DESCRIPTION:OpenBSD by Bryan Linton&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOpenBSD is a free *nix
-like operating system that focuses on security\, correctness and develo
per freedom. With only two remote holes in the default install in over 1
0 years\, OpenBSD has a reputation of being one of the most secure opera
ting systems in common use.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis talk will present a basi
c overview of what OpenBSD is\,&#13\;\nand will heavily emphasize what i
ts strengths are. It will also&#13\;\ncover the various methods OpenBSD
uses to remain secure.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWith OpenBSD 5.1 arriving May 1st\
, we will also discuss some of its new features and improvements.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nMany of us will go to the The Lucky Lab Northwest Beer Hall at
 1945 NW Quimby after the presentation.\n\nTags: linux\, security\, netwo

DESCRIPTION:Lance Albertson of the Oregon State University Open Source La
b will give an introduction to the Ganeti Virtualization Management Syst
em.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGaneti is a robust cluster virtualization management
software tool. It’s built on top of existing virtualization technologies
such as Xen and KVM and other Open Source software. Its integration wit
h various technologies such as DRBD and LVM results in a cheaper High Av
ailability infrastructure and linear scaling.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis hands-
on tutorial will cover a basic overview of Ganeti\, the step-by-step ins
 tall &amp\; setup of a single-node and multi-node Ganeti cluster\, opera
ting the cluster\, and some best practices of Ganeti. Finally\, deployin
 g and using a web-based management tool called Ganeti Web Manager.&#13\;
\n&#13\;\nIf you want to participate on the hands-on portion of the talk
\, feel free to clone his vagrant-ganeti repo on github (https://github.
com/ramereth/vagrant-ganeti) prior to the meeting. We'll try and have th
e box images available on USB drives at the meeting but its always great
to have everything setup prior to the meeting and not saturate the wifi
.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nLance is the Associate Director of Operations for the O
regon State University Open Source Lab (OSL) and a Gentoo Linux Develope
 r. He joined the Gentoo Linux project in 2003 and have been involved in
managing their infrastructure and maintaining about a dozen or so packag
es in portage. Lance directs all of the hosting and development activiti
es that the OSL provides for the open source community including project
s such as Kernel.org\, Drupal\, Apache Software Foundation\, and many ma
ny more. Lance has been at the OSL since 2007.&#13\;\n\n\nTags: django\,

DESCRIPTION:Portland Linux/Unix Group Meeting&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIt's a littl
e known secret that systemd is extremely capable of starting\, controlli
ng and regulating more than just system services\, but can easily start
an entire Desktop UI. Not many people have sat down and implemented and
worked out the problems of starting an X service\, a few UI components\,
the session bus and DBus services for normal users with the mechanisms
that systemd provides.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe benefits are obvious: Systemd
provides excellent service monitoring and restarting capabilities\, prov
ides socket and DBus activation for relevant services\, and overall impr
oves desktop startup by allowing user services to start well before core
services like Xorg or wayland start. In effect\, we're saying goodbye t
o XDG autostart entirely\, and getting back reliability and scalability.
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe converted several desktop environments including Tize
n's Mobile UI\, Xfce4\, Enlightenment and more to systemd user sessions.
We &quot\;pop the hood&quot\; and take a look at the implications for s
tartup\, what's possible to further improve on the session startup and w
here we can do better.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAuke Kok is a software eng
ineer at Intel's Open Source Technology Center\, and has been attempting
to make Linux boot faster since 2007. In 2008\, he co-presented the &qu
ot\;5-second boot&quot\; with Arjan van de Ven at the first LPC. Since t
hen\, Auke has worked on further improving the Linux Core OS start seque
nce\, first for Moblin and later with MeeGo\, where we made the first sw
itch to systemd. Auke now works on Tizen\, which will heavily integrate
systemd in the Core OS. &#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAgenda:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n7

DESCRIPTION:UEFI Secure Boot and Open Source. It's not a 'general war aga
inst computation' by Vincent Zimmer\, Intel&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs 2012 platf
orm firmware embraces UEFI 2.3.1 and ACPI5.0 support\, the ability to in
teroperate with UEFI Secure Boot is imperative. This poses a unique chal
lenge for open software that may not come pre-installed on the platform.
With UEFI Secure Boot\, though\, infrastructure has been put in place t
o preserve openness\, owner choice and control in addition to mitigating
concerns of malware targeting the platform. This talk will provide a hi
story of UEFI Secure Boot\, an overview of the implementation\, deployme
nt practices\, and details on the engagement with the open source commun
ity.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nVincent Zimmer is a Principal Engineer with Intel Co

DESCRIPTION:Historically\, implementation of electronic health records in
medical offices have been problematic. Specifically\, poor implementati
on of these products is the leading cause of failure of acceptance of EH
Rs in these offices. Implementation of EHRs in the small physician offic
e remains poorly documented and this contributes to this failure rate. T
o address this need\, OEMR (The OpenEMR Non-Profit) developed an interns
hip experience with the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical E
pidemiology at Oregon Health and Science University to develop a road ma
p for converting a small physician's office that is still using paper re
cords to OpenEMR\, an open source electronic health record\, while using
open source tools to implement and document the transformation. Documen
tation was made public on the OEMR wiki (at http://www.oemr.org/wiki/Goi
ng_From_Paper_to_Electronic) as a template for future implementations. T
his presentation is an overview of the documentation completed for the w
iki. There are many paths to implementation\, but the destination is mea
ningful use of the OpenEMR system.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpecial Thanks: PLUG r

DESCRIPTION:If you haven't already signed up for the Hack tomorrow at PSU
\, we hope some details included here will entice you. To prepare our pa
rticipants for a fun and productive day\, below are details and resource
s for the Hack.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nGoals: To generate ideas are innovative
to solving environmental and sustainability\, social equity issues throu
gh utilization of software and mobile apps. Don’t forget to have some fu
n.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nIdea Generation: To start\, you should ask the follow
ing questions:&#13\;\n1) What issues you and your team would like to ta
ckle? (ie. carbon emissions reduction by buildings or vehicles\, solar p
 otential identifier\, change of personal habits\, e-waste tracking\, etc
.)&#13\;\n2) What do other similar applications exist on the market? So
metimes\, building on existing apps can resolve a more refined product.&
#13\;\n3) What is the marketability? Is it scalable?&#13\;\n &#13\;\nTh
e best project ideas are one that you are passionate about\, and have so
 me components of competition and linkage to social media.&#13\;\n &#13\;
\nFinding Data:&#13\;\nWhile you are brainstorming ideas\, you should al
so consider data availability as well. It is not the end of the world if
you don’t have data sets or APIs to mock up a prototype. Simply build y
our own datasets\, even if just a few that are enough for you to test ou
t your product.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSee the Cleanweb Hack resource guide for
APIs\, data sets\, sample projects and project ideas. (http://tinyurl.co
 m/m7a744e)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJudging Criteria:&#13\;\nAt the end of day\, y
our prototype will be scored on these criteria:&#13\;\n1) Impact on reso
urce and sustainability issues&#13\;\n2) Design and usability of prototy
pe&#13\;\n3) Feasibility and marketability&#13\;\n4) Good use of dataset
 s and APIs&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPrizes: 1st Place - $500\, 2nd Place - $250&#1
 3\;\n&#13\;\nBragging right is priceless.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nOur judges are
looking forward to your innovations!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWinston Saunders\,

 licensing by for-profit entities. Meanwhile\, many for-profit entities t
hat do use copyleft for their own software now do so in a manner that mo

13\;\n&#13\;\nWho: Michael Dexter&#13\;\nWhat: Block Storage Device Life

13\;\n&#13\;\nBlock storage has joined electricity as one of the fundame
ntal technologies on which we are completely and irrevocably dependent.
The two technologies are in fact becoming inextricable now that computer
s control virtually every electrical system from the distribution grids
on up\, and computers themselves are completely dependent on electricity
to operate. Both technologies have undergone countless innovations yet
still operate largely on their original basic principles. While high in
capacity\, fast and affordable\, the modern hardware block storage devic
e or “hard disk” operates on the same principles as the original 1956 IB
M 350 disk storage unit and most solid-state alternatives emulate hard d
isks. Beginning with the Berkeley Fast File System\, the BSD family of o
perating systems has played a key role in the evolution of general purpo
se block storage and continues this innovation with technologies like vi
 rtual block storage devices\, GEOM\, UFS2\, ZFS\, GELI\, HAST\, GEOM Jou
rnaling\, FUSE\, tmpfs and the NAND Flash framework. This paper will sur
vey the available block device options in the FreeBSD operating system a
nd explore their practical uses in modern storage architectures.&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nFreeBSD is unique in that it provides the reference platform for
the Unix File System and is now a tier one Zettabyte File System or ZFS
platform. The 10.0 release of FreeBSD is particularly unique in that it
includes in-kernel iSCSI network block device sharing\, the NAND Flash
framework\, a FUSE implementation and the bhyve hypervisor which can lev
erage and help test most FreeBSD storage technologies. The FreeBSD ports
collection also includes support for guest file systems such as ext2 an
d NTFS\, which provide new opportunities to &quot\;round trip&quot\; vir
tual and physical machines using bhyve and tools such as the iBFT iSCSI
boot framework.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFinally\, while an unprecedented block st
orage toolkit can enable extensive experimentation\, there are pragmatic
issues surrounding production storage architectures. This paper will to
uch on real world block storage solutions built with FreeBSD and its der
ivatives. These derivatives include the FreeNAS storage appliance\, whic
h provides networked block and file storage to a myriad of Unix and non-
Unix clients. Pragmatic issues surrounding verifiable data integrity inc
lude: understanding and embracing ZFS behavior and limits\, observing di
sk and partition health in addition to data integrity\, understanding th
e implications of file naming\, maintaining backups and restoring desire
d data in a timely manner. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nMany will head to the Lucky L

g/live&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe world of software development rightly demands
an emphasis on the new and the innovative -- on doing things differently
from how they’ve been done. The assumption is that newer is (almost) al
ways better. But if we look only to the present and the future\, we risk
reinventing the wheel\, failing to understand that we are all built on
tradition\, failing to learn everything that we could from the past.&#13
\;\n&#13\;\nThis talk shows how documentarians can find inspiration in t
he past\, build on it\, and move forward. It tells some of these stories
\, and shows what they meant in historical context:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n* The
pre-history and dawn of software documentation -- how technical writers
were hired\, how they worked\, what they made\, the challenges they fac
ed\, and how their solutions continue to inform the work we do today&#13
\;\n&#13\;\n* The much longer history of teaching engineers to write doc

ream: http://pdxlinux.org/live&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRust is meant to compete w
ith C and C++ in performance\, but also provide memory safety. Someone h
as written a small kernel in Rust.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRust is only attractiv
e to JavaScript / Python types when they run into a problem where memory
consumption or processor consumption is a real limiting factor. Then\,
it's much easier for them to transition into Rust than C/C++\, but Rust
gives them the performance they need.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSome Rust killer ap
 ps:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n- Mozilla's experimental browser engine\, Servo (whic
h outperforms Firefox on a single core\, and destroys it when running on
four cores)\;&#13\;\n- Tilde's Skylight profiling system for Rails apps
\, which uses Rust to handle the voluminous data produced by running app
 s:&#13\;\nhttp://www.tilde.io/skylight/&#13\;\n&#13\;\n- OpenDNS\, which
  is again using Rust to handle large amounts of data in real time:&#13\;
 \n&#13\;\nhttps://labs.opendns.com/2013/10/04/zeromq-helping-us-block-ma
licious-domains/&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAdded focus: Concurrency first in Rust&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nMultiprocessor machines are everywhere: even mid-range mob
ile devices&#13\;\nnow often have more than one processor core. But writ
ing concurrent&#13\;\ncode in C and C++ is challenging even for experien
ced developers: data&#13\;\nraces are notoriously difficult to debug\, a
nd concurrency makes&#13\;\nordinary memory bugs harder to reproduce. So
programmers usually turn&#13\;\nto concurrency as a last resort\, only
after they’ve squeezed as much&#13\;\nperformance out of their single-th
readed code as possible.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBut what if concurrency were pra
ctical as a method of “first resort?”&#13\;\nWhat if we could design ord
inary programs around the opportunities for&#13\;\nparallelism they pres
ent\, without introducing risk and making our code&#13\;\nhard to mainta
in for all but the wizards?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRust is a new systems program
ming language from Mozilla\, designed for&#13\;\nmemory safety and trust
worthy concurrency. Rust catches data races and&#13\;\nmemory errors at
compile time: you can’t forget to lock the right&#13\;\nmutex before acc
essing shared data\, nor can you modify a data&#13\;\nstructure after ha
nding it off to another thread\, nor can you free&#13\;\ndata that anoth
er thread was using\, and so on. Rust does not use&#13\;\ngarbage collec
tion\, but instead relies on a simple set of rules for&#13\;\nownership\
, moving\, and borrowing to prevent the kinds of memory errors&#13\;\nth
at plague concurrent C and C++ code. Mozilla has used Rust to&#13\;\nimp
lement an experimental browser engine named Servo\, which already&#13\;\
noutperforms Firefox’s Gecko engine on real-world web sites.&#13\;\n&#13
\;\nThis talk will demonstrate various styles of concurrent code in Rust
 :&#13\;\nmessage passing\, shared data protected by mutexes\, and lock-f
ree&#13\;\nalgorithms using atomic memory operations. We’ll show how Rus
t’s&#13\;\nownership rules\, unique among production programming languag
es\,&#13\;\nprevent data races. And we’ll show how to take responsibilit
y for&#13\;\ncorrectness yourself when the compiler is too strict\, usin
g Rust’s&#13\;\n‘unsafe’ mode.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMany will head to the Luck

DESCRIPTION:Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement&#13\;\
 n&#13\;\nWho: Sumana Harihareswara&#13\;\nWhat: HTTP Can do THAT?!&#13\;
 \nWhere: PSU\, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)&#13\;\nWhen
 : Thursday\, June 2nd\, 2016 at 7pm&#13\;\nWhy: The pursuit of technolog
 y freedom&#13\;\nStream: http://pdxlinux.org/live (PSU WiFi Permitting)&
#13\;\n&#13\;\nWeb developers who only know about GET and POST and use t
he most popular headers and response codes are missing out! Underappreci
ated verbs\, headers\, and response codes can boost your web application
's performance\, flexibility\, and testability\, and help you better app
reciate the structure of the web.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe version of the Hype
rtext Transfer Protocol you will deal with most is 1.1. As a quick refre
sher: Clients and servers talk to each other via HTTP messages (requests
and responses)\, which are clear text comprising start-lines\, headers\
 , and bodies.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMETHODS&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGET (&quot\;gimme&qu
 ot\;) and POST (&quot\;here you go&quot\;) are overwhelmingly popular\,
the Dave Matthews Band of methods. To illustrate their importance: you c
an create an API that allows the user to POST but not GET\, but that wou
ld be a terrible idea. https://github.com/brainwane/secureapi demonstrat
es this with Python 2 code using the BaseHTTPServer standard library.&#1
 3\;\n&#13\;\nUsing POST to mean &quot\;Create resource&quot\;\, &quot\;U
 pdate resource&quot\;\, and &quot\;Delete resource&quot\; is inelegant!
So why do we overload POST\, and what are the alternatives? PUT\, meanin
 g &quot\;create resource\,&quot\; is implemented throughout the HTTP 1.1
ecology and is unambiguously great\; be more careful with DELETE\, whic
h deletes a resource (as demonstrated with Python 2 code using the BaseH
TTPServer standard library and the requests library). It's also worth lo
oking into PATCH and OPTIONS for specialized use cases.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA
n exciting alternative to GET is HEAD\, which requests only the metadata
about a resource\; if the client really only needs to know whether it c
 ould GET a resource\, or wants a resource's size\, last-modified timesta
mp\, or other information available in its headers\, using HEAD instead
of GET can speed performance by more than 50%. I demonstrate this using
the requests library and the %timeit functionality in IPython.&#13\;\n&#
13\;\nAlso\, why am I both discussing good and bad ideas throughout this
talk\, and how can you tell the difference? Sometimes bad ideas are eas
y ways to understand edge cases (also\, they're funny). The &quot\;horro
r world-to-whiteboard scale&quot\; gives you my take on whether or not y
ou should try out what I'm describing.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHEADERS&#13\;\n&#1
3\;\nCall-and-response header pairs such as Last-Modified and If-Modifie
d-Since/If-Unmodified-Since allow the client to conditionally specify it
s preferences\; you can save client-side processing time\, and test your
application more thoroughly\, by knowing and using the right headers. F
or instance\, check for cache problems by using Cache-Control and ETag.
(But not all headers are useful\; for instance\, the From header is basi
cally obsoleted by more advanced analytics and by the User-Agent header.
)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe require that clients send a Host header with all req
uests\; Host works with the path specified in the start-line\, the two t
ogether forming the full address of the resource. Sometimes the host is
merely the domain name of the server\, but you can't depend on the assum
ption that the host will be obvious to all the systems between the clien
t and the server. The client might send a request to an IP address\, or
to one of several virtual hosts that act as subdomains on one host. This
level of redundancy can lead to unintended consequences\; for instance\
, by intentionally malforming the Host headers of GET requests\, spammer
s can leave links to their own sites in your access logs.&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nYou can define your own header when sending requests or responses\, and
many organizations do this\; the convention is to prepend &quot\;X-&quo
t\; to bespoke headers. It's easy to do this when hand-writing requests\
, and I'll also demonstrate how to do this in a Python web framework.&#1
 3\;\n&#13\;\nRESPONSE CODES&#13\;\n&#13\;\nResponse codes (a.k.a. status
codes) have well-specified semantics. For instance\, they come in five
numbered classes\, and the three-digit integer should be sufficient to e
xplain the response -- the &quot\;reason-phrase&quot\; (the English expl
anation) should not be a necessary data point for the client to use when
debugging. As several responses sent by real\, working web servers demo
nstrate\, if you don't respect this principle\, the results can be hilar
iously confusing.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHTTP includes useful response codes tha
t mean more specific things than &quot\;OK&quot\; or &quot\;nope&quot\;\
 ; 410 Gone\, 304 Not Modified\, and 451 Unavailable for Legal Reasons he
lp you and your users move faster\, debug\, test\, and recover from unav
ailable content.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nI demonstrate how to alter the reason-ph
rases in your web application's response codes\, using the http standard
  library in Python 3: https://gitlab.com/brainwane/http-can-do-that/&#13
 \;\n&#13\;\nFrom &quot\;don't cache this&quot\; instructions to look-bef
ore-you-leap requests to using the &quot\;Content-Disposition&quot\; hea
der to tell clients that a resource should be treated as an attachment\,
HTTP already contains an embarrassment of riches. Reading up on it give
s you both a feeling of power\, of increased capability\, and a sense of
wonder\, in discovering a new way to look at the world. What might the
web have been? What might it still be?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMany will head to
the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRi

DESCRIPTION:BarCamps are free unconferences where the people who show up
on the day of the conference decide what the conference is about. It has
been shown time and time again to produce some of the best material ava

the more planned conferences you may have been to. Essentially the entir
