DESCRIPTION:The Portland State Aerospace Society (PSAS) is a volunteer gr
oup working on open source/open hardware amateur rockets. We build ever
ything from the ground up\, including rocket airframes\, avionics hardwa
re\, Linux flight computer software\, and communications systems.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nOur current focus is testing a new airframe and building a new
avionics system. We hope to launch with airframe only this spring/summe
r in eastern Oregon\, and launch with the full avionics stack at BALLS 1
8 in the Blackrock Desert of Nevada on October 2-4. http://www.balls17.
 com/&#13\;\n&#13\;\nhttp://psas.pdx.edu&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPSAS meets every
Tuesday in the Computer Science lounge area of the Fourth Avenue Buildin
 g. Enter at through the glass doors at the main entrance at SW 4th and
SW Hall. Walk up to the guard station in front of you\, then turn left
and walk down the hallway. Continue past the PGE office (on your left)
and the Microsoft Research lab (on your right)\, until you see a wall in
front of you. Turn right and walk through the glass double doors to th
e CS lounge area. There will be wooden tables and white boards.\n\nTags

DESCRIPTION:There are people who get really excited about building hardwa
re and Open Source. There are a few holes in the stack\, and as a commu
nity we can get started on fundamental tools that will make things easie
r for all of us. Some topics that came up in the session on Saturday.&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nThe tools for programming FPGA's are all proprietary let's
design an open source FPGA\, most of the patents are running out soon.&
#13\;\n&#13\;\nThere are open source 3d modeling tools\, but will they t
ell you where the center of gravity of your amature rocket is? That's a
n important thing to know when it passes mach 1.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRadio is
awesome. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nLook for an &quot\;Art of Community&quot\; bo
ok\, or a tshirt that says &quot\;free as in freedom&quot\; amongst the
dorkbot crowd to find the discussion. Don't worry if you miss this meet
ing there isn't even a listserv up yet it's a meeting of convenience as
many of the people from Saturday's discussion are going to be at DorkBot
  anyways. \n\nTags: hardware\, fpga\, rockets\, radio\, open source\n\n

DESCRIPTION: AltOS — Building Amateur Rocketry Software&#13\;\n
                    Keith Packard&#13\;\n Al
 tus Metrum&#13\;\n keithp@keithp.com&#13\;\n&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nAmateur rocketry enthusiasts build rockets somewhere betwe
en Estes and&#13\;\nNASA sizes. Operating as sounding rockets\, fights r
ange from 1000m to&#13\;\nmore than 30km and are generally passively fin
stabilized. Two of the&#13\;\nsignificant challenges are deploying the
recovery system components&#13\;\n(generally parachutes) and providing t
racking to locate the rocket after&#13\;\nflight. Altus Metrum is a proj
ect building hardware and software for&#13\;\namateur rocketry\, and Alt
OS is the suite of software running in the&#13\;\nrocket avionics and on
the ground to track and analyze the flight.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis talk wi
ll discuss the unique system challenges presented by&#13\;\nrocketry\, i
ncluding high acceleration and speeds\, automatic control of&#13\;\nexpl
osives and other flammable materials and the wide range of technical&#13
\;\nskills of the participants. Included will be a presentation of the&#
13\;\nhardware components used in the system and how that has driven the
&#13\;\narchitecture of the AltOS flight software over four years of&#13
 \;\ndevelopment.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the speaker:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nKeith
Packard has been developing open source software since 1986\, focusing&#
13\;\non the X Window System since 1987\, designing and implementing lar
ge parts of&#13\;\nthe current implementation. He is currently a Princi
pal Engineer with Intel's&#13\;\nOpen Source Technology Center. Keith re
ceived a Usenix Lifetime Achievement&#13\;\naward in 1999 and sits on th
 e X.org foundation board.&#13\;\n\n\nTags: rockets\n\nImported from: htt
