Annual Event Hosted by Oregon Blockchain: Outside the Block

This is Oregon Blockchain’s inaugural conference. It will be hosted in Portland, Oregon and aims to bring a wide range of unique industry perspectives together with students in a dynamic event, highlighting the future of the budding blockchain ecosystem in the Pacific Northwest. We will be hosting speakers from Intel, Microsoft, Public Market, and inviting students from the University of Washington, Arizona State University, Portland State University, Oregon State University, and UC Berkeley. Learn more about our moderator and panel: Moderator: Suzanne Abate is co-founder of The Development Factory and host of the famous 100 Product Managers Podcast. She is a product management expert, having taught numerous courses for General Assembly and coached enterprise organizations including AT&T, Target, Marriot, and Blue Shield. She has also helped dozens of startups launch and scale their ideas in market.

Panelists:

Shamir Karkal is co-founder and CEO of Sila, a simple, secure, and accessible suite of developer tools for building financial applications. At the heart of Sila is a new regulatory-compliant ERC-20 token which is pegged to the US dollar via a centralized 100% reserve held in US Treasuries. The Sila token will be used as the base for an API platform that will offer developers APIs such as ID Verification, Account Linking, ACH and Card in/out, and token transfers. Shamir has a unique take on FinTech product development, as he is a software engineer turned finance and banking expert who co-founded Simple and headed the Open Platform at BBVA.

Christian Maynard-Philipp Christian is the CCO and COO of Third Party Technologies, a FinTech that provides brokerage API services to digital Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), software, and trust companies. Prior to Third Party, Christian worked for Acorns, after Portland-based Vault Investments, a retirement-savings app, was acquired last year. Christian has also worked to innovate financial policy both locally and nationally and co-led the rollout of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Empowerment Innovation Fund. Christian is an honors graduate of George Mason University’s Master of Public Policy program and holds several financial licenses.

Benjamin Diggles is VP of Business Development at Constellation Labs, an unbounded Blockchain with microservices that are scalable and fault resistant with fast transactions.

Jeff Booth is a Canadian Entrepreneur, Technology Leader, Author, and Strategic Adviser. In January 2020, Jeff released his now famous book “The Price of Tomorrow – Why Deflation is Key to an Abundant Future”. In it, he offers his provocative thesis about the current state of our economies and what must happen to enable a brighter future. Since then, he's become well known in the Bitcoin world, making the podcast rounds and providing a fascinating perspective on the global financial system. Most recently, Jeff co-founded and is the general partner of ego death capital, a Bitcoin ecosystem venture fund.

Troy Cross is a Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Reed College where he teaches courses on the philosophy of religion, color, and the philosophy of mind, as well as lecturing in the humanities program. Prior to coming to Reed in 2010, he held positions at Yale and Merton College, Oxford. Troy's philosophical research interests center on foundational issues in metaphysics and epistemology, but has also been involved in bitcoin for over a decade, cultivating interest in a number of bitcoin-related issues in that time, most of all, the question of bitcoin mining’s present and future environmental impact.

The Socratic Seminar events are formatted to foster debate, information sharing, and lively discussion. Inspired by other Bitdevs around the country, this is an event for those interested in discussing and participating in the research and development of Bitcoin and related protocols.

We'll spend time discussing technical components: pull requests in the Bitcoin Core, lnd, network statistics, research papers, technical blog posts, and other relevant content.

To complete the meeting, members are free to present open-source projects, companies, research, and other relevant materials.

The Socratic Seminar events are formatted to foster debate, information sharing, and lively discussion. Inspired by other Bitdevs around the country, this is an event for those interested in discussing and participating in the research and development of Bitcoin and related protocols.


We'll spend the first portion of the event discussing technical components: pull requests in the Bitcoin Core, lnd, network statistics, research papers, technical blog posts, and other relevant content.


During the second portion, we will have a more broad-reaching educational discussion (generally in the form of a fireside chat or presentation), followed by feedback and Q&A.
To complete the meeting, members are free to present open-source projects, companies, research, and other relevant materials.
