 esktops)&#13\;\n     consumed 1.5% of total US electrical consumption in
  2006.&#13\;\n     They predict a doubling to 3% of base load by 2011.  
 Our&#13\;\n     work as programmers and technologists continues this&#13
 \;\n     runaway exponential growth\, and we will be stopped by&#13\;\n 
     environmental and resource limits soon.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n     Server s
 ky is a proposal to use newly emerging solid state&#13\;\n     technolog
 ies to build large arrays of 3 gram paper-thin&#13\;\n     solar-powered
  computation satellites in 6400km Earth orbits.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n     A si
 ngle server-sat replaces 15 watts of ground-based&#13\;\n     electrical
  generation\, cooling\, and power conversion\, as&#13\;\n     well as th
 e computation and communication hardware itself.&#13\;\n     Orbital ser
 ver farms may start out as expensive as current&#13\;\n     approaches\,
  but design improvement and cheaper launch will&#13\;\n     decrease cos
 ts exponentially over time\, much as transistor&#13\;\n     cost has plu
 mmeted over the last four decades.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n     This is open tech
 nology\, responsive to public input\, and&#13\;\n     the project needs 
 volunteer software and engineering help&#13\;\n     to stay that way.  E
 ventually\, Server Sky will create&#13\;\n     thousands of open technol
 ogy jobs in the Portland area\,&#13\;\n     and permit unbounded computa
 tion growth in space\, while&#13\;\n     reducing energy demand and envi
 ronmental damage on Earth.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n     Earth can return to what 
 it is good at green and growing&#13\;\n     things while we fill space w
