Not many people have sat down and implemented and worked out the problems of starting an X service\, a few UI components\, the session bus and DBus services for normal users with the mechanisms that systemd provides. \;\n \;\nThe benefits are obvious: Systemd provides excellent service monitoring and restarting capabilities\, prov ides socket and DBus activation for relevant services\, and overall impr oves desktop startup by allowing user services to start well before core services like Xorg or wayland start. In effect\, we're saying goodbye t o XDG autostart entirely\, and getting back reliability and scalability. \;\n \;\nWe converted several desktop environments including Tize n's Mobile UI\, Xfce4\, Enlightenment and more to systemd user sessions. We "\;pop the hood"\; and take a look at the implications for s tartup\, what's possible to further improve on the session startup and w here we can do better. \;\n \;\n \;\nAuke Kok is a software eng ineer at Intel's Open Source Technology Center\, and has been attempting to make Linux boot faster since 2007. In 2008\, he co-presented the &qu ot\;5-second boot"\; with Arjan van de Ven at the first LPC. Since t hen\, Auke has worked on further improving the Linux Core OS start seque nce\, first for Moblin and later with MeeGo\, where we made the first sw itch to systemd. This poses a unique chal lenge for open software that may not come pre-installed on the platform. With UEFI Secure Boot\, though\, infrastructure has been put in place t o preserve openness\, owner choice and control in addition to mitigating concerns of malware targeting the platform. This talk will provide a hi story of UEFI Secure Boot\, an overview of the implementation\, deployme nt practices\, and details on the engagement with the open source commun ity. \;\n \;\nVincent Zimmer is a Principal Engineer with Intel Co rporation. He has been working on various platform\, networking\, truste d computing and security technologies around EFI since 1999 and platform firmware since 1992. Kuhn is the President and Distinguished Technologist at Softwa re Freedom Conservancy (sfconservancy.org) and on the Board of Directors of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). Kuhn began his work in the softw are freedom movement as a volunteer in 1992\, when he became an early ad opter of the GNU/Linux operating system\, and began contributing to vari ous FLOSS projects. He worked during the 1990s as a system administrator and software developer for various companies\, and taught AP Computer S cience at Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati. Kuhn's non-profit care er began in 2000\, when he was hired by the FSF. As FSF's Executive Dire ctor from 2001–2005\, Kuhn led FSF's GPL enforcement\, launched its Asso ciate Member program\, and invented the Affero GPL. From 2005-2010\, Kuh n worked as the Policy Analyst and Technology Director of the Software F reedom Law Center. Kuhn was the primary volunteer for Conservancy from 2 006–2010\, and has been a full-time staffer since early 2011. Kuhn holds a summa cum laude B.S. in Computer Science from Loyola University in Ma ryland\, and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Cincinna ti. Kuhn's Master's thesis discussed methods for dynamic interoperabilit y of FLOSS programming languages.
