DESCRIPTION:In today’s world of smartphones\, tablets and MacBooks\, it’s
easy to forget that these computers evolved from machines that filled e
ntire rooms. But they did!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe Living Computer Museum\, l
ocated in Seattle\, Washington\, is dedicated to preserving\, maintainin
g\, and displaying working examples of the computers that have led us to
the information technology we enjoy today. (You can even interact with
the computers there!)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe collection was assembled by Mi
crosoft cofounder Paul G. Allen as a way to preserve the history that pu
t him and Bill Gates on the path to founding the company\, and presents
the milestones in the evolution of computers and how people use them.&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\nFor our April Meetup\, Bob Barnett from the Living Computer
Museum will be joining us to talk about the museum\, computers\, and ho
w we got to where we are today. We first met Bob when he came to eBay Po
rtland to talk to our team\, and we thought what he shared was so intere
sting we wanted to bring him back for all of you. (Also\, he made us la
ugh\, and we like people who make us laugh.)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHere's a sho
rt bio Bob put together at our request:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&quot\;After spen
ding 4 years in the Air Force\, Bob was accepted into the Computer Scien
ce program at Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo\, California. After completi
on of the program he joined the Operating Systems group and then moved o
 n to set up the Hughes Network in Arizona and California. &#13\;\n&#13\;
\nBob later took a job with aerospace company\, TRW where he joined the
RODS project to write the first Real Time Operating system in the US for
The Bonneville Power Administration in Vancouver\, WA. &#13\;\n&#13\;\n
After writing a Microwave Communication System\, Bob worked with the Por
tland Police Dispatch System design team while working at Boeing Compute
r Services.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn the mid-70s\, Bob joined Pat Terrell to gr
ow a chain of Byte Shops in the Northwest.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBob has an ent
repreneurial side and\, as such\, has founded a software company and joi
ned several start-ups over the course of his career. His most recent ven
ture has been joining forces with his longtime friend\, Paul Allen\, to
start the Living Computer Museum in Seattle\, WA.&quot\;&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Whether you nerd out over computers\, or you’re just interested in spend
ing an evening learning something new\, (or hearing from someone new)\,
you’ll want to join us on Tuesday the 28th.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRSVP now!&#13
\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n* Pizza and sodas will be provided&#13\;\n&#13\;\n*
Doors open at 5:45pm\, Presentation begins at 6:30pm&#13\;\n&#13\;\n* Th

DESCRIPTION:Want to take your career to the next level?&#13\;\nPractical\
 , Hands-on Training for Advanced Excel Formulas &amp\; Functions&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nMicrosoft Excel is perhaps the most important computer software
program used in business today. That's why so many workers and prospecti
ve employees are required to learn Excel to enter or remain in the workp
lace. Unfortunately many college students\, recent grads\, and professio
nals haven’t mastered Excel or have the adequate Excel skills employers
are seeking. According to Payscale\, “ 80 percent of job openings requir
e spreadsheet and word-processing software skills. Yet so many people ne
ver even give Excel a chance because it has an intimidating stigma aroun
d it.”&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf you walk through the finance or accounting depa
rtment at any major corporate office\, you will see computer screens fil
led with Excel spreadsheets outlining financial results\, budgets\, fore
casts\, and plans used to make big business decisions. Marketing and Pro
duct profesionals using Excel to list customer and sales targets\; manag
ing thier sales force and planning future marketing plans based on past
results. Pivot tables to quickly and easily summarize customer and sales
data by category with a quick drag-and drop. HR professionals using gia
nt spreadsheets full of employee data and understand exactly where the c
osts are coming from and how to best plan and control them for the futur
 e. Supply logistic professional to manage inventory and forecasts demand
.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn essence\, you can turn an entire department around j
ust because you know how to manipulate data in order to get an aggregate
  view.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSTRUCTURE OF COURSE&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAdvanced functi
 ons and formulas&#13\;\n * Logical functions&#13\;\n * Condition
 al functions&#13\;\n * Financial functions&#13\;\n * Text functi
 ons&#13\;\n * Date functions&#13\;\n * Array formulas&#13\;\n&#1
 3\;\nLookups and data tables&#13\;\n * Using lookup functions&#13\;\
 n * Using MATCH and INDEX&#13\;\n * Creating data tables&#13\;\n
 &#13\;\nAdvanced data management&#13\;\n * Validating cell entries&#
 13\;\n * Advanced filtering&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAdvanced charting&#13\;\n

 &#13\;\n * Formatting PivotTables&#13\;\n * PivotCharts&#13\;\n&

 al Tools&#13\;\n * Goal Seek&#13\;\n * Scenarios&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Macros and Visual Basic&#13\;\n * Running and recording a macro&#13\
 ;\n * Working with VBA code&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBENEFITS&#13\;\nNot only
are many business professionals using Excel to perform everyday function
al tasks in the workplace\, an increasing number of employers rely on Ex
cel for decision support. The ability to analyze data is a powerful skill
that helps you make better decisions. Microsoft Excel is one of the top
tools for data analysis and the built-in pivot tables are arguably the
most popular analytic tool.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMAKE YOUR RESUME STAND OUT&#1
3\;\nThey are NOT seeing if you simply have Excel as a skill. They are d
iving deeping when it comes to determining which candidate to interview
and hire. They look for Pivot Table\, VLOOKUP\, Macros\, VBA\, Condition
al Formatting\, Charting and Filtering…These are far more telling of you
r ability to an employer then writing Excel. Someone who writes VLOOKUP\
, Pivot Table\, Filtering demonstrates an ability to analyse data and so
has eliminated a potential barrier in the mind of the hiring manager re
viewing your resume. In essence\, use actual Excel functions in your Res
ume!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nINCREASE YOUR EARNING POTENTIAL&#13\;\nDid you know
that Excel know-how can instantly increase your job prospects as well as
your starting salary? Excel is a transferrable skill that any hiring ma
nager understands is critical.&#13\;\nResearch shows job applicants who
know MS Excel make $22.66 per hour on average compared to the $20.14 per
hour their peers make who don’t know the program. That’s roughly an ext
ra $20 per eight-hour workday and $100 per work week\, simply for knowin
 g how to use a single computer program. Moreover\, full-time employees i
n certain industries can see a starting salary bump of anywhere from $1\
,000 to $7\,000 per year based on their Excel skills. That’s not chump c
hange you can ignore.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nINSPIRING ENTREPRENEUR?&#13\;\nA ma
jority 63 percent of twenty-somethings want to start their own business.
How will you stay organized\, track data\, or forecast your finances if
you’re not spreadsheet-savvy?&#13\;\nMany millennials simply want their
first job. But\, what about your performance once someone hires you? Th
e biggest complaint employers have about millennials is that they lack b
asic hard and soft skills. These skills include things like teamwork and
problem solving\, but also basic administrative skills like MS Word and
Powerpoint. Once you’re hired\, you want to meet the basic requirements
of your role without stressing.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR&#13\

DESCRIPTION:CAT BarCamp is a free unconference hosted by the Computer Act
ion Team at Portland State University every year.&#13\;\nBarCamps are fr
ee conferences where the people who show up on the day of decide what th
e conference is about. No scheduled talks are planned beforehand by the
organizers\, making the range of talks and topics covered each year enti
rely unique. Timeslots are posted in an accessible place and the attenda
nts are given (fairly) free reign to post and choose which talks they wo
uld like to attend or give. We only ask that topics be respectful and PG
-rated. &#13\;\nThe CAT at PSU is an ops training organization that has
secured the venue and is organizing the event. We expect many job-hungry
  students skilled in development\, computer science\, operations\, and e
verything else to be in attendance at this event and we want to enable a
s many connections as possible. Because the CAT is a tech organization a
nd has ties to the larger tech community\, many speakers will likely giv
