TiE Oregon - Pitch Club

Why Participate? Pitch Club is an event where entrepreneurs learn the criteria and methods used by real investors to evaluate their venture as a potential investment. This is done by recreating a typical investor meeting where a few companies pitch and receive feedback from TiE Oregon Charter Members. These meetings follow the same basic agenda of an investor meeting with three sections: the pitch, Q&A, and investor discussion & decision.

Who facilitates Pitch Club? Pitch Club is organized by Kari Naone, TiE Oregon Executive Director and led by Tom Kingsley, a TiE Charter Member who is an investor and successful entrepreneur.

What to expect? Please minimally prepare for a 5-minute pitch. If time permits each person could get up to 10 minutes so be prepared for that as well. This can include a slides/ppt that will be presented from your computer. Directly after pitching, Q&A and discussion will take place.

Those who attend pitch club will walk away with a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investor will ask. In addition, each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch and feedback from their peers and TiE Charter Members.

Indie.vc v 3.0 - Winter Tour 2019

Over the last few years, we’ve had the chance to host many events that expose founders to an alternative universe where companies they’ve been told can’t be built without massive amounts of VC funding are thriving with little, to no, outside investment. We often start these events by warning attendees that they won’t be able to unsee what they’re about to see. Many leave these events with a whole new perspective on not only what is possible, but why limiting exposure the traditional venture business model is beneficial for founders, employees and the cultures and values they’re hoping to embody with their businesses.

Rather than write another blog post or clever FAQ, we wanted to bring that same in-person experience to those considering investment from Indie.vc.

Over the next 2 months, we’ll be embarking on a tour of most major metros in the US (we tried picking towns that were a short-ish road trip away from just about anywhere). Our goal with these info sessions is to share our experiences and motives directly with the Indie-curious. They are open to founders interested in taking investment from Indie.vc and Angels/Funds interested in funding companies the way we do. We’re planning to have some founders we’ve backed, and founders who’ve built and scaled profitable businesses, join us for these events to answer questions and share their experiences embracing the values and tactics we preach.

Legal Innovation & Technology Meetup with International #NewLaw Leaders Cat Moon, Jeena Cho, & Alix Devendra

I'm very excited to announce an impromptu May 8 Meetup with three internationally recognized leaders in the NewLaw and LegalTech movements: Cat Moon, Jeena Cho, and Portland's own Alexandra Devendra! 

These forward-looking lawyers will lead a panel discussion ranging from hot topics like the blockchain and AI in legal, to less buzzworthy (but perhaps more important) concepts like what legal teams can learn from the ResponsiveOrg and Holocracy movements, why a meditation practice can help you deliver better client value (and how to start one), how to innovate using the tools of design professionals, and why diversity is the key to achieving better outcomes.

Cat Moon (@inspiredcat) teaches legal design thinking and agile project management at Vanderbilt Law School, her alma mater. She is a contributor to the ABA’s Legal Technology Today blog and writes there and elsewhere about legal technology, blockchain, kanban and agile project management, design thinking, diversity/inclusion in the law, and work/life alignment. Cat also is co-founder, COO and CDO of Legal Alignment, a legal tech startup developing an AI-powered, interoperable platform for legal workflow and project management. She just wrapped up an international conference on Blockchain in the Law and the first Music City Legal Hackathon

Jeena Cho (@jeena_cho) is the co-author of The Anxious Lawyer, An 8-Week Guide to a Joyful and Satisfying Law Practice Through Mindfulness and Meditation (ABA). She is a regular contributor to Forbes, Bloomberg and Above the Law where she covers resilience, work/life integration, and wellness in the workplace. She regularly speaks on women's issues, diversity, wellness, productivity, mindfulness and meditation. She also co-founded Shape The Law, an unconference for lawyers, with Alix Devendra and Mary Redzic.

Alix Devendra (@alixdevendra) is an attorney and legal design consultant based here in Portland. She helps lawyers make their work product more effective using typography and other principles of visual communication design. She is the co-author (with Cat Moon) of the forthcoming Designing Your Practice: A Design Thinking Approach to Legal Services. Alix also consults for legal-tech startups, who value her experience in both law practice and design thinking. She travels internationally to speak and facilitate workshops on legal design.


We'll be at a new location this time, BackPedal Brewing at NW 15th and Flanders. They are opening especially for us and their (excellent) beer will be on tap--please plan to support them!

Why Participate? Pitch Club is an event where entrepreneurs learn the criteria and methods used by real investors to evaluate their venture as a potential investment. This is done by recreating a typical investor meeting where a few companies pitch and receive feedback from TiE Oregon Charter Members. In 54 hours, participants share ideas, form teams, build products and launch education ventures. Startup Weekend EDU begins with open-mic, 60-second pitches Friday night that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable concepts. Teams spend Saturday and Sunday morning focusing on customer development, validating their ideas and building prototypes with the help of experienced coaches. On Sunday afternoon, teams demo their education solutions and receive valuable feedback from a panel of expert judges. All of the pitches on Friday and companies demoed on Sunday will be educator approved and designed to solve problems in the education space, broadly defined (not restricted to K-12 or other “formal” education).

At the basis of the transition from something that is a cool idea to an actual business, lies the question: what is the market for my intended product or service?

The answer to that question is many-faceted. What is the exact problem that you're addressing? Is the time right for your idea? Is the state of technology ready for your envisioned solution? Who are your intended customers and what do they look like? How many of them are there in your intended market area? How many are currently in the market for what you have to sell? And between you and your competition, how many will want to buy your solution instead of someone else's?

All of this is not an exact science - but the more realistic your estimates, the better your chances of gauging your chance of success, and the more credible you will be to a potential investor.

When you are pitching to investors, they will want to know whether they can trust you with their money: inevitably you're going to get to the question of what the financial projections for your business are. When are you going to make money and how much?

One thing that will be 100% certain about your numbers: they will be wrong.

However, what is actually more important, is how you arrived at those numbers. Investors will be more interested in hearing what assumptions you made about the number of customers you are expecting to get, how much it costs to sell to them, what the costs are of producing your product or services, how much staff you will need, etc. etc. You have to demonstrate that you know your market, your abilities and the things you will need to make your vision a profitable reality.

For some entrepreneurs, this is a really daunting topic. However, you must be able to understand your business and the numbers behind it, before you can convince anyone else to come along for the ride.

Join us for TiE Oregon Pitch Club where our July speaker, Ana Andueza, will shed light on how to construct your financial model.

As a CFO as well as an angel investor, Ana has broad experience in dealing with startups and finances.

…at the University of Oregon, Keeley and Erika were in their college apartment, scraping the bottom of yet another empty jar of peanut butter. As hungry college students and athletes, they ate a lot of peanut butter, and on this occasion, neither of them felt like biking to the store in the rain to buy more. So, they decided to try making their own! That day, Wild Friends was born.

More than four years have passed since the day they made that first jar. They’ve left their college apartment behind and are now based in Portland, Oregon. They’ve launched dozens of new flavors of nut butter and sell in thousands of stores across the country.

However, despite all these changes, a few things have stayed the same — most importantly, their passion for awesome tasting products, made with the healthiest whole ingredients they can find.

Stephen’s current entrepreneurial roles include a contractor for Nike, providing strategy assistance to small business owners & co-founder of the nation’s first nonprofit brewpub & brewery (Oregon Public House) which in its third year in operation is poised to break the $1M revenue mark and will be opening its second location in 2017. He currently sits on the board of directors for six area nonprofits that are all based in N/NE Portland that support economic development, community development & education. He is the past board-chair for the Black United Fund of Oregon is the current Treasurer at the Oregon Public House. He is a Portland area native and graduated with a BS degree in economics from Western Oregon University.

OEN’s new Coaching Program is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to share their goals, challenges, insights, and advice in an intimate and confidential setting. Limited to 15 participants, this Program is supported by a certified Coach and a network of mentors with expertise in various topics. Participants will meet monthly for a period of six months, though we expect the connections you make will endure long after the program ends.

Coaching and leadership development can often be inaccessible for entrepreneurs at this stage, which is why OEN is partnering with Geffen Mesher, one of Portland’s local accounting firms, and Industrious, Portland’s newest co-working space, to pilot this coaching experience. Participants will be assigned a small group of partners within their cohort to connect with between sessions to tackle pressing and emerging issues. All participants will be able to contact everyone in the cohort and all the mentors on an ongoing basis.

Entrepreneurship is hard, but it’s much harder if you try to go it alone. You need the support of other founders and startup executives who can “feel your pain” and help you solve real-life problems in real time. You also need experienced mentors who can help guide you on your path.

Eligibility: Founders and/or leaders of companies currently experiencing significant growth who want to learn how to scale up their business from an experienced coach, a peer cohort, and a network of mentors/experts in various fields. This is the perfect “next step” after our Startup Series.

Program: This six-month pilot program will kick off with a half-day session with subsequent sessions running for three hours. Participants will be also be matched up with a small Pod cohort to discuss emerging issues, homework, and other matters as they arise in between monthly meetings.

Given that many startups face similar challenges, we have curated a group of mentors, each with expertise on topics relevant to leaders of companies at this stage, including legal, accounting, sales, marketing, leadership, finance/fundraising, and more. These mentors have agreed to provide advice and support to the participants for the duration of the program. They will attend the first and last session and may appear as guest speakers when appropriate.

Prior to the first session, participants will be invited to take the Clifton Strengthsfinder Assessment to identify their Top 5 Strengths so that over the course of the Program, participants can expand their effectiveness, learn to leverage others’ strengths, and extend the collective strengths of their team.

The format of the monthly meeting will have one mentor present for the first 1-1.5 hours with a facilitated group discussion to follow. The discussion will be customized to the specific needs of the participants.

Topics: Topics will focus on issues the group identifies, but we expect to include:

Hello LIT-Lab PDX!

We're on track for our next Meetup on Tuesday June 20, when we'll be returning to the Jaguar Land Rover incubator for a very special presentation from Amber Hollister, General Counsel of the Oregon State Bar. 

Among other things, Amber provides ethics assistance to Oregon lawyers and others servicing the legal needs of Oregonians. More recently, she has spent the past several months as the Bar's primary contact to the Regulatory Committee of the Futures Task Force of the Bar (the sister committee to the Innovation Task Force that we kicked off here at LIT-Lab back in the fall). 

Both committees of the Futures Task Force are in the process of finalizing their findings and recommendations to present to the Bar's Board of Governors later this month, and Amber and I will both give you all a preview of those recommendations. (Teaser: if adopted, the recommendations should put Oregon at the national forefront of innovative approaches to Access to Justice issues).

Then, Amber will spend a little time talking about the ethics of legal innovation more generally, including plenty of time to answer your questions.

Take yourself back to 1998, when the first websites were being built. What tool did they use? For many it was a tool like Dreamweaver: expensive, complex, on-premise software. Fast forward to 2018. What do people use now? Tools like Wordpress, Wix, Weebly and Shopify. These tools are cloud-based, pay-as-you-go, and simple yet powerful. Panelists:
Tobias Read is Oregon’s 29th state treasurer. He brings a wide range of public-sector and private-sector experience to the office. He worked for two U.S. Treasury secretaries, at the Nike Corporation and has most recently served as a state representative in Oregon for a decade. As state treasurer, Tobias’ first priority is to focus on managing Oregon’s money responsibly and with transparency. He received a bachelor’s degree from Willamette University before earning his MBA at the University of Washington.

Josh Harwood serves as the City Economist for the City of Portland, providing financial forecasts for city budgeting, as well as advising on a variety of city finance issues. Prior to joining the City in 2010, he worked for the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis and served as Chief Economist in the Colorado Governor's Office. Josh currently serves on the State Revenue Forecast Advisory Committee and Government Finance Officers Association’s Budget Committee. He has a bachelor’s degree from Willamette University and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Colorado.

Moderator:
Jim Coonan is a highly successful entrepreneur who has been deeply involved with Oregon’s entrepreneurial community, having previously served as chair of OEN and the Portland Angel Network, which led to the development of the Oregon Angel Fund. Jim also served as Director of Business Alliances for the Oregon University System and with Vice Chancellor Diane Vines was lead staff for the Economic Development Joint Boards Working Group, a collaboration between the state’s university system and the state’s Economic Development Commission. Portland Community Design Thinkers - Join a Team for IDEO.org'­s 9-Week Course for Human-Centered Design

In May, IDEO.org and +Acumen will once again be offering their highly regarded free 9-week online course, Design Kit: Course for Human-Centered Design. As we do regularly, Portland Community Design Thinkers will be hosting a special meetup on May 6, where we'll explain what the course is about and what you can expect from it. And for those interested in participating, we'll help you form teams of local colleagues with whom you can work, which we've found vastly improves both completion rates and the experience as a whole.

Created by IDEO.org for those who are relatively new to design thinking, +Acumen's free Design Kit: Course for Human-Centered Design is probably one of the best and most immersive resources anywhere for getting up to speed on the nuts and bolts of HCD. This meetup is specifically for those interested in learning more about the course and helping to form working teams. Please note PCDT is not managing this course -- you'll be on your own for that. But we're keen to give anyone interested a leg up in getting off to the best possible start with a group of other eager local participants, and you're welcome to use our own Slack channel for course communication and organizing, as many groups have previously done.

In brief, it's a nine-week online FREE curriculum that will introduce participants to the concepts of human-centered design and how this approach can be used to create innovative, effective, and sustainable solutions.

(You'll also have a choice to craft your own challenge.) Each week you will explore the fundamental concepts through readings, case studies, and short videos. Portland Community Design Thinkers - Parenting in the Age of Digital Technology: A Humane Tech Meetup

In January, Portland Community Design Thinkers gathered to examine how mobile devices and apps are designed to hijack our attention in ways that are not aligned with users’ best interests but, rather, mainly with the interests of advertisers. In that session, we explored how “engagement,” the chief currency of Silicon Valley, has become inextricably linked with the hidden design practices that prioritize user time on platform above all other considerations.

Managing our own ability to ignore these digital distractions is difficult enough; but it becomes vastly more difficult when we must do so for our children as well, who are growing up in a world in which these device mediate nearly every aspect of their social, psychological (and, increasingly, their educational) lives. How do parents and families take back control of their homes -- and their children's futures -- from the Silicon Valley tech giants whose primary concern is maximizing "time on platform" and delivering users' eyeballs to advertisers? There is so much at stake. Cyber bullying, inappropriate texts, social anxiety, depression, ubiquitous porn, and screen addictions are just a few of the issues that might affect our children.

There are certainly benefits to using mobile devices. But how can parents and young children assure they remain the masters of these devices rather than servants to them? How do parents assure they are leading by example to create tech-healthy families?

On May 21, we'll reconvene to consider just these questions. We'll be joined by two Portland subject matter experts, both of whom provide counseling, workshops and proven strategies for parents to help children manage screen time and find balance in the digital age.

Richard Halpern is a Portland-based Parent Educator and Counselor, and the founder of Coach4Parents, providing workshops and parenting strategy sessions to help manage screen time, and to reduce screen dependence, for kids of all ages.

Andrea Davis and her husband, Tyler, are the parents of five kids. Together, they've created BetterScreenTime, a resource for any parent who believes screen time can be a positive experience and who wants to prepare their children for that privilege in the best way possible. It’s for the parent who knows screen time will never be perfect, but believes it can be better.

Wasted food comes at an enormous financial and environmental cost. In the US, food is the largest single source of waste.

  • 40% of all food never makes it to the table. That's about 20 lbs per person per month at a cost of $165 billion each year.
  • 30% of all food, worth $48 billion, is thrown away annually.
  • Food production accounts for approx. 16% of energy use, 50% of land, and 80% of freshwater consumed.

We're bringing together local experts to discuss how they are fighting wasted food by working with farmers, distributors, and foodservice providers. Learn about the creativity, complexity, and technology involved in their solutions as well as opportunities to continue to address waste in our food systems.

  • Claire Cummings is the Waste Guru at Bon Appétit Management Co which provides full-service restaurant management and operates over 650 cafes. Claire manages the Imperfectly Delicious Produce program which works with farmers, distributors, and chefs to save cosmetically challenged produce from going to waste.
  • Brennan Hogan is a Marketing Manager at LeanPath which provides automated food waste prevention solutions for operators of all sizes. LeanPath was founded in 2004 by a team of Portland-based entrepreneurs and enables clients to cut kitchen food waste by 50% or more and up to 6% on food costs.

ABOUT ONEAPP OREGON OneApp Oregon was started out of necessity. Tyrone Poole, Founder and CEO, was training to become a firefighter when he suffered a gruesome injury that hospitalized him. With no insurance or income, Tyrone's bills piled up and by the time he was released from the hospital he was broke and homeless. Tyrone took shelter in the YWCA, where he made it his mission to help people find housing. In his time helping people, one thing became very clear: application fees and the uncertainty of applying to properties were crippling. Application fees can cost upwards of $50, and there's no way for an applicant to know whether they meet the property's criteria. From this realization, an idea was born: one application, one application fee, transparency to all properties. OneApp Oregon was born.

Allie Magyar recognized the need for software like Hubb in the event space from her firsthand experience as an event manager. She felt so passionate about her idea that she used her own capital to build the product. Microsoft, believe it or not, was her first paying customer.

As more customers started using Hubb, Allie got to a point where she needed to scale the business. So, she went out and raised some money. Although…she didn’t just raise some money. In typical Allie fashion, she raised the most money that year for a seed-stage company.

"In 60 seconds, I knew I wanted to talk to Allie Magyar about her business idea after I saw her pitch at an event. I handed her my card, and we took a meeting the next day," said Nitin Rai, President of Elevate Capital and Chairman of TiE Oregon Angles.

In 2020, Allie sat down and talked with us regarding her journey thus far. We are excited now again to hear from Allie as she walks us through the last two years of her entrepreneurial journey including the successful exit to Intrado Digital Media, now Intrado.

Bottleneck: Getting connected more efficiently

What if once a month, one of us agreed to block a couple of hours for a series of 10 minute meetings with folks who have been trying to get on your calendar?

I know, crazy right? No wait. There’s more. What if this block of meetings occurred at a coffee shop or maybe even a bar?

Still with me? Because here’s where it gets wacky.

What if we all showed up at that same place those meetings were happening? Because we were invited. Not because it was random or something. And we invited other community members to hang out there too, like a happy hour. Then we ask the folks having meetings to do their homework to make the meeting efficient, to show up early for their meeting time, and to stay late so they get to meet more people — and get connected more quickly. It might even be that in the middle of one of our 10 min meetings, we could just point at someone in the crowd and be like “That’s the person you need to talk to, right there.”

In my head, I’ve been calling the “Bottleneck.” Because that’s what I am. And that’s what I’m trying to solve for. And I thought it might be a solution that could work for you. And our community. And I’m down to beta test it as the meeting-haver if a few of you are willing to join me as the happy hour-ers.

When: First pitch will be at 6pm with doors opening at 5:30pm and everyone out by 7:30pm

How: Six entrepreneurs will get five minutes to pitch to the audience and then three minutes of questions about their idea. After the last pitcher has answered questions from the audience, attendees will then vote for the three winners who split the prize money equally.

Who: This event is organized in collaboration with Juan Barraza one of the founding members of Latino Founders @Latino_Founders , Edgar Navas CEO of Cliqa both of them organizers of PDX Startup Weekend Latino @pdxswlatino and Fabio Valentino founder of Latinx Tech PDX.

We're all faced with the challenge of creating an awesome software product for our customers. A big part of this is having a highly functional software development team.  

In this Meetup we'll discuss:

• When to develop software in-house versus outsourcing or partnering with another software platform. Some SaaS companies utilize a mix of in-house and outsourced developers. We'll brainstorm various possible approaches.

• How do you train new developers?  What approaches have been successful and what has been a dismal failure? - Does it make sense to hire senior developers only or a mix of junior and senior developers?

• Team / project organization - Do you do daily standups? How do your organize sprints? How are deadlines established and by whom? Is your team in the same office or are some remote? What tools do you use (Slack, Trello, etc.)? With all of the bugs, feature requests, UI overhauls, when do you ship updates to the product?

• Communication and transparency - How do you speak to the rest of the team in a language everyone understands? Do you hold weekly/bi-weekly meetings to announce progress? How do you showcase new features to clients?
