    Quantified Self Conference
    through
    Ziba Design - Auditorium

What can you learn about yourself using your own data?

The Quantified Self conference is where DIY toolmakers, scientists, caregivers and patients, athletes, teachers, and everybody else interested in "self-knowledge through numbers" get together to share their projects and exchange what they'relearning about self-tracking tools and methods. This year we'll have a special focus on learning from our own data both inside and outside of the classroom. Tools that will be discussed include blood assays, home-built environmental monitors, and effective tools for emotional self-assessment. Want to build your own metabolism tracking device? Curious about the effect of circadian rhythms on cholesterol? Interested in genomics, microbiome, fitness, and diet? As always, we'll have two days of first person "show&tell" reports about self-tracking and learning in all these domains - and more.

The program is what we call a carefully curated unconference. We look at the projects and ideas proposed by everybody who registers, learn as much as we can, and then craft a series of talks and discussions reflecting the latest knowledge in the QS community. You can get a good look at the style of the meeting by watching some of the talks we've been posting from past conferences at http://quantifiedself.com/.

Join us! (And please don't forget to post something about your work in answer to the survey questions when you register.)

Ziba Talks: Designing for Digital Disruption featuring Julie Lasky

Join Ziba, a global design and innovation consultancy and Julie Lasky, former editor-in-chief of I.D., the magazine for international product design and former deputy editor of The New York Times weekly Home section to discuss the new era of digital that is upon us in everyday life.

From embracing the beauty in raw functionality, to service design on our terms, the infusion of technology into our lives has expanded the designer’s capacity to influence our overall experience. Increasingly, a consumer's digital experience directly impacts brand loyalty—and may be the only direct interaction they have with that brand. What does this mean to business and its investment in designing for the overall experience in both the digital and physical space?

Joining Julie will be Ziba's Founder/Chief Creative Officer and Founder/CEO of Citifyd, Sohrab Vossoughi, Ziba’s Interactive Design Director Todd Greco with the conversation moderated by Malia Spencer from the Portland Business Journal.

Thursday, February 2nd Doors Open: 5:30 PM Discussion: 6:00 - 7:30 PM Casual happy hour to follow.

Julie Lasky is a journalist, editor and critic best known for her writings on design and popular culture. From 2012 to 2015, she was the deputy editor of The New York Times weekly Home section, for which she wrote a monthly column on new design called "The Details." Prior to that, she was editor of Change Observer, a Rockefeller Foundation-funded channel of the critically acclaimed website Design Observer that focused on design and social innovation. From 2002 to 2009, she was editor-in-chief of I.D., the magazine of international product design. From 1998 to 2001, she edited Interiors magazine. She began her journalism career at Print, the graphic arts bimonthly.

About #zibatalks Ziba Talks is a conversational series that covers emerging design trends, disruptive ideas and provocative cultural occurrances presented to inspire the creative community of Portland, and its business and civic leaders.

Keep Portland Wired! A Tour of Portland’s Tech Community

A tour by Know Your City in conjunction with The Wild Cost: $25 general/ $20 members

Board the bus for a ride through Portland’s technology industry, including some of the major institutions our city is known for, as well as some of our emerging start ups. Get a behind-the-scenes view of leading tech innovators, and meet some of the leaders who are shaping Portland’s tech future…you’d be crazy to miss it!

We’ll start out at Portland Incubator Experiment, a start-up incubator for new, emerging tech businesses. Associated with and housed in the Widen+Kennedy building, the space canopies 8-10 start-ups at a time, helping with the early stages of creating business. We’ll hear about how they’ve created more than $1 million in venture capital and more than 400 jobs, and meet with several of the business owners.

At Second Story we’ll get a look at their innovation center for new interactive experiences. Staff will share their work in pushing the boundaries of storytelling across digital channels – including web, mobile and installations. We’ll hear a bit about their history and some of the new groundbreaking projects currently in development.

Nike+ Accelerator will provide us with a similar but different view into the world of emerging start-ups. Started just months ago, 10 teams are working with mentors to develop a variety of businesses, many around health, wellness and technology. The program is run by TechStars, a Colorado-based company that has generated more than $275 million in venture capital for clients over the last six years.

The tour ends at Free Geek, a nonprofit whose mission is to recycle technology and provide access to computers, the Internet, education, and job skills in exchange for community service. Founded in 2000, the center refurbishes more than 44,000 computers, printers and monitors a year, while recycling 601 tons of materials. We’ll take a quick tour of their thrift store, as well as learn about their hardware grants program, classes and volunteer opportunities.

    Wearables: The future is now

In early 2012, Nike introduced FuelBand and Google announced its Glass Project — two events that shined a spotlight on the growing category of Wearable Technology. In the months since, the global design and business community has exploded with speculation on the potential of embedded computing. But they’ve left many questions unanswered: How will wearable technology fit into our daily lives? Is it a passing trend, or the future of computing? Will these kinds of devices bring people closer together, or add to the distractions that battle for our attention?

What’s clear is that computers will radically transform over the next five years, from devices we carry to integrated parts of our outfits and bodies, that we use almost without thinking. It’s a shift that will transform markets, and challenge our definition of beauty. Please join us for a talk with local experts, as they discuss their challenges and successes, and explore what the future holds in this exciting field.

Lawrence and Anna Halprin and the Reinvention of Public Space

Join the Halprin Landscape Conservancy for the release of a book celebrating the world-renowned Portland fountain plazas designed by Lawrence Halprin.

Saturday, December 5, 2pm Ziba World Headquarters Auditorium, 1044 NW Ninth Avenue Admission: Free

Introduction by Portland Parks Commissioner Nick Fish

Lecture performance by Ron Blessinger, violinist, Third Angle Ensemble, with dancer/choreographers Linda K. Johnson, Tere Mathern, Cydney Wilkes, and Linda Austin

Screening of The City Dance of Lawrence and Anna Halprin - A documentary about the September 2008 performance in Halprin's Portland plazas Between 1963 and 1970, Lawrence Halprin and Associates realized the Portland Open Space Sequence: a quartet of public plazas in Portland, Oregon, that redefined the city and set a bold new precedent for urban landscape architecture. Comprised of Lovejoy Fountain, Pettygrove Park, and Ira Keller Fountain), plus the lesser-known Source Fountain, the plazas are a collage of striking concrete forms, gushing water, and alpine flora that, in their seamless mix of nature and theater, created a playful metaphorical watershed coursing through the central city.

Where the Revolution Began (Spacemaker Press, $29.95) is the story of how these plazas came to be. Born of the creative experimentation and collaboration between the late Halprin and his wife, pioneering choreographer/dancer Anna Halprin, the Portland Open Space Sequence came to life in the unlikely setting of the Portland’s first scrape-and-rebuild urban renewal project. But Halprin defied the conventions of both American urban renewal and midcentury modernism, designing the kind of inviting, exuberant public space not seen since Renaissance Rome’s Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona. The book is an outgrowth of “The City Dance of Lawrence and Anna Halprin,” a performance that took place in the plazas in September 2008 as part of PICA’s annual TBA Festival. The book’s release, the performance, and screening is a celebration of Halprin, who passed away October 25 at age 94.

For Lawrence Halprin, one of the 20th century’s most influential landscape architects, the Portland plazas were the first step in a career-long exploration of sequential works of landscape design, from the Haas Promenade in Jerusalem to the Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C. For Portland, Halprin’s work marked the beginning of a tradition of remaking the city around interactive public spaces, such as the famed Pioneer Courthouse Square. And for landscape architecture, the plazas laid the earliest foundations for the ecologically and socially responsive urbanism on the rise today.

Replete with historic photographs and Halprin’s notebook drawings, Where the Revolution Began is a historically complete document of how this pivotal moment in urban landscape history came to be, from concept to fruition.

All proceeds from sales benefit the Halprin Landscape Conservancy, a nonprofit organization devoted to educating the public and preserving the Portland Open Space Sequence.
