 chnology freedom&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRussell volunteers with the Portland Sta
 te Aerospace Society's (PSAS)&#13\;\nOreSat program as an Industry Advis
 or. PSAS is a rocket club at&#13\;\nPortland State University. The OreSa
 t program works towards having&#13\;\nsmall interactive satellites put i
 nto orbit by friendly launch&#13\;\nservices. OreSat currently consists 
 of three small satellites based on&#13\;\na common design\, the first on
 e is due to launch in January. Russell's&#13\;\nrole is to help out with
  a system called dxwifi\, a long distance&#13\;\nS-band communication li
 nk. The goal is for ground-based student groups&#13\;\naround the state 
 to receive live video broadcast from orbit as the&#13\;\nsatellite passe
 s overhead. Earlier this year\, a high school student&#13\;\napplied and
  got our satellite a ride on a high altitude balloon&#13\;\nthrough a NA
 SA program. One of the goals was to capture wifi data&#13\;\nbeing trans
 mitted by the payload. Because of the distances involved\,&#13\;\nthis r
 equires aiming a directional antenna at the balloon. This talk&#13\;\nwi
 ll tell the story of how Russell waded his way towards a solution&#13\;\
 nusing math\, some hand tools\, open-source software and some ingenuity.
 &#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout Russell:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRussell has been a Linux u
 ser since 1992. He worked for a few decades&#13\;\ndoing data management
 \, programming\, and analysis for a small&#13\;\nscientific consulting f
 irm. Since 2005 he has been deeply involved in&#13\;\nthe Personal Telco
  Project and trying to bring about&#13\;\ntelecommunications policy in t
 he users interests\, while also hacking&#13\;\non router firmware. Since
  2018\, he's been involved in an effort to&#13\;\nbring at-cost fiber in
 frastructure to the Portland metro area\,&#13\;\nMunicipal Broadband PDX
