DESCRIPTION:&#13\;\nWe'll have pizza\, snacks &amp\; beer starting at 6pm
\, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the
 presentations.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n# PRESENTATIONS at 7pm&#13\;\n&#13\;\n* Ma
rkus Roberts: Ruby hangman&#13\;\n* David Celis: Benchmarking&#13\;\nCov
ering the basics of benchmarking in Ruby\, application to HTTP load test
ing\, and some gotchas along the way.&#13\;\n* Jason Clark: Make an Even
t of It! &#13\;\nAre your controllers jumbled with seemingly unrelated s
teps? Does testing any bit of application logic require fixtures and set
up helpers a mile long?&#13\;\nEvented patterns create a vocabulary of w
hat happens in your system\, and a way to separate code triggering event
s from code that responds to them. That helps tame the sprawl by setting
clean boundaries\, simplifying tests\, and keeping your dependencies is
olated.&#13\;\nThis talk reveals the power of events and what's already
in Rails to help you.&#13\;\n* Chuck Lauer Vose: Building kick-ass inte
rnal education programs (for large and small budgets) &#13\;\nThere are
not enough senior programmers in the world to satisfy the needs of our o
rganizations\; but educating your own developers is crazy expensive and
 hard\, right?&#13\;\nIt turns out there lots of effective\, low-cost\, l
ow commitment ways to inject education into your organization\, I'll sho
w you some of the low commitment ways to engage your peers\, how to eval
uate your needs\, how to measure your progress\, and how to plan for fut
ure ed needs.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAfter presentations we'll have more sociali
zing time.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n# Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue
 and beer\, pizza &amp\; snacks this month!&#13\;\n&#13\;\n# &#13\;\n&#13
\;\nARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the Ne
w Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby\, however\,
and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 28th floor
\, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pi
ne. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right.
Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby\, then go right
again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair
of double doors marked &quot\;freight elevator.&quot\; You can get up b
y buzzing in with the intercom\, and saying you're here for New Relic. R
 ide on up to the 28th floor\, you'll easily find the bike parking.&#13\;
\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade\, also know
n as pdxruby and pdx.rb\, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Po
rtland\, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in t
he language and its implementations\, tools\, libraries and frameworks\,
such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for
presentations\, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come to
gether to share their knowledge\, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If y
ou'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed\, please post
to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the
  month\, &quot\;Ruby Tuesday&quot\; -- see you there!&#13\;\n\n\nTags: r
