DESCRIPTION:Fieldwork for Human Computer Interaction: A 4-Part Workshop o
 n Ethnographically-Informed Fieldwork&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSara Bly and Franço
ise Brun-Cottan&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA growing number of Human-Computer Intera
ction (HCI) researchers and practitioners use the results of fieldwork t
o guide the design and evaluate the user experience of interactive syste
ms and technologies. Why? Because data about real people in real situati
ons spurs creativity and innovation around practical challenges\, result
ing in more useful and usable artifacts.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFieldwork for HC
I typically consists of firsthand observations made in the naturally occ
urring environment of use (as opposed to studies performed in a controll
ed environment). Many techniques are adapted from anthropology – particu
larly ethnography.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs the mobile app and manufacturing in
dustries grow in Oregon\, UX designers are increasingly recruited from o
 ut-of-state. The Computer-Human Interaction Forum of Oregon - CHIFOO - r
ecognizes a local need for more basic training in this area.&#13\;\n&#13
 \;\nWorkshop Format&#13\;\nThis practicum is a new offering by CHIFOO\,
separate from the popular monthly guest lecture series. Developed with i
ndustry experts Sara Bly and Françoise Brun-Cottan\, this unique pilot p
rogram serves as a first test model for future educational programs by C
HIFOO.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTo conduct fieldwork well\, the researcher needs t
he knowledge\, ability and access to observe the activities and complexi
ties of people within the context of their day-to-day pursuits. This mak
es it difficult to practice in a classroom-only or online environment. T
he methodology is best learned by apprenticeship and experience.&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nEach session builds on the prior one. Participants are expected
to attend three private classroom sessions\, to complete group assignmen
ts in between\, and to ‘report out’ on the experience in teams at the la
st session\, an open CHIFOO event. Sessions will be held:&#13\;\n&#13\;\
 n* Sunday\, October 5\, 12-4 pm&#13\;\n* Wednesday\, October 15 6-9 pm&#
 13\;\n* Wednesday\, October 29\, 6-9 pm&#13\;\n* Wednesday\, November 12
 \, 6-9 pm&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWho Should Participate?&#13\;\nThe practicum is
tailored especially towards locals who seek a better command and unders
tanding of the skills utilized by User Experience Analysts\, Design Engi
neers\, and Interaction Designers.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTo make the learning e
xperience as rich\, collaborative and personalized as possible\, the # o
f participants is capped at 16. Group exercises are designed to be compl
 eted in teams of 2-4.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the Instructors&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nDr. Sara Bly – Head Instructor – Sara Bly has been an active researche
r and practitioner in qualitative user studies for more than 25 years. E
thnographically-informed fieldwork is a major component of her user expe
rience studies\, which focus on understanding the context of an activity
as well as the specific user task. During Sara’s tenure at the Xerox Pa
lo Alto Research Center\, she served on multi-disciplinary teams with an
thropologists\, designers\, and computer scientists. Sara has worked in
a variety of companies and development teams\, and has experience teachi
ng user study techniques for both industry and academia. She holds a PhD
in Computer Science from University of California\, Davis. Currently Sa
ra Bly lives in Oregon and consults nationally.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFrancoise
  Brun-Cottan\, Phd – Instructor - Anthropologist Francoise Brun-Cottan s
pent over a decade as a Work Place Ethnographer and Interaction Analyst
with Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center). Specialties include:&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nIntegration of ethnographic insights with engineering research\
, product/services development and design to inform innovation.&#13\;\nE
thnography - Observation and interviewing\, analysis and representations
of work practices and user experience. Video ethnography&#13\;\nConvers
ation and Interaction Analysis&#13\;\nWork Practice and Participatory De
sign Studies.&#13\;\nCurrently Francoise Brun-Cottan consults for librar
ies\, government agencies\, large corporations and research agencies.&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\nClodine Mallinckrodt – Facilitator – From Wall Street to Ma
rCom Way\, Clodine Mallinckrodt’s varied background spans the early days
of interactive multimedia and distance learning to data security and st
rategy consulting. Currently\, Clodine is Manager of Ambulatory Reportin
g &amp\; Analytics for Providence Health &amp\; Services\, where she enj
oys enabling analyst teams to deliver data visualization and exploration
tools to healthcare executives throughout the west. She helped develop
 new Providence Consumer Segments\, is a GE-certified Change Facilitator\
, and trained in Lean. Based in Portland\, OR\, Clodine Mallinckrodt is
