Learn how to work with surface mount technologies. This workshop is suitable for newcomers to SMT as well as more experienced hobbyists who are looking for a reliable method for building projects using SMT. We will cover the basics of surface mount parts and the tools necessary to work efficiently with them, including a temperature controlled hot plate reflow system which you can build. And we will offer a hands on build session where you will go through all the steps in populating a PCB with parts and doing the reflow soldering process to end up with a working project.

No tools or prior experience is required although, if possible, please bring a soldering iron, some type of magnifier (reading glasses, visor, etc), a desk or work lamp and a good pair of fine point tweezers. We will have some tools available to use during the workshop.

You will get a circuit board and parts kit for use during the class that is yours to keep.

Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time. Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance. We'll be the kids with all the coolest stuff on the table. Hope to see you there.

You can learn to solder! Anyone can. Soldering is a basic skill for just about all electronics projects. If you've never soldered before, this workshop will give you the confidence to solder in less than two hours. If you want to learn how to solder better, this workshop will show you how. If you have soldered before, this workshop will teach you to solder surface mount parts with confidence.

Mitch Altman, from Noisebridge, will be giving one of his famous workshops at PDX Hackerspace. Mitch has taught thousands of people to solder and make cool things with microcontrollers at his workshops at hackerspaces, conferences and schools almost everywhere. He can teach you, too, if you like.

If you have ever had any curiosity about making something with electronics, then please join us. Anyone and everyone can learn to make cool things. And it’s fun. And easy! You can learn to make something cool with electronics in one workshop, and take your cool project home with you!
