DESCRIPTION:The Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics meeting&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nRecoupling Computer Science and Computing&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA talk
and roundtable discussion&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThere is no question that hybri
d telecommunication/computing appliances like those running iOS and Andr
oid have put more open source software into the hands of users than any
other effort to date but vendors and carriers consistently choose user c
ontrol over user freedom. While many users and vendors will argue that &
quot\;people want their systems to 'just work'&quot\;\, intentional and
unintentional decoupling of the user computing experiences from the unde
rlying computer science is the norm\, despite the fact that developers a
nd systems administrators are equally lazy and &quot\;want their systems
to 'just work'&quot\;.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBecause no technical barrier exis
ts between these two experiences of a given system\, this talk will expl
ore the historic and modern systems that provide the best balance of use
r and developer experience and open up to a roundtable discussion of oth
er such systems and how to bridge these two experiences and foster compu
ter science in society.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPlease be prepared to talk about
your experiences\, particularly on platforms like Android and web framew
orks which can offer full-stack access to sources yet deliver a competit
 ive user experience.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSee you there!&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nMany will break for the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne afterwards.\n\nTags: be
 er\, linux\, networking\, open source\, unix\, bsd\, devops\, android\,
