Dispatches from the Data Frontier: Hack Oregon Demo Night!!
Empirical Theater at OMSI

DEMO DAY 2016

Hack Oregon has been hard at work since February using data to find insight on important topics facing our state. We've had over 100 volunteers contribute over 10,000 man hours to bring you one night of data-driven wonderment!

Join us as we unleash a new set of open data projects that will change the way you see Oregon.

Kindly RSVP on Eventbrite

"Oregon Hunger Equation"
Food Insecurity

Year after year, Oregon has one of the highest reported rates of food insecurity in the country. If you ask the question, "Who's hungry?":

The answer is kids.

The data is clear, but the reality is hard. We've made a dynamic program to explore systemic causes of hunger at home by placing a special focus on resources available to families with young children including regional cost of living, state benefit programs, and inequalities local schools districts.

"Behind the Curtain”
Campaign Finance

We're lifting the veil off election politics with a fascinating high-level view of influence and money in Oregon's election cycles.

Hack Oregon has the only machine readable database for local campaign finance in the country, and we've learned that influence is as much about relationships as it about dollars. And at the local level, your vote matters A LOT.

This year, we've added new meta-data to reveal effects of industry buy-in and individual patronage during an election cycle... with a few surprises. Unlock the real story behind politics and feel ultra-empowered as a voter this November.

“Plot PDX”
Urban Development

Data can tell us a lot about our neighborhoods. At a time when Portland is experiencing rapid growth and change, it's more important than ever that all communities have equal access to information that can inform decisions about the future of our city.

We're giving the community access to a range of data which has never been available on one platform. Explore Portland's neighborhoods as you've never seen them before, on topics that you care about, like demolitions, crime, and the rising cost of rent.

“Crop Compass"
Agriculture

In the Pacific Northwest, we live in one of the most rich biospheres in the world, with global demand for Oregon grown products. We have the ability to produce a wide range of food in Oregon, but we're far from self-sustaining.

How much of our regional vitality is retained inside of Oregon, and how much do we ship out? How do our economic and environmental factors work together to shape our food system? We've created a tool that gives insight into multi-dimensional patterns across land use, crop diversity, subsidies, seasonality, and import/export trends to help understand more about the mechanics of how food gets from farm to table.

"Programming to Progress"
Education

Across Oregon, some schools are lucky enough to have free or low-cost summer school programming and/or after school programming--- and the playing field is not level.

How much of a difference does after school and summer school programming make for early literacy, attendance, and future academic success of students? Hack Oregon has the first aggregate statewide analysis of the link between performance and expanded programming, with some surprising implications of region-wide impact that goes beyond the classroom.

Portland Elasticsearch Meetup: Jeff Bryner from Mozilla, Kibana 4 and Shield Preview
Jama South

Join us at Jama South for food, drink, and Elasticsearch discussion.

Our Guest Speaker: Jeff Bryner ( @0x7eff ) is a 20+year infosec veteran/addict. Speaker at 3 DEF CONs, 3 Bsides, and 1 RSA (but he didn't mean it), he stands accused of re-writing everything in python, integrating security tools into 3D worlds with kinectasploit and taunting the Demo Gods in every presentation.

His Presentation: Hackers have all the fun. With slick, integrated, real-time, open suites like metasploit, armitage, SET, and lair they quickly seek out targets, share exploits, gain footholds and usually win.

The time has come for defense to get the same capabilities in an open-source platform dedicated to defense and based on modern technology. To this end the operations security group at Mozilla has developed MozDef: The Mozilla Defense Platform to take on traditional SIEM functionality of event management, alerting and correlation and expand the real-time capabilities of the defender into automated defense and shared incident response.

This presentation will cover the MozDef platform, its use of Elasticsearch and it's SIEM capabilities with as much live demo as the gods will allow.

The rest of the Agenda:

We also plan on going deep on Kibana 4, the powerful new version of Kibana that takes advantage of the aggregations API in Elasticsearch. A rewrite from the ground up, visualizations are now powered by D3js and provides an enhances workflow capability allowing you to Discover, Visualize and Dashboard your data for insights.

Shield is right around the corner and we will be giving an intro to it at the meetup. Learn how to enable access control, document level security, SSL and more!

We will also have a few Elasticsearch Solution Architects in town so its a great chance to get your questions answered by people that are in the field every day helping customers succeed with Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana (The ELK Stack).

Hope to see you all there!

Talking to media with Malia Spencer of Portland Business Journal
Online

We're honored to grab some time with the best startup journalist in Portland, if not the Northwest.

Please join us for a Q&A session with Malia Spencer, a Portland-based journalist who covers startups, venture capital, and technology for the Portland Business Journal.

Her career has ranged a variety of media, starting with traditional print journalism at daily newspapers. She began at a large metro then at a smaller daily paper on the California central coast. As the media landscape shifted, she finds herself with one foot still in traditional print and one firmly online.

At the Portland Business Journal we produce award-winning reporting in a weekly print edition as well as daily work online. I also edit out technology and entrepreneurs focused newsletter, TechFlash Portland.

Please RSVP and submit & upvote questions ahead of time: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/malia-spencer-portland-business-journal

Taptu Demo on Tap at Beer and Blog

First of all, thanks to all of you for enduring my cleverly-worded, extremely cheesy headlines. They give me such pleasure to think up, you see. So...thanks.

Next of all, it's time for Beer and Blog again! Whoo-hoo!

This time around Jason Harris (of techcraver.com fame, a most excellent tech blog) will be demoing Taptu a "super-fast entertainment search engine for your mobile."

(This is the part where you get my "tap" headline pun, shake your head, and chuckle "that silly, silly @mediaChick." It's okay, I'm used to it.)

Jason is the US Community Manager for Taptu, which enables media searching on your cell phone and SMS media link sharing with your friends. Intriguing, no? He'll be showing off his mobile search-and-share engine starting at 4pm, so all you mobile software rock stars should make plans accordingly.

Also, in case you haven't heard...Justin and Christine are outta town. In Vegas, again. Yep, left me with the keys to the castle, at the helm of the ship. Funny thing, though. All I can think about is who's going to buy me a beer at Beer and Blog. ;)

See you there, beer-and-bloggers!
