HumaniNet will present a status report on our Maps 2.0 initiative, which is exploring ready-to-use Web-based mapping tools for humanitarian and nonprofit organizations.

Dylan Myers, a digital mapping specialist at Google Maps, will also be there to answer your questions on the ever-expanding toolkit of Google Maps and Google Earth. Dylan was a key member of a Mercy Corps team that conducted a GIS (geospatial information systems) project in Indonesia following the 2004 tsunami.

Conversation ad networking begin at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., Gregg Swanson and Matt Blair of HumaniNet will briefly discuss the initial findings of the research, which is based on interviews with aid and relief managers in Afghanistan, Sudan, Singapore, London, and – not least - Portland.

Among the topics: some notes from Matt on emerging Web 2.0 social mapping services, including the promise and pitfalls of 'crowd-sourced' geospatial data.

Following Q&A, you can meet Dylan, see demos, exchange ideas, practiceyour “geo-geek speak,” and learn more about what online maps can do for your project or organization.

The 501 Tech Club event is co-sponsored by NTEN.

Join the PDX CANswer Project!

Come for drinks, food, & networking with other young professionals who want to make a difference in the fight against cancer (& plan cool events)!

The PDX CANswer Project is a membership organization of young philanthropic Oregon residents who range in age from 22 to 40. Our members share in the belief that cancer will be eliminated in our lifetime and that through our ongoing fundraising efforts, cancer will no longer threaten the lives of those we love.

The financial support of the PDX CANswer Project allows the Society to continue its contributions to national research efforts, local, statewide and national advocacy efforts, education about prevention and early detection, and support for the more than 19,000 Oregonians who will be diagnosed with cancer this year.

As the use of video games becomes more pervasive--think Angry Birds to Farmville to Wii Fitness--it becomes useful to consider their wider impact on our lives. Are they merely useful for entertainment, or can games help create change through creativity, imagination and play? Can games be valuable for mission-based groups like non-profits, NGOs and community organizations? How can game development connect students to real-world problems?

We’ll kick off the evening with a panel discussion including speakers at the intersection of gaming and game development for education, non-profit enablement and youth outreach. Our panelists will explore how gaming and the creation of games can positively impact our local communities and wider world mission-based efforts. Following audience Q&A, everyone is welcome to continue the discussion over networking, food and soft drinks.

Join us to discuss how creating games and game development can benefit the social good!

Snowdrift.coop is a non-profit community platform building a new sustainable patronage system for public goods (particularly free/libre/open works). The site uses the Yesod web framework written in Haskell alongside basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript. We welcome volunteers in all areas including non-technical general design, organizing, and other tasks like co-op structure issues.

We have a strong Portland foundation with one of the co-founders, the lead developer, and several active volunteers and supporters in the area.

At this meetup, we'll be meeting long-time volunteer Jason Harrer (aka JazzyEagle) who is in town for a rare business visit. We'll also be celebrating and wishing well to Aaron and Bryan who are heading down to the Southern California Linux Expo to promote Snowdrift.coop this weekend.
