PDXPUG: Lessons from managing way too many databases at Facebook
Free Geek

Rob Wultsch, a recent addition to Facebook's Database Operations team, will compare and contrast the Facebook deployment with his previous work with another large deployment of open source databases. In this db-agnostic talk, he'll go over: the bizarre becoming ordinary, the many types of infrastructure that do not scale and what does and does not work when building a DBA team.

Before joining Facebook, Rob worked for a very large hosting company as a database administrator and a newspaper as a web developer. In his free time he enjoys riding his motorcycle and bicycle and fantasizes about moving to Portland.

As always, beer afterwards at the Lucky Lab. See you there!

Controlling Your Online Privacy
Northwest Academy

Join us this month for two awesome presentations about online privacy!

First, Gizmodo's Kashmir Hill will join us remotely and share some Internet of Things stories, like the time she was able to control the lights in a stranger's house in another state, and how Amazon includes all Echo owners into a random social network.

Then IT consultant and technical author Russell Mickler will walk us through the various privacy settings in Facebook so we can better control what we share with our contacts and only share the things we actually want to share.

Program:

6:00 PM - Doors

6:30 PM - Kashmir Hill

7:00 PM - Russell Mickler

7:30 PM - Wrap up / networking

We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking following the talks. We hope to see you there!

Learn About a Successful Meetup, YouTube, and Social Media content?
Portland Community Church

In this session, I’ll share how to market and run a Meetup; we've been running one the past two years.

I’ll share how to run a YouTube channel we've been running the past year. I’ve been able to include the Meetup as part of the YouTube Channel.

I’ll provide you with some ideas on how to share your content online by using filmmaking techniques. I have examples of how to create a story with script writing, filming, and editing with Final Cut Pro. I’ll bring my gimbal and 360 camera we use for Facebook Live. We also use Zoom for our conferencing, desktop sharing, and recording needs.

Lastly, I share a social media strategy on how to tag and post on platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Meetup.
