AgilePDX: Virtual Pub Lunch on Hiring - What qualities do you hire for?
Virtual zoom location

Ever struggled to get to a downtown or West side location to join a lunch discussion? Then a virtual "pub lunch" may be the answer!

This agile lunch discussion is a collaborate effort between Seattle and Portland agile minds, and we're hoping it won't stop there. The event is held on a zoom conference line. It is modeled after the AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch, which is an open round table with discussion topics sourced from the participants. Towards the end of each lunch discussion we will ask for topic suggestions and vote which one to pick for our next meeting. And we'll close out the discussion with a quick review feedback - so we can learn what works and what doesn't.

For this kick-off meeting, we will borrow the AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch topic about Hiring: What qualities do you hire for? Technical skills, learning attitude, team fit, emotional intelligence,... and to what extent does your search focus on building team diversity? These questions are only the beginning.

Join us in this new experiment and connect with the greater community of the Pacific Northwest. Visit our meetup page to RSVP and get the zoom conferencing information: https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/252496023/

Junior Tech Talent + Startup Hiring Event
WeWork - Custom House

This is a FREE event. This is not your typical job fair. No booths, no resumes, just personal connections with like-minded people. Each company has one-minute to pitch to job seekers (who you are and what you're hiring for) Each candidate has one-minute to pitch to companies (who you are, what you're excited to bring to the table, what you're hoping to get out of your next role, why companies should hire you)

We will have a lineup of vetted talent consisting of junior developers and college students with technical and non-technical backgrounds. Candidates are seeking internships/apprenticeships, project-based work and entry-level positions. Companies consist of startups and emerging and high-growth tech companies.

The format for this event was designed with a few things in mind: minimized risk, cost, and time for the founder; pre-vetted, talented folks who were prepared and ready to pitch to companies; a safe, fun environment for job seekers to learn about the startup community and learn what it takes to be a sought after employee.

Hiring Startup Teams - Interactive Workshop for Founders and Hiring Teams of (esp. early stage) startup teams
Concourse Coffee

Topics we'll cover:

🙋🏿‍♂️ Values and Culture-Alignment

🔦 Find Startup-specific Talent

👩🏻‍🏫 Recruiting 101

👷🏾‍♀️ Building a Hiring Process

🕵🏻‍♂️ Scoping Needs + Roles

Hiring is often the hardest things leaders need to do. And is also the most critical as people are the most important and differentiating part of our companies.

We often hear "we want that startup-gene", or "the intangibles" and have built this workshop towards building out an understanding and concrete language for identifying these target ideal candidate profiles, esp. leaning into the soft skill and value/impact/motivation alignment match. As we all know, the only thing we know for sure in these early hires is that their role will change over the coming months - so we need to be sure we're not over indexing towards hard skills that won't be as important later.

This workshop will be interactive as participants feel comfortable, and the goal is to learn from the facilitating team (at Hustle Hunters), each other, and especially ourselves during this session.

In terms of what to expect - There will be a mix of knowledge sharing and best practices from the facilitating team, small group discussions, and self-reflection work.

Who should attend?:

Anyone who is hiring and building out a critical team within a startup (or scale-up) where the stakes are high, and so often the only thing we "know" is that everything in their role will change over the coming months. So we need to make sure we're defining and hiring folks with a builders and owners mentality, that are values-aligned with our organizations. Even if you've hired before - we'll dig into your unique organization's values and needs to help create a repeatable framework and shared language for making consistently aligned hires that will become the foundation of your organization.

Who is leading this workshop?

Nikki Adamson (Founder, CEO of Hustle Hunters) will be facilitating this discussion, and bringing in her experience supporting dozens of founders as they go about their critical early stage hires. Hustle Hunters is a human-focused recruiting and consulting form that supports early stage startups in building out their foundational teams with an emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
