21st Century Skills: Transformative Storytelling
Multnomah Arts Center

If you want to tell more engaging and compelling stories in the workplace and beyond, this 2-hour participatory class is for you.

Storytelling is in our DNA. We create stories everyday to make sense of our world. Stories shape our memories and relationships. Stories breathe life into our shared reality, and galvanize shared visions. A great story, well presented, can move mountains. We can develop this innate ability to tell stories that move others.

We'll explore storytelling as a spontaneous act of self-expression and sense-making. Then we'll practice telling stories collaboratively and individually, using interactive and improvisational techniques.

You get the opportunity to hone and improve a real-world story you bring to the workshop, coached by a seasoned interactive consultant and a professional improviser. This is a limited size class, and you will not be asked to "perform."

LIMITED DISCOUNT OFFER: Use promo code "Impro!" to purchase tickets at $20. Half off regular price!

Additional group and professional discounts available - contact Patricia via the website for details.

3D Modeling and Printing Workshop Series
Uncorked Studios

Sign up now, this event has a very limited number of spots! Registration for this event includes all three workshop sessions. You can register for the event via Eventbrite.

Come to ChickTech’s 3D Printing workshop to get the skills you need to start making 3D models on your own! For three Tuesday evenings in a row, you will be led by an experienced design instructor and focus on building a basic skill set for 3D printing design. Best of all, you'll get to print each session’s project in one of five plastic colors to keep!

Technology that will be used: Autodesk Fusion360 and 3D Printers

The Instructor: 3D printing designer Mazuir Ross (Maz) Maz sculpted the 3D printed cow Veronin for Urban Farmer PDX! To learn more about the designer check out her website at mazuirross.com. She is also in partnership with Attero, who focuses on the hardware side of 3D printing. You can find information about Maz and Attero’s operation at mazandattero.xyz.

Session 1, August 25th: Make a Custom Charm The first session will overview the basics needed for successfully designing 3D printing output, particularly FFF/FDM printing. In the lesson we will create a snap-on custom charm for beer bottles/wine glasses. The creation of the snap-on charm will focus on basics of sketching and creating geometry from sketches. You'll be able to put a word or name on the charm, or even make flowers and/or geometric shapes!

Session 2, September 1st: Make a Trinket Box The second session is about modeling a trinket box with a lid. The session will focus on the combining/subtracting and/or intersecting of geometry for modeling. We'll also focus on the concept of fitting tolerances needed for CAM/CNC fabrication, particularly 3D printing.

Session 3 September 8th: Make a Six-Panel Hinged Cube with Custom Panel Design In the third session, you'll model a 6-panel hinged cube, including learning how to create fitted hinges. You'll also get creative with the custom designs on each panel. This folding cube can be designed with a sports team logo, a company name, anything you want. It can also be made into a desk trinket to hold pencils/pens/stylus just by cutting out a hole on the top panel.

By the end of this workshop series you'll have a comprehensive understanding of 3D printing, 3D modeling software, and 3D design.

Part of ChickTech’s mission is to retain women in technology. We intend for this event to build community and add skills to resumes. We encourage anyone who has always wanted to get started with 3D Printing to register for this event!

Dates: Aug 25, Sept 1, Sept 8 Time: 5:45pm-8pm (Doors open at 5:30pm and close at 8:30pm, we encourage you to come early and stay late!)

Location:

Uncorked Studios 1001 SE Water Ave #350 Portland, OR 97214

Registration pays for dinner for all three evenings, along with the class costs. Any amount left over supports ChickTech: High School.

A big thank you to our sponsor and event location provider, Uncorked Studios!

Portland Community Design Thinkers - Join a Team for IDEO.org's 9-Week Course for Human-Centered Design
Portland

In May, IDEO.org and +Acumen will once again be offering their highly regarded free 9-week online course, Design Kit: Course for Human-Centered Design. As we do regularly, Portland Community Design Thinkers will be hosting a special meetup on May 6, where we'll explain what the course is about and what you can expect from it. And for those interested in participating, we'll help you form teams of local colleagues with whom you can work, which we've found vastly improves both completion rates and the experience as a whole.

Created by IDEO.org for those who are relatively new to design thinking, +Acumen's free Design Kit: Course for Human-Centered Design is probably one of the best and most immersive resources anywhere for getting up to speed on the nuts and bolts of HCD. This meetup is specifically for those interested in learning more about the course and helping to form working teams. Please note PCDT is not managing this course -- you'll be on your own for that. But we're keen to give anyone interested a leg up in getting off to the best possible start with a group of other eager local participants, and you're welcome to use our own Slack channel for course communication and organizing, as many groups have previously done.

Read more about the course at the below link.

In brief, it's a nine-week online FREE curriculum that will introduce participants to the concepts of human-centered design and how this approach can be used to create innovative, effective, and sustainable solutions.

During those nine weeks, you'll work online (and off) with a group of 2-6 people, learning the HCD process by applying it to one of three pre-crafted real world design challenges. (You'll also have a choice to craft your own challenge.) Each week you will explore the fundamental concepts through readings, case studies, and short videos. Then you'll meet in-person with your design team to get your hands dirty practicing the relevant human-centered design methods.

Let's get as many teams together as we can for the next course! Read more at this link: http://www.plusacumen.org/courses/introduction-human-centered-design

Portland Community Design Thinkers - Parenting in the Age of Digital Technology: A Humane Tech Meetup
Portland

In January, Portland Community Design Thinkers gathered to examine how mobile devices and apps are designed to hijack our attention in ways that are not aligned with users’ best interests but, rather, mainly with the interests of advertisers. In that session, we explored how “engagement,” the chief currency of Silicon Valley, has become inextricably linked with the hidden design practices that prioritize user time on platform above all other considerations.

Managing our own ability to ignore these digital distractions is difficult enough; but it becomes vastly more difficult when we must do so for our children as well, who are growing up in a world in which these device mediate nearly every aspect of their social, psychological (and, increasingly, their educational) lives. How do parents and families take back control of their homes -- and their children's futures -- from the Silicon Valley tech giants whose primary concern is maximizing "time on platform" and delivering users' eyeballs to advertisers? There is so much at stake. Cyber bullying, inappropriate texts, social anxiety, depression, ubiquitous porn, and screen addictions are just a few of the issues that might affect our children.

There are certainly benefits to using mobile devices. But how can parents and young children assure they remain the masters of these devices rather than servants to them? How do parents assure they are leading by example to create tech-healthy families?

On May 21, we'll reconvene to consider just these questions. We'll be joined by two Portland subject matter experts, both of whom provide counseling, workshops and proven strategies for parents to help children manage screen time and find balance in the digital age.

Richard Halpern is a Portland-based Parent Educator and Counselor, and the founder of Coach4Parents, providing workshops and parenting strategy sessions to help manage screen time, and to reduce screen dependence, for kids of all ages.

Andrea Davis and her husband, Tyler, are the parents of five kids. Together, they've created BetterScreenTime, a resource for any parent who believes screen time can be a positive experience and who wants to prepare their children for that privilege in the best way possible. It’s for the parent who knows screen time will never be perfect, but believes it can be better.

Join us on May 21 for an interactive discussion. As always, we'll have food and drink on hand from our sponsor, LUMA Institute, some door prize giveaways, and some networking and socializing time prior to and after the presentation.

Survey of Music Generation using Deep Learning w/ Jonathan Mackrory
The Tech Academy

== Slack == There is a #deep-learning channel in the PDX Startups slack which you can join at https://pdx-startups-slack.herokuapp.com

== Topic == Jonathan Mackrory will lead the discussion.

Music generation is one of the applications for deep learning where the emphasis is more on creativity than strict classification or regression. We'll have a presentation giving a quick survey of methods for music generation using deep learning. We'll have a whirlwind tour through representations of the music, important neural network architectures, some of the implementations, and hear some of the output. If we're lucky, some of it might even sound like music. We'll then wrap up with some open discussion about the topic.

The presentation will closely follow and be based on "Deep Learning Techniques for Music Generation - A Survey" by Briot, Hadjeres and Pachet. The article is available here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1709.01620 Note that the article is 108 pages, so there is little expectation anyone will read it. For those that want to look at the article, the essential material is in Ch 4,5,7,10.
