We begin the new year with our Clean energy SIG meeting. The agenda for the evening includes a presentation by Ms. Lacey Riddle, Focus Oregon Organizer for Focus The Nation who will present a project based on proven solar thermal techniques- The SunnySide Neighbourhood Project Overview.

Sunnyside Neighborhood Project Overview

Sunnyside Neighborhood Energy (SunNE) is conceived as a comprehensive solution to local thermal energy needs. SunNE is a project of Northwest Neighborhood Energy (N2E), a new non-profit incorporated in Oregon. SunNE will eventually be structured as a community-owned district energy (DE) utility powered by renewable sources that will serve Sunnyside Environmental School and the surrounding historic neighborhood and commercial areas. The project is modeled on existing mid-sized DE utilities in Sweden, Denmark and Canada, which use solar thermal storage and biofuel boilers to provide thermal energy for detached single-family homes, multi-family residential and small commercial buildings. Adapting these successful international examples for implementation in Oregon gives us a scalable, replicable model whose economic and environmental impact will be tremendous.

Planned system components include thermal solar collectors, mass thermal storage for heating and anticipated cooling, combining water to water and ground-coupled heat pump technology, waste heat recovery, PV arrays and biofuel boilers for boosting and back-up. A distribution system of hydronic insulated pipes will deliver hot and chilled water for space heating, cooling and domestic hot water to the school, several hundred nearby residences, and commercial buildings. SunNE will operate as a member-owned, unregulated franchise utility within the City of Portland.

Please join us for a panel presentation on cleantech financing – focusing on the nuts and bolts of tapping into government funding.

With the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (also known as the Stimulus Package) signed into law, how do emerging cleantech or renewable energy companies in need of financing access the grants, loans and other funding that can help their business thrive? The scarcity of venture capital funding and a non-existent IPO market makes understanding the incentives and funding available from Washington, D.C. and Oregon more important than ever.

K&L Gates has assembled a panel of speakers who have not only helped cleantech companies access government and traditional funding, but also helped make that money work best in the long term.

Attendance is complimentary but space is limited.

The panelists will address:

the range of funding options for clean technology project finance
how to successfully and efficiently access funding from the Stimulus Package

legal and regulatory risks and their impact on future revenue,

project feasibility and financeability

Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the U.S. Department of Energy will be awarding billions of dollars in grants, loans and loan guarantees to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. The competition for these funds has already begun. Some application deadlines are rapidly approaching. For companies interested in seeking these funds, the time to act is now.

In this seminar, we will provide practical tips on how to approach the U.S. Department of Energy’s application process. Topics covered in the seminar will include:

Tracking funding opportunities
Determining which opportunities best fit your business
Preparing a compelling and complete application
Preserving the confidentiality of sensitive business information
Minimizing delays in the application process
Understanding the ‘strings’ attached to federal funding

In 2009 Brammo re-invented itself with the ambition of producing fully roadworthy battery-electric motorcycles that are high quality, and cost/performance competitive with traditional internal- combustion engine bikes. Now in 2012 we are launching serial production of our 3rd model motorcycle, and achieving our dream.

This presentation provides a glimpse into the culture and philosophy of electrical engineering and electronics manufacturing at the most exciting young company in the motorcycle industry.

If you haven't already signed up for the Hack tomorrow at PSU, we hope some details included here will entice you. To prepare our participants for a fun and productive day, below are details and resources for the Hack.

Goals: To generate ideas are innovative to solving environmental and sustainability, social equity issues through utilization of software and mobile apps. Don’t forget to have some fun.

Idea Generation: To start, you should ask the following questions:
1) What issues you and your team would like to tackle? (ie. carbon emissions reduction by buildings or vehicles, solar potential identifier, change of personal habits, e-waste tracking, etc.)
2) What do other similar applications exist on the market? Sometimes, building on existing apps can resolve a more refined product.
3) What is the marketability? Is it scalable?

The best project ideas are one that you are passionate about, and have some components of competition and linkage to social media.

Finding Data:
While you are brainstorming ideas, you should also consider data availability as well. It is not the end of the world if you don’t have data sets or APIs to mock up a prototype. Simply build your own datasets, even if just a few that are enough for you to test out your product.

See the Cleanweb Hack resource guide for APIs, data sets, sample projects and project ideas. (http://tinyurl.com/m7a744e)

Judging Criteria:
At the end of day, your prototype will be scored on these criteria:
1) Impact on resource and sustainability issues
2) Design and usability of prototype
3) Feasibility and marketability
4) Good use of datasets and APIs

Prizes: 1st Place - $500, 2nd Place - $250

Bragging right is priceless.

Our judges are looking forward to your innovations!

Winston Saunders, Director of Data Center Security Initiatives at Intel
Chris Harder, Division Manager at the Portland Development Commission (PDC)
Skip Newberry, President at the Technology Association of Oregon (TAO)

Questions? Ask us on Twitter (@cleanwebPDX), Facebook or via email cleanwebpdx@gmail.com

What is Cleanweb?
Cleanweb is a meme, a movement, a market that individuals/organizations are leveraging information technologies to address the world's critical resource challenges. This web of technologies can optimize how we use resources across the way we live, work, and play. It creates the biggest impact and economic opportunity of our time.

Oregon Best invests at very early "risky" stages - before the technology has been proven.
We then support startups in several ways by:
a.) Investing between $50k - $250 per startup
b.) Making Introductions / networking with key partners
c.) Funding interns to work in their company
d.) Connecting co's to an experienced CEO or Entrepreneur-In-Residence to help them navigate growth, priorities, business plans, pitches
e.) Help with manufacturing / scale up through our partnerships
f.) showcasing the company at conferences, trade shows and BESTFEST
g.) Support with Government grants SBIR/ STTR

Please register to attend! Lots of great information to learn about and resources to help tech startups.

BEST FEST convenes a diverse audience of entrepreneurs, investors, partners, corporates, university researchers, students, and scientists – all of whom share the common goal of accelerating solutions to environmental challenges and want to create opportunities to engage.

Gives entrepreneurs a crash course in how to build a ClimateTech* Startup. 45Camp JumpStart provides a concentrated 3-day weekend with training, mentorship and connections to let you explore the idea of building a ClimateTech Startup. You’ll also see examples of VertueLab Entrepreneurs who are making it in ClimateTech. VertueLab is a ClimateTech non-profit that is focused on helping Pacific Northwest ClimateTech entrepreneurs achieve their goals.

Ideas come from anywhere, and individuals with those ideas often don’t have the entrepreneurial awareness, tools, or guidance to get started in their exploration. Also, entrepreneurship is new in many communities and they need a jumpstart to gain the right knowledge and connections to move forward.

The best way to discover, learn, and explore entrepreneurship is through a hands-on approach and meeting others that are building technology and can explain by showing. JumpStart Weekends are designed to be a comfortable space to gather curious individuals and introduce them to tools and methods they can use to explore their ideas and get instant feedback and mentorship, all packaged over a weekend.

Although it's in our mission to address the impacts of climate change, entrepreneurship is for everyone. We want to increase access to entrepreneurship, and provide the tools and knowledge to everyone so that we are all part of the solution. So no prior knowledge of ClimateTech is required, all you need is an idea and the curiosity to know more and explore in a weekend of fun, we encourage you to apply!
