CHIFOO (Computer Human Interaction Forum of Oregon) - CHIFOO Event: Researching Smart + Spatial Computing
Connective DX

CHIFOO presents: Researching Smart + Spatial Computing with Hannah Scurfield!

Understanding how humans will react and engage with new and emerging platforms can be challenging, particularly with smart and spatial computing. These types of experiences often depart from existing mental models of human-machine interaction and are often tricky to prototype. Traditional behavioral research methods often become less effective, meaning researchers need to experiment with new ways to gather learning.

Using examples from research into mixed and augmented reality experiences, we will explore these hurdles and discuss techniques for gathering insights when existing research methods prove inadequate.

Join this session to hear about experimenting with user experience design research techniques and how people interact with augmented and mixed reality experiences.

About the Speaker

Hannah drives technology innovation by researching people, behaviors and culture. She works with design, development, product and business teams to help build products and experiences that people love. She has nearly 18 years’ experience in both research and design roles in the technology industry and an exciting 14 years spent working in the innovation labs of global technology leaders.

Her career has been focused on emerging platforms, from early mobile computing and the Internet of things to augmented and virtual reality experiences. A background in film, human-computer interaction and ergonomics prepared Hannah for experimenting with smart and spatial computing and her current passion: reimagining the traditional screen-based design research studio.

Hannah likes blank sheets of paper and big questions with no answers.

At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.

The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to JavaScript. JavaScript is universally recognized as a foundational language. It is present in every platform imaginable: like browsers, mobile, and desktop applications.

This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.

In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of these popular technologies - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.

Please Note:
---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.
---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.

The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to Web design with HTML & CSS. These languages are used to develop the structure and styling of every website.

Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Small Basic: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy
The Tech Academy

We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn."

At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.

The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to Small Basic. Small Basic is a Microsoft language that gives users exposure to many of the fundamental skills used in more complex coding languages.

This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.

Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Tech Talk: What's in the Box? A guided tour of a modern web application
The Tech Academy

Guest Speaker: Erik Gross, Co-founder of The Tech Academy

Today's modern web development tools give you a ton of code right out of the gate, making rapid application development possible. But it can be a challenge to understand what each part of your new, auto-generated app does, and how to modify the app as you make it solve the business need that drove its creation in the first place.

In this Tech Talk, Tech Academy co-founder Erik Gross will go over the essential principles of all web application frameworks, and then review how Microsoft's ASP.NET MVC implements those principles. You'll leave with a greater understanding of web app frameworks, how MVC works and how to modify it, and an approach to analyzing any pre-built framework you use in the future.

Here is what some past participants had to say about the free one-day courses.

I loved it. I love the explanations that the instructor gave. He was so patient and explained clearly.

It was great. The instructor gave us lots of information and helped us grow and foster new skills.

I was impressed by the organization and structure. Instructor was knowledgeable and kept the pace moving while taking extra time when necessary.

Portland Drupal! - Drupal Users Group Meeting
ThinkShout

NOTE: Updated address!

The new ThinkShout office is across the street - 321 NW Glisan St, Suite 700 - there will be someone in the lobby helping to buzz people in. As usual, we will have food and refreshments provided by the host.

On the second Wednesday of every month at a rotating location, come to the Portland Drupal User Group meetup to talk about Drupal and hear a few presentations.

These meetups are for ALL levels of Drupal users, from those of us who have only briefly heard of it but are interested in learning more to those of us who know a lot of but are always looking to learn more! Come get involved!

Check out the official Portland Drupal Users Group site at http://groups.drupal.org/portland . The site has more information about local Drupal meetups, events and opportunities.

Following the meetup, we will head to a nearby pub for socializing.

This month, we have a guest speaker, Evan Lovely (https://github.com/EvanLovely), the CTO of Basalt (http://basalt.io). Evan is the maintainer of the PHP version of PatternLab.

If you have heard of PatternLab, you know that it is the de facto standard for creating, sharing and distributing design patterns for front end applications. This should be an interesting session.

The first 30 minutes of the meetup will be socializing and dinner, followed by the two talks in whatever order they would like. If you are hiring or promoting an event, there will be a brief opportunity for announcements.
Our meetup rotates each month, so check groups.drupal.org and meetup.com for next month's event, and our social meetup, Brewpal.
FYI there is less than a month to go before session submissions (https://events.drupal.org/seattle2019/submit-session) close for DrupalCon Seattle, coming this spring. If you have never submitted before, now is a great time to talk to someone about your idea - we have several past speakers and track chairs who are happy to help you flesh out your idea.
