DESCRIPTION:PostgreSQL Users' Group monthly meeting. Followed by refresh

 enter: Tom Raney\, PSU&#13\;\nWhere: FreeGeek\, 1731 SE 10th Avenue\, Po
 rtland\, OR&#13\;\nWhen: 7pm\, September 18\, 2008&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTom Ra
ney will be presenting the Visual Planner\, a GUI tool written in Java t
hat enables the user to peek inside the PostgreSQL planner's decision ma
king process. The tool shows all plans that were evaluated including the
plan that was picked for execution. Tom worked on this during Google Su
mmer of Code\, and credits Dr. Len Shapiro\, a professor at Portland Sta
te University and PDXPUG regular\, as a great help.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTom s
howed off his tool during OSCON and has gotten some feedback from commun
ity members on it. He's working up a test example that should appeal to
DBAs\, and I'll link directly to the source code once he's got it ready.
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis work also involves a patch to PostgreSQL\, which sh
ould be available soon!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAfter the meeting\, retire to the
  Lucky Lab for refreshments!&#13\;\n\n\nTags: postgresql\, postgres\, sq

DESCRIPTION:speaker: David Wheeler&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSQL change man
agement is hard. Most “migration”-style implementations require opaque n
aming conventions\, prefer DSLs that cover a fraction of SQL\, and requi
re duplication of code for simple changes to existing functions. Such do
es not have to be. And now it’s not&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIntro
ducing Sqitch\, simple SQL change management that doesn’t suck. Sqitch d
oesn’t care what programming language your app is written in. It has no
opinions as to what database to use or what its schema should look like.
And it doesn’t require sequentially-named migration scripts or the use
of any DSL other than SQL. Sqitch lets you to write SQL migration script
s that target your database\, and provides a simple\, unintrusive interf
ace for specifying dependencies\, so that it can run things in the prope
r order.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSo come to this talk to learn al

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Gabrielle Roth &amp\; Michelle Franz&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nIn February\, long-term PDXPUGers Michelle Franz &amp\; Gabrielle Roth
return to discuss DBLINK and FDW\, two methods of accessing data that’s
outside your database. We’ll briefly mention SQL/MED on the way\, and te
ll a couple of bad (Dad) jokes.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe’ll cover use (and mis-
use) cases\, configuration of each\, and interesting quirks. Gabrielle w
ill attempt a live demo of file_fdw and postgres_fdw. You’re welcome to
follow along if you’d like\, just show up with a couple of Pg databases:
they can be on the same cluster (or container or RDS instance or what h
ave you) or different ones\, doesn’t really matter. One of them should h
ave at least one table with data in it.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the speaker
s:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFrom embedded systems to UI to relational database pro
gramming\, Michelle’s running an interesting path through the software w
orld. Working with databases is her current episode\, with some programm
ing\, some DBA\, some SysAdmin and a healthy dose of learning agile. She
’s very quickly come to appreciate and enjoy working with Postgres and h
er work has allowed her to learn from some super talented database exper
ts.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGabrielle has been using Postgres since sometime in t
he version 7s\, and thinks that the best part of using Open Source softw
are is the culture of sharing knowledge. She’s a Senior Data Engineer at
  NS1 and co-founder and former co-lead of PDXPUG.\n\nTags: postgres\, po

DESCRIPTION:Wesley Rolfson will be joining us to discuss Instrumentation.
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nData Instrumentation is the process of connecting things
like output (from sensors\, actions taken by a user\, or feedback from
a user action) and forming them into Events/messages which are then stor
ed/translated into data structures.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this Talk Wesley w
ill cover:&#13\;\n-What Data Instrumentation is&#13\;\n-How it is applie
d by organizations&#13\;\n-Where it fits in most data pipelines&#13\;\n-
What analytics should pay attention to&#13\;\n-What graphic interface/ p
roduct owners should consider&#13\;\n-Walkthrough 2 examples (website an
 d application)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJoin us Friday\, February 3rd at 1 pm Paci

DESCRIPTION:Few abstractions and tools have proved as enduring in the fie
ld of Computer Science as the relational database model. Due to the dili
gent efforts of the Postgres team\, the Postgres project has an ever inc
reasing popularity in the software world and a fully modernized feature
set. One effect of the longevity of the project has been to create a dee
p pool of received wisdom regarding the use and misuse of Data Models an
d SQL. Revisit some of the wisdom from a classic of the genre: SQL Antip
atterns: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Database Programming by Bill Karwin\,
with updated opinions and commentary to modernize the material. Stay aft
er for pizza and a rousing exchange of ideas on the past\, present\, and
future of SQL and of the Postgres project.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker: Jose
ph Hammerman&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJoseph Hammerman is a Linux Systems Administ
rator and Database Reliability Engineer with 18 years of experience. For
the last 10 years that work has focused on Postgresql database reliabil
ity and High Availability engineering practices. Some career highlights
include: serving on the iHeartRadio launch team\, working at SecondMarke
t prior to and during their acquisition by NASDAQ Private Markets\, and
founding and serving on the Squarespace Database Reliability Engineering
team. He is currently employed as Technical Lead for the DataDog Postgr
esql database reliability engineering team. He is a passionate advocate
of Free and Open Source software and the ideals that it embodies.\n\nTag

DESCRIPTION:Cheap\, Fast\, Scalable: Introducing Analytics with Open Sour
ce ClickHouse®&#13\;\n&#13\;\nReal-time analytic databases are indispens
able tools for quick insights on large datasets\, and ClickHouse current
ly leads the pack in speed and usage. This talk shows the major features
that make ClickHouse popular for real-time analytics and provides a jum
ping off point to build your own apps. We’ll explain internals of ClickH
ouse and provide explicit guidance on when to reach for it. (And when no
t to.\;) We will also demo new work from Altinity that adds separable co
mpute and storage using shared Apache Iceberg tables. We’ll include thou
ghts on design patterns for using PostgreSQL and ClickHouse productively
together.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nClickhouse is a horizontally scaling columnar
database that absolutely rips. Huge datasets\, JSON\, partitioning\, sh
arding\, aggregations\, JOINs: Clickhouse handles massive queries in mil
liseconds. We are so excited to host Robert and have him introduce anot
her open source database Clickhouse. Robert has been working on database
s since 1982\, from pre-relational systems through modern analytic DBMS\
, with a focus on distributed systems and transaction processing He has
worked principally with open source databases since 2006 and Kubernetes
 since 2018. His day job is running Altinity\, a ClickHouse vendor.&#13\;
