s have introduced more support for security\, privacy and compliance ove
r the last few years. We expect this to increase as compliance issues su
ch as GDPR and other data compliance challenges arise.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn
this session\, Karen will be discussing the newer features from a datab
ase designers points of view\, including:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\
 nData Masking&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nEnd-to-end Encryption&#13\;\n&#13\;

 \n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nData Categorization and Classification&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe'll look at the new features\, why you should consider

is fluid.  Critical business events must be responded to when they occu

lytics must be as agile as the business itself. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe days
of looking at your data in the rear-view mirror are coming to an end.
We are at the dawn of a new analytic revolution:  the real-time database
.   &#13\;\n&#13\;\nMillisecond latency is the new analytic performance
standard.  A new class of GPU-accelerated databases enable this level of
performance.  GPU-accelerated databases are over 100x more performant t
han even the “fastest” in-memory data stores.   &#13\;\n&#13\;\nGPU-acce
lerated databases can provide extreme levels of scalability without nega
tive performance impacts.  They are also easy to implement\; thanks to t

DESCRIPTION:RSVP at DAMAPDX.org for registration info for this online eve
 nt.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPresented by Daniel Lenski\, PhD&#13\;\n&#13\;\nVirtu
al private network (VPN) software creates a connection between peers acr
oss a wide-area network (normally\, the Internet!) and builds an encrypt
ed tunnel that behaves like a direct connection to the same local\, priv
ate network. VPNs have become a pervasive feature of modern workplaces\,
and even more indispensable in this era of COVID-19 and widespread remo
te work.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe most widely-deployed VPN client and server s
oftware in workplace environments — including Cisco AnyConnect\, Juniper
/Pulse Networks\, PAN GlobalProtect\, and others — is all proprietary an
d closed-source. These VPNs differ in idiosyncratic ways\, ranging from
authentication to security requirements imposed on the client computers.
Combined with bugs\, missing features\, and often mystifyingly vague er
ror reporting\, they can be very difficult to use\, especially for those
who need to access multiple VPNs. Under the hood\, however\, they all w
ork in extremely similar ways.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe speaker is one of the
main developers of OpenConnect\, an open-source VPN client which can con
nect to all of the aforementioned VPNs using a common interface (with se
veral others in development). In this talk\, he will explain in detail h
ow modern client-server VPNs work\, in terms of authentication\, encrypt
ed tunneling\, Internet protocol routing\, and client roaming. He will i
llustrate how the operation of a VPN can be reverse-engineered and reimp

13\;\n&#13\;\nMorning Session: 9AM – 11:30 AM: Eric Lyness and Victoria
Da-Poian\, NASA&#13\;\n&#13\;\nEric Lyness is the NASA software and oper

Analyzer on the ExoMars 2020 rover and Victoria Da-Poian is an Aerospac
e Engineer. They will present their talk\, Machine Learning to Find Life
on Mars and Beyond.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn 2021 the European ExoMars rover w
ill land on Mars with the Mars Organic Molecular Analyzer (MOMA) laborat
ory to analyze soil samples searching for past or present life. NASA is
developing machine learning algorithms to help the scientists more quick
ly analyze the data when it arrives from Mars. In this talk\, we will pr
esent the current work using MOMA mass spectrometer data acquired during
ground testing. Using this data we are aiding the scientists by matchin
g new spectra with the most similar spectra from past experiments. We wi
ll present the nuances of mass spectra\, our limitations with respect to
data\, and our approach to the problem. We hope to elicit feedback from

DESCRIPTION:Bio: &#13\;\nSemih Salihoğlu is an Associate Professor and a
David R. Cheriton Faculty Fellow at University of Waterloo. His research
focuses on developing systems for managing\, querying\, or doing analyt
ics on graph-structured data. His main on-going systems project is Kùzu\
, which is a new graph database management system that integrates novel
storage\, indexing and query processing techniques. He holds a PhD from
Stanford University and is a recipient of the VLDB 2018 Best Paper and t
he VLDB 2022 Best Experiments and Analysis Paper awards.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Abstract:&#13\;\nIn this talk\, I will present the Kùzu graph database m
anagement system (GDBMS) that we are developing at University of Waterlo
 o. Datasets and workloads of popular applications that use GDBMSs requir
e a set of storage and query processing features that relational DBMSs (
RDBMSs) do not traditionally optimize for. These include optimizations f
 or: (i) many-to-many (m-n) joins\; (ii) cyclic joins\; (iii) recursive j
oins\; (iv) semi-structured data storage\; and (v) support for universal
resource identifiers. Kùzu aims to integrate state-of-art storage\, ind
exing\, and&#13\;\nquery processing techniques to highly optimize for th
is feature set. I will start by presenting the overall vision of Kùzu an
d then talk about the novel join operators in the system that performs j
oins using compressed factorized representations of intermediate tables.
Kùzu is actively being developed to be a fully functional open-source D
BMS with the goal of wide user adoption and under a permissible license.

\, organizations can anchor their Data Management priorities with a matu

 nopsis&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA Pragmatic\, Agile\, and Communicative approach t
o defining the What\, Who\, and When of Data Management to have good dat
a for AI.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMost organizations are living an urgency to get
value out of their data. They are jumping directly to implement MDM ini
tiatives\, to move to the cloud\, or to implement advanced analytics\, a
nd now\, to adopt AI\, without a real understanding of the problems that
need to be solved and the priority to tackle them. There's though an in
creasing awareness of having to manage data in a better way\, but there'
s no clear understanding of the path to follow. Data Strategy is the key
element to prioritize and guide resource allocation in the best way. Th
