DESCRIPTION:This event runs from Thursday\, September 12\, 2013 at 4pm th
 rough Friday\, September 13\, 2013 at 5pm.\n\nDescription:\nCalling all
designers\, programmers and eco-warriors:&#13\;\nthis hackathon is for t
he birds.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRSVP to hold your spot at www.squawkathon.org&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nTop 5 reasons to attend:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n1. Apply your skil
ls to an important environmental challenge&#13\;\n&#13\;\n2. Meet and wo
rk with some seriously smart and creative Portlanders&#13\;\n&#13\;\n3.
Showcase your talents to international marine bird scientists and the Pa
ckard Foundation\, who have pioneered environmental work in sustainable
seafood and beyond&#13\;\n&#13\;\n4. A monetary prize will be awarded to
the winning team&#13\;\n&#13\;\n5. There'll be free food\, beer and oth
er surprises for all participants&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTHE PROBLEM&#13
\;\nSeabird bycatch is when birds are unintentionally captured and kille
d in fishing activities. Bycatch is always bad\, but for endangered spec
ies with already vulnerable populations\, it’s devastating. In order to
address this critical environmental challenge\, we need to find an ingen
ious way to track this bycatch. Better data collection could lead to bet
ter long-term management and protection protocols.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWHY ME
 ?&#13\;\nIf you have design\, programming\, or project management chops\
, you can prevent the accidental death&#13\;\nof marine birds. A monetar
y prize will be awarded to the winning team. Plus\, there will be plenty
of free food and beer.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWAIT\, HOLD ON... WHAT’S A HACKAT
HON?&#13\;\nA hackathon is an event where creative and tech-savvy people
collaborate to build solutions for hard-to-solve problems. You’ll fit r
 ight in.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n &#13\;\n&#13\;\nFAQs&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhere can I
contact the organizer with any questions?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPlease direct
 your questions to packardx [at] contextpartners [dot] com.&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nWhere can I find some more background on the issue?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRel
evant background materials will be shared to the Squawkathon wiki as the
 y become available: wiki.squawkathon.org&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWill the David a
nd Lucile Packard Foundation provide funding to further develop concepts
?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThrough this Squawkathon\, the Packard Foundation is in
terested in surfacing ideas for efficiently monitoring marine bird bycat
ch. The ideas that come out of the Squawkathon will be all of ours to de
velop further and build on. At this point in time\, the Foundation is no
t committing resources to the development of any particular idea\, but w
ill continue to assess whether our support could have significant impact
in the protection of marine birds species. A monetary prize will be awa
rded to the winning team.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDo I need to come to both days?
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBecause we have a lot to do in a short amount of time\,
we are asking participants to attend both the kick-off and the day of th
 e hackathon itself.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIs there a dress code?&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nVery informal. Wear whatever you work best in.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWill free
food and drinks be involved?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nLocal beer and local food.
