DESCRIPTION:OctoberBest 2011 seminar of special interest &#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Green Vehicle Design and Manufacturing&#13\;\nSpeakers: Laurence Dunn\,
 Nacco Materials\; Bob Simpson\, EVDrive\; Joe Justice\, WIKISPEED&#13\;\
 n&#13\;\nDate: Wednesday\, October 5\, 2011&#13\;\nTime: 8:30 AM Registr
 ation\; 9:00 – 11:45 AM seminar&#13\;\nLocation: Tektronix Conference Ce
 nter\, 3025 SW Zworkin Ave\, Beaverton OR 97075&#13\;\nCost:	$40 &#13\;\
n&#13\;\nThis seminar features three presentations which will cover batt
eries\, drive system design\, and a novel method of manufacture for elec
tric and hybrid vehicles.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn addition\, there will be an
on-site display of vehicles from EVDrive and Wikispeed.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nR
egistration/check-in starts at 8:30 am\, with the seminar starting promp
tly at 9:00.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n“Li-Ion Is it our Mobility Future”&#13\;\nLa
urence Dunn\, Chief Engineer with Nacco Materials Handling Group will sp
eak on how advanced battery technologies are helping bring more sustaina
ble and greener technologies to the market while increasing productivity
and decreasing operational costs.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nLaurence Dunn is Chief
Engineer NMHG Inc. a Global Leader for company Innovation. He has spent
40 years in Automotive Electronics\, and the past 4 Years working on Fu
el Cell and Li-Ion Projects for Forklifts. He is a committee member for
UL 2580 “Standards for Batteries for use in Electric Vehicles”.&#13\;\n&
#13\;\n&#13\;\n“Automotive Technology - The Next Generation Drive System
s”&#13\;\nBob Simpson\, CTO of EVDrive\, will speak on how pure electric
vehicles can meet or exceed the performance of internal combustion powe
red vehicles when powered by the right batteries in the right quantity a
nd in the right location with the right secret sauce and systems integra
tion to pull it all together. This presentation will discuss the design
and development of electric vehicle drive systems. It will cover:&#13\;\
n** Battery cell technology &#13\;\n** Motor technology&#13\;\n** Power
sources and impact to grid\, &#13\;\n** Comparative cost of operation an
d service\,&#13\;\n** Solution to Range anxiety with electric vehicles&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nBob Simpson is the CTO and Drive System Engineer for EVDri
ve Inc. He also has been employed since 1977 at Tektronix as a Sr. HW De
sign Engineer. In 2008 he designed and fabricated a full performance ele
ctric conversion of a BMW 325i. Elimination of fuel use and it's emissio
ns was the goal but without sacrifice of performance OR economy. See www
 .evdrive.com for extensive build diaries.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n“Agile
Manufacturing: The WIKISPEED 100 mpg car&quot\;&#13\;\nJoe Justice\, CEO
of Seattle-based Wikispeed will speak about Wikispeed\, an “open source
 ” project\, developing vehicles using principles from modular\, lean\, a
gile software development. The gas-powered cars\, evolved from Wikispeed
's entry in the Progressive Automotive X-Prize\, are designed to be inex
pensive\, safe\, efficient and fast -- made of aluminum extrusions and s
tructural carbon fiber. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nTeam WIKISPEED entered a $10 Mil
lion competition to produce road legal 100+ mpg cars. They built the imp
ossible in three months. The WIKISPEED Team will talk about Agile practi
ces applied to enormously speed up physical manufacturing. Joe Justice l
eads WIKISPEED\, a team of 102 volunteers in 7 countries\, and walks thr
ough how their 100 MPG road car was made possible through modular design
 \, iterative development\, and Agile project management.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Joe takes a deep dive on exactly how a 100 mpg can be prototyped\, valid
ated\, and brought to market by &quot\;using less stuff&quot\; and extre
mely quickly. Joe will use the example and of the design and development
of their revolutionary 100 mpg\, gasoline powered\, four-seat car with
a target price of $17\,995.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis ground breaking work exp
ands the agile process to design and manufacturing of the car. The talk
will provide tools and take-aways for engineers and executives\, in manu
facturing and software\, looking to improve their processes. New profess
ionals and students can see examples of the value found in pairing\, pri
oritized backlog driven development\, and extreme programming\, as they
see the methodology jump from software teams to research\, manufacturing
 \, and product engineering.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJoe Justice is a Seattle-area
lean-software consultant and entreprenerd\, and a registered automotive
  manufacture since 2007. In 2010\, Joe’s X Prize team\, WIKISPEED\, tied
for 10th place in the mainstream class of the Progressive Insurance Aut
 omotive X Prize\, a $10 million challenge for 100+ MPGe automobiles. Joe
has spoken on social web application development\, project methodology\
, and agile best practices to audiences at Denver University\, Universit
y of California Berkley\, Google\, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
\, Rotary International\, and others. Joe is currently on assignment at
Zynga and CEO of WIKISPEED.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAgenda: &#13\;\nSched
