DESCRIPTION:PDXOSGeo connects again this week\, Wednesday February 25\, 6
:30p Hot Lips Pizza @ the Natural Capital Center 721 NW 9th Ave\, Portla

;\n&#13\;\nThis month we will be discussing Landslide Susceptibility Mod
eling With Information Theory: The Terroir of Landslides\, with David Pe
rcy\, aka &quot\;Percy&quot\;. Percy is preparing to defend his disserta
tion on Spatial Reconstructability Analysis\, and led us in in a lively
discussion in January. This month he will share another aspect of his wo
rk on applying Reconstructability Analysis (RA) to categorical raster da
tasets. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nRA is a form of machine learning algorithm (MLA)
that works exclusively with discrete data\, so categorical data such as
the variables in the SSURGO soils database\, the geologic database (DOG
AMI)\, and land cover (NLCD) can be used as inputs in their native forma
t without conversion to dummy variables\, as is typically done in other
MLAs.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFor his February demo\, Percy will show how these v
ariables are used along with topographic data to model landslide suscept
ibility in two of the counties ranked highest by FEMA for most landslide
hazards: Lincoln and Tillamook. Percy will show that there is evidence
to suggest that we can map a Terroir of Landslides\, using combinations
 of soil type\, geology\, elevation\,and terrane group\, similar to the c
ombinations of environmental factors that are used to characterize wines
\, chocolate\, and coffee. Results will be presented that show how these
data are useful in making hazard maps.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAll of the extrac
tion for analysis was done in QGIS and Python using open source GIS libr
aries Shapely and Rasterio. Code will be shared and discussed!&#13\;\n&#

DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person meetup.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nModern developer
experience on WildFly&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHas your view of Enterprise Java ev
olved with the platform? In this session\, James R. Perkins (Jakarta EE
&amp\; Jakarta REST Co-Lead) dives into the modern developer experience
on WildFly.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe will explore the latest in Jakarta EE and
how WildFly has transformed its provisioning model.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nYou w
ill learn how to build slim\, cloud-ready runtimes using the WildFly Boo
table JAR and Galleon\, moving away from the traditional &quot\;full ser
ver&quot\; installation. Finally\, we will look at a new approach to int
egration testing using wildfly-testing-tools\, demonstrating how to easi
ly spin up environments and test Jakarta REST endpoints with confidence.
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker:&#13\;\nJames Perkins is a Software Engineer at
IBM and a longtime open-source contributor. He currently leads the RESTE
asy project and helps drive the future of enterprise Java as a co-lead o
f Jakarta EE and Jakarta REST.&#13\;\nA WildFly committer for over 15 ye

DESCRIPTION:This event is hybrid\; a Zoom link will be emailed to regist
ered attendees closer to the date\, but please note that the talk itself
doesn't start until 6:30!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFebruary is right in the middl
e of peak hiring season\, and PNSQC has a couple of speakers lined up to
help you land that next role in a very competitive market.&#13\;\n&#13\
;\nFirst\, Jeremy Elwood will give his talk titled The Paradox of Plenty
 : A Modern Hiring Story. It's a reflection on finding a job\, but told f
rom the employer's perspective: exploring what actually differentiated s
uccessful candidates from the rest\, why resume screening failed to surf
ace the strongest candidates\, and what to look for in a successful cand
idate. Along the way\, it offers concrete advice for everyone: how job s
eekers can better present their experience\, approach take-home challeng
es\, and prepare for interviews\; and how hiring managers can ask better
questions\, design meaningful evaluations\, and reduce unnecessary pain
in the process. Ultimately\, the talk aims not only to surface systemic
problems in modern software engineer hiring\, but also to offer practic
al guidance and cautious optimism for navigating (and surviving) the &qu
 ot\;paradox of plenty&quot\;.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHeather Wilcox is excited t
o follow with her talk titled Resume Tips and Tricks\, which will go fur
ther in depth on how to write a resume that hiring managers will notice\
, along with other helpful hints for survival in the era of AI. As an ex
perienced hiring manager and job seeker herself\, Heather has reviewed h
undreds (maybe thousands?) of resumes. She can tell you that the AI and
recruiter generated resumes are usually easy to spot and often treated w
ith a certain amount of disdain and distrust. But\, at the same time\, y

pital Center 721 NW 9th Ave\, Portland OR. Join us for some show and tel
l and good open geo discussion!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTopic for January: David
Percy “Percy” has been doing research on applying Reconstructability Ana
lysis (RA) to categorical raster datasets since 2012\, and is preparing
to defend his dissertation on Spatial Reconstructability Analysis soon.
RA is a form of machine learning that works exclusively with discrete da
ta\, so categorical data such as the National Land Cover Database is a p
erfect source of data for it. These NLCD data have been analyzed in atte
mpts to predict forest dynamics (clearcuts)\, and wildfire size\, specif
ically looking at how historical vegetation affects these outcomes. Resu
lts will be presented that show how these data are useful in modeling fu
ture events. All of the extraction for analysis was done in Python using
open source GIS libraries Shapely and Rasterio. Code will be shared and
  discussed. \n\nTags: opensource gis geospatial\n\nImported from: http:/

DESCRIPTION:Come out and join us to network with local cloud native peers
 .&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAgenda:&#13\;\n5:00pm to 5:30pm – Pizza and Networking!
Food sponsored by Mezmo&#13\;\n&#13\;\n5:45pm - Streamlining Telemetry
Data: Building a Telemetry Pipeline to Handle High-Cardinality Metrics b
 y Chelsea Wright @ Mezmo&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHandling high-cardinality teleme
try data efficiently is crucial for modern observability systems. In thi
s session\, we will explore strategies for designing a scalable telemetr
y pipeline that can process large volumes of diverse metrics without per
formance bottlenecks. We’ll cover best practices for data ingestion\, st
orage optimization\, and query performance\, along with real-world techn
iques to mitigate challenges like high dimensionality and resource const
raints. Attendees will gain insights into building a robust telemetry pi
 peline that balances accuracy\, efficiency\, and cost-effectiveness.&#13
\;\n&#13\;\n6:15pm - What Producing Sound Effects Taught Me About Distri
buted Systems by Bret Bernhoft&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs a sound designer and cl
oud native developer\, I have discovered the art of crafting immersive a
udio effects mirrors the science of engineering distributed systems. In
this talk\, I will share how core audio production concepts like managin
g feedback loops\, dealing with signal degradation and understanding the
effects of reverb offer direct parallels to tackling challenges in micr
oservices\, observability and network latency. Just as a single\, comple
x sound effect is built from many interdependent layers\, modern applica
tions rely on an orchestration of services and timing\, demanding both p
recision and systems thinking.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe will explore how consid
ering signal-to-noise ratio can clarify your logging strategies and how
the art of mixing audio tracks provides valuable insights into resource
limits as well as task prioritization within your deployments. By drawin
g on these analogies\, this session aims to equip you with a new perspec
tive that makes the complexities of cloud native architectures a bit mor
e understandable\, all through the lens of sound.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n6:45pm
to 8:00pm – Networking and Board games!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nNone of this woul
d be possible without our amazing sponsors:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Thanks to
