything, please do come, we'd love to just talk shop with you too.

Also, thanks to Jay for prompting this idea! If you're available for it he's doing an Ask a Dev tomorrow afternoon (3/8) at Palio, check it out: https://www.meetup.com/Ask-A-Dev/events/248354898/

PDX CocoaHeads - Swift Codable w/ Mattt
Dexcom

Codable is a new feature in Swift 4 that dramatically improves the process of converting between objects and their representations. Join us as Mattt (@mattt) shows us how to take advantage of Codable in our own projects, and shares interesting tidbits about the feature's history, underlying implementation, and how its performance stacks up against the alternatives.

Show up around 6:30 for networking and the like. The presentation will begin at 7.
