DESCRIPTION:Last month\, we had a great panel discussion about the use of
facial recognition technologies\, where we looked at the accuracy of th
e technology as well as how it affects various groups of people and thei
r civil rights. Due to a number of issues surrounding the technology\, s
everal cities have banned government agencies from using facial recognit
ion\, and there's currently a similar effort at the federal level. &#13\
;\n&#13\;\nIn August\, the City of Portland will consider two bills that
ban the use of facial recognition technologies within the City. One bil
l addresses use by public agencies\, and the other addresses private use
.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHector Dominguez\, the Open Data Coordinator at Smart C
ity PDX\, within Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability\, is o
ne of the chief authors of the proposed bills and will join us this mont
h to discuss what each piece of legislation covers and how the bans\, if
approved\, will work. He'll also talk about the internal efforts to dev
elop a privacy toolkit that includes privacy impact and risk assessments
 \, guidelines\, and a Privacy Champions Network. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nLinks t
o drafts of the legislation and the City Code amendment are available on
  the meeting registration page at:&#13\;\nhttps://www.meetup.com/Portlan

nThere are a lot of fund raising strategies for your community group. As
your community grows you may need to raise funds and you might look at
utilizing the vendors in your community as funding sources.&#13\;\n&#13\
;\nIn this presentation and discussion\, we will talk about:&#13\;\n&#13
\;\n- The breadth of fundraising strategies by communities\, and typical
revenue models&#13\;\n- Considerations of legally incorporating as a 50
1c3 vs other options&#13\;\n- Identifying vendors in your community and
evaluating their financial potential&#13\;\n- Tips doing outreach to ven
dors when asking for money&#13\;\n- Understanding what vendors want in e
xchange for money\, and possible ways to balance the interests of everyo
ne&#13\;\n- Objections your vendors might have and ways to negotiate&#13
\;\n&#13\;\nBring your experience working with vendors and sponsors. Whe

DESCRIPTION:Digital and physical surveillance are at all-time highs\, and
privacy is dissipating from our society. But why should we care about p
rivacy if we have nothing to hide?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this session\, AJ R
ice will discuss how a lack of privacy affects us as individuals and as
a society. Using specific examples\, Rice will cover the direct conseque
nces of a world without privacy and also the more subtle ways an absence
of privacy undermines the rights of those who have nothing to hide. Thi
s presentation will focus specifically on why privacy matters\, and not
on what we should do about it.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBring your questions and j

DESCRIPTION:Last year\, the Smart City PDX team and Portland's Office of
Equity and Human Rights began work to create a surveillance policy for t
he City of Portland. They held several events over the course of the yea
r: some were intended to educate the local community about the policy an
d why one is needed\, while others provided an opportunity for community
members to give input on what they felt should be included in the surve
illance policy. A draft of the proposed legislation is now ready and wil
