DESCRIPTION:Let's kick off the new year with our fellow PHP Users at the
new Treehouse office! We have two awesome talks lined up for you. The ne
xt major version of PHP is HERE! Robert Parker will give us an introduct
ion to PHP 7. PHP 7 is significantly faster and ships with many new feat
ures such as strict mode\, return types and more. Despite all these big
changes the number of backwards incompatibilities are minimal. We will g
o over the new features of PHP 7 and discuss some of the backwards compa
tibility breaks so you can start using PHP 7 when it is released. Also j
oin Alena Holligan to learn how to Exploit the Brain for Fun and Profit.
Sure\, you could improve yourself or promote your project the normal wa
y\, with hard work and years of slow\, incremental progress. Or you coul
d use the brain's built-in cheat codes and hack your way to success. Pla
gued by a raft of bugs and unwanted features\, use these to your advanta
ge to teach\, learn and persuade. Tour of some of the most amusing bugs
and exploits as we interface with our brains. Food and drink will be pro
vided. Thanks to Treehouse for hosting this month's meeting!\n\nTags: me

DESCRIPTION:Presentation Summary: 10 years ago\, the world had yet to hea
r of &quot\;DevOps.&quot\; The software development landscape was cold\,
unforgiving\, and littered with power-mad systems administrators who he
ld all of the keys in your quest for success as a developer. OK\, so the
re may be a little hyperbole there. But the software development industr
y is changing rapidly\, and we've gained a lot of ground even just in th
e past decade. Take a trip down memory lane with Tommy as he explores so
me of his experiences with systems administration and software developme
nt\, and how he's learned to apply those lessons to the DevOps approach
he enables at Treehouse. &#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the Speaker: Tom
my Morgan is the Vice President of Engineering at Treehouse\, and has be
en in the software development industry for over a decade. Through his c
areer he's worked with some very interesting companies - from self-descr
ibed &quot\;lobster trap&quot\; companies (it's as bad as it sounds) you
've never heard of to top brands like Coca-Cola. As a big fan of learnin
g from your mistakes\, Tommy leans on his experiences as a developer\, s
ystem administrator\, and manager to guide process and policy across his
team of web\, mobile\, data\, and infrastructure engineers. About the
Venue: Treehouse is an online school that looks to bring affordable tech
nology education to people everywhere. We want to help people achieve th
eir dreams by giving them a helpful\, highly interactive\, and well-desi
gned education experience that lets them learn development in ways that
weren't possible (or affordable) even five years ago. As technology beco
mes more and more a part of our daily lives\, it becomes even more essen
tial for people to be able to interact with technology in a meaningful w
ay. Making that education available to everyone\, we believe\, will chan
 ge the world. https://teamtreehouse.com/ &#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAgenda:

DESCRIPTION:This is the very first meeting of the Portland Elm Group. Com
e meet other cool people! Share your interests\, questions\, ideas\, cur
iosity\, whateva. I'll introduce Elm and why people like it\, show off s
ome simple code\, and help everyone set up their environments to use Elm
. I'll have a challenge that people can work on to get a feeling for Elm
with some handrails\, too. IMPORTANT: people completely new to code\, c
 omputers\, JavaScript\, Elm\, functional programming\, and life are welc
ome. We are excited to welcome people of any age\, gender\, race\, sexua
lity\, or background. You may like to check our website for some context
about what to expect\, in case you're anxious about feeling overwhelmed
. Elm is very different from many starting programming languages\, but i
t is NOT intrinsically more difficult than anything you have already mas
tered. The hardest part of learning anything new is seeing things a diff
