Portland Perl Mongers - Open Source at Work

    Open Sourcing DBIx::Class::Events

Andrew Hewus Fresh will be giving a trial run of his TPCiP talk

While I will explain a bit about what DBIx::Class::Events does and how it works, this talk is primarily about open source contributions being driven by the folks in a company who care about them and how it is up to those people to provide the resources and knowledge to everyone else in order to create an open source culture in the workplace. As far as I know, no request to open source something has ever been denied by my employer, Grant Street Group, and while the company has always had the same "go for it" attitude, the folks writing code are only just starting to gain momentum releasing things publicly. I'll talk about showing other folks in the company the benefits of sharing code internally, how that exposed the benefits of open-source in general, and how we as a company progressed to getting DBIx::Class::Events onto the CPAN.

Mistakes Were Made: Learning From Failure - Portland Street Epistemology

Let's get together and discuss anything related to Street Epistemology (SE). The topic for November will be "Mistakes Were Made - Learning From Failure". As Dr. Peter Boghossian said, failure is an expected part of the process of learning to use Street Epistemology effectively.

We'll be looking at our mistakes in a positive light, as a beneficial tool for optimizing our technique and improving in the future. Bring your stories (or audio/video) of errors both big and small and share what you think you might have done better so we can all learn from each other. Afterwords we'll head to Deschutes Brewery.

This is a fun and casual social get-together for people who are interested in Street Epistemology. Why SE? Because beliefs that are not based on sound reasoning and evidence, including those in religion, pseudoscience, politics, and more, can occur at an alarming rate in our friends, family, community, and ourselves. While debate and presenting evidence can be effective when one is open to it, in other cases it can backfire, strengthening the belief even more (Nyhan & Reifler, Political Behavior, 2010: 32,[masked]).

Street Epistemology is an approach for having meaningful, respectful, and productive conversations that help people re-examine the processes they use to come to knowledge, become more reflective about their beliefs, and break through dogmatism.

    See https://streetepistemology.com/

We're mostly skeptics and atheists, but all are welcome and encouraged to join us.

For everyone who is planning to attend, please answer this one poll question about how familiar you are with SE: https://www.meetup.com/Portland-Street-Epistemology/polls/1230863/

This is a casual social get-together for people who are interested in Street Epistemology. We'll learn more about SE, share our successes and failures, and have fun.

    PDXFUNC - Functional Discussions

Echo Nolan will be presenting the paper "Generic Constructors and Eliminators from Descriptions: Type Theory as a Dependently Typed Internal DSL" by Tim Sheard and Larry Diehl. The authors describe a method of encoding inductive types via descriptions that are ordinary terms, rather than each inductive type adding a new set of axioms to the theory. They go on to contribute a generic eliminator function that works for any type defined in this way.

First Fridays Free Days and Five-Year Anniversary (and 200th Calagator event)

Collective Agency turned 5 years old on June 15th (first planning meeting) and August 1st (opened as our own location). A lot has happened in 5 years: we've been an experiment in workplace democracy with optional participation, making here like our ideal city or village. We've hosted more than 200 tech events open to the public listed on Calagator (more than any venue except Free Geek, Lucky Lab and New Relic), and many more non-tech events (over 1,000 paid meetings, and around 1,200 member lunches). We've won awards as a coworking place and a workplace democracy.

Come work and have conversations at Collective Agency during our First Fridays Free Days, and join an optional potluck birthday celebration lunch.

Members, come as usual, and you can bring guests, it’ll be the same for you as it is every day but with more people here.

If you RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/groups/collectiveagency/ or http://www.meetup.com/Collective-Agency-community-workplace/ or Twitter @CollectiveAgenC with the time you expect to be here, what you’ll be working on (you can include a link to a website or social media), and what you’re looking for, then that's great.

    Schedule: • 9am – Open for free • 12pm – Optional potluck lunch • 5pm – End of Open House

People here for free will have access to the big loft room, the kitchen, and restrooms, but not: conference rooms or locker storage. You can come in groups of up to 14 people. There are no age restrictions.

    PRESENTATION

Lessons Learned: City of Portland’s Move to the Cloud

Over the last few years, the City of Portland has slowly moved a variety of services to cloud providers. The most prominent move was its transition to Microsoft Office 365. Come hear about what motivates, as well as paralyzes, organizations like the City from embracing the cloud. Logan Kleier will discuss how to handle organizational bureaucracy, limited internal technical skills, and budget concerns as part of the process of moving large organizations to cloud services.

    SPEAKER

Logan Kleier is the CEO and Founder of SecondSight, a software analytics startup based in Portland. Prior to this, he was the Information Security Officer for the City of Portland where he managed policy and operational security for the City’s infrastructure and applications. He has also worked for the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) as well as several wireless and broadband startups in the DC area. Logan has a BA from Trinity University and a Masters from Georgetown.

Echo Nolan will be presenting "Haskell, the Bad Parts".

There was desire expressed last time for a Haskell talk focusing on practical work. I wrote a tiny - 103 lines - utility for setting up port forwarding last April. It's an example of a working program and I have all kinds of complaints about how you have to do things in the language.

I do love the language though.

Computer programming for non programmers, meeting for prospective students.

YOU: are interested in programming but have limited or no experience.

Perhaps you're an artist who wants to work with digital tools including Processing and Arduino.

Perhaps you're a machinist who would like to write software to direct a laser cutter or CAM system.

Maybe you want an edge for you spreadsheet macros.

Or you'd like to start a small business on the web and would like to do some of the work yourself.

The goal of this course will be to give a solid foundation in theory and practice so that you have the context to pick up and use any individual programming environment.

The goal of this meeting, is to determine a course format, length, and structure based upon student goals.

In any case, at the end you will have a software project you've created, and can show off to your friends!

    Bring:

    (1) Note taking ability.

    (2) Laptop computer, if you have one.

    (3) Food or snack to share.

    (4) Friends, anybody who you think may be interested.

    (5) This meeting is free, but if you want to enroll (and weigh in on class format) bring $5.

    (6) Adherence to this code of conduct. This class is not affiliated in any way with the Plone project, I'm just borrowing their code of conduct. https://plone.org/foundation/materials/foundation-resolutions/code-of-conduct

    Agenda:

    (1) Class format, several alternatives will be presented.

    (2) Discussion of student goals.

    (3) Discussion of time line and homework requirements.

Getting Started with EE Add-On Development Part 2

Become even more efficient by writing site-specific add-ons

One of our Eugene-based members, Eli Van Zoeren, joins us again to continue to teach us how to write/create plugins and extensions to solve your templating roadblocks. Instead of dropping into inline PHP code (messy, insecure, incompatible with certain add-ons) or using the Query module (hard to read, potentially slow), you can create a custom helper add-on for your website. Some specific topics we will cover include:

    • Getting started with EE add-on development

    • The difference between Plugins, Extensions, and Modules

    • Use plugins to write your own template tags

    • How to use Hooks to modify ExpressionEngine's default behavior

    • Creating new global variables using database queries

    • Caching data so it can be reused without additional processing overhead

Some familiarity with PHP is helpful, but not necessary.

    ——

Eli is a web developer currently living in Eugene, OR who likes his websites to be clean, direct, and functional. Which is not to say they aren't attractive and memorable as well. Eli has also written several add-ons for ExpressionEngine, such as VZ Bad Behavior, VZ Members, VZ URL Extension, and a slew of others. All of his add-ons can be downloaded from Devot:ee.

Using Stash in EE Part II featuring Paulo Elias

Stash allows you to use the template partials concept in ExpressionEngine which helps to make your code DRY and your templates efficient.

His expertise lies in ExpressionEngine, Craft, and general bulls**t, and is usually thinking of the next time he can come to Portland for his dose of hipsterism and Lardo. Domain Modeling with Neo4j

Neo4j is a powerful and expressive tool for storing, querying and manipulating data. However modeling data as graphs is quite different from modelling data under a relational database. In this talk, Michael Hunger will cover modelling business domains using graphs and show how they can be persisted and queried in Neo4j. We'll contrast this approach with the relational model, and discuss the impact on complexity, flexibility and performance.

We will also be showcasing our new tool GraphGist, and whiteboarding your particular use cases during the session. As always, beer/grub is provided by Neo4j.

*Do you want us to model your specific domain? Ping the PDX organizers and we will use your domain as an example during the meetup!*

We Thank our Venue Host – The Collective Agency

The good news is, it’s already at your fingertips and the kinds of key intelligence questions that can be answered from public Big Data repositories is only increasing. Get ready to stake your claim. Answers to the following questions are buried in petabytes of data that you have at your disposal:

    • What topics actually got traction at the competitor’s conference? • Are you losing employees to the competition? • What’s morale like at a certain company? • How is a competitor organized in terms of R&D, sales, and marketing? • How rapidly is a competitor’s product being adopted? • Who should you interview to get insights on an industry, trend, or competitor?

Find out what is Big Data all about and what can it do for you and your business. Scott Swigart, Co-Founder – Cascade Insights, informs his competitive intelligence projects with tech industry insights gained from a career that began decades ago with coding low-level UNIX hardware diagnostics and continues today with programmatic social media mining and cloud-based projects. Scott is well recognized for his contributions to the competitive intelligence community and regularly speaks at national conferences for marketing research and competitive intelligence associations. He co-chaired the Oregon SCIP chapter and co-wrote Going Beyond Google: Gathering Internet Intelligence, listed as a must-read for 2009–2010 by SCIP.

    Glass Plate Game

Inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel "The Glass Bead Game", the Glass Plate Game, is essentially a conversation in the trappings of a board game. The idea is to spark creative and interesting dialog as the players explore connections between ideas against a dynamic mosaic map. There are no winners or losers. There is no order of play. Conversation flows throughout, and the end result is an artifact of the conversation, which can, itself, become a subject of further discussion. The topic of the game begins as The Math and Science in Sci-Fi

(the meta-game). We will begin with an introduction to the Game then launch right into playing. If you can't make it on time or stay the whole time, come anyway! It's better to see you briefly than not at all. The Game can last as long as we want it to, and go in any direction. After playing, there will be time for interested parties to talk further.

Intro to Wikipedia, and open edit-a-thon

In the first hour, Pete Forsyth will give a presentation and Q&A about Wikipedia: what is it, how did it come to be, how does it work? And, what's with Oregon's special kinship with Wikipedia and all things wiki?

After the first hour will be an open "edit-a-thon" - you can pair up with experienced Wikipedians to improve any Wikipedia article you like. Some suggestions: Portland's food scene, stuff that "keeps Portland weird", Portland area businesses and startups. Or even zombies. If you have reference materials, bring them along!

Event sponsors: Wiki Strategies and Prichard Communications.

Do bring a laptop, if you possibly can! If you don't have one, that's OK -- we may have a few loaners on hand, or you can just work with somebody else who has one.

See here for more details -- and feel free to edit this page with your ideas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Portland/February_2013 (You can sign up either on Meetup.com or on this Wikipedia page).

The work is a constitutional amendment on income tax reform for Oregon 2014, because we want everybody in Oregon to have enough:

-The most basic healthcare (a place to live, food to eat, and a little money for things like clothes).

-Human understanding of tax (better trust, empathy, appreciation, courage, positive actions).

-Jobs (Oregon state government is the biggest employer. Hire at least 30,000 jobs, and treat all businesses and all humans equally).

    OWASP - How to (FLOSS)Hack

Join us for a How to (FLOSS)Hack tutorial, which will introduce several common classes of web application vulnerabilities such as XSS, SQL injection, and XML External Entities flaws. The goal of the session is to bring novice FLOSSHack participants up to speed on how to identify new vulnerabilities that are likely to appear in the target software for this week's FLOSSHack. FLOSSHack is an experimental workshop project designed to bring together those who want to learn more about "hacking" (secure programming and application penetration testing) with those who are in need of low cost or pro bono security auditing.

    Freelancer’s Bible: Journey to Portland

The Freelancer’s Bible is a collection of freelance wisdom that I hope will serve as a guide for the growing independent workforce. It’s the insights I’ve gathered on the journey I’ve taken over the last two decades – being introduced to the freelance life, becoming part of this growing community, and working to create an infrastructure to unite freelancers and empower a movement.

On Friday, Nov. 30, I will be coming to Portland as part of a conversation with freelancers around the nation in the month of November. I will be sharing insight and expertise from the book, as well as opening up a discussion about ways we can all forge stronger freelance lives through solidarity and community.

The Freelancer’s Bible is the product of the conversations, experiences, and relationships built along the way. It is a vehicle for independent workers to make freelancing a sustainable reality and show that#WeAreWhatWeNeed.

I invite you to join the conversation and hope to see you November 30th.

    Best,

"Cultural myths around income tax": Tax and Conversation weekly civics meetings

There are some cultural myths around income tax. We'll talk through frequent questions, and see whether the fact-based answers are relevant. We'll start by choosing the 3-5 most relevant questions to us in view of a constitutional amendment for Oregon in 2014 on income tax reform.

Some questions include: "Why government?" "What about rich people?" "Doesn't the tax law need to be nuanced to incentivize people to work?" "Is this income tax reform political?" "How do we know we can we trust the tax reform to be good for everyone in Oregon?" (These are all real questions I've been asked which touch on core issues where the answer is not obvious.)

What would you like to learn? What are you concerned or excited about? Areas for questions will include tax, membership, and/or this organization (at least one of each).

Agenda 6-7pm Tues Nov 13: 1. Intro who we are, what we're working on. 2. Choose three or five questions, talk through, share perspectives, learn. 3. Review what did we like, what can be better next time.

  • Why Tax Work? Tax and Conversation civics meeting

“By simplifying income tax laws for people to have more equal lives, everyone will be more comfortable, able to live more humanly.”

Our weekly Tuesday civics meetings are a structured Q&A, hosted at Collective Agency, open to the public to ask questions and share-and-learn perspectives about this membership organization and about tax in Oregon overall, and the real effects of the real numbers on people’s lives.

Many people don’t understand anything about tax in society, including myself four months ago before I started learning. Many people do. We’ll learn together. The end result will be an amendment to the Oregon constitution.

Portland G4C: Meaningful Design in Games

One way to engage social good with games is through careful consideration of meaningful design. In this presentation, Corvus Elrod highlights occurrences of meaningful game design throughout history, as well as in video games.

Please join us for this exciting discussion and meet fellow members. We also will have a brief update on the status of Portland Games for Change including upcoming events and the next steps on setting group priorities.

Corvus Elrod is a Semionaut and Play Designer. He is the co-founder of a Zakelro!, a two-person, one-poodle creative studio in Portland, OR. He is also the creator of Bhaloidam, an independently published tabletop storytelling platform.

Corvus has been designing participatory experiences for the better part of two decades, beginning with his exploration of improvisational theater. As he incorporated more and more game mechanics into his performances, he turned his attention to how game mechanics communicate meaning and began formalizing a semiotic theory of game design. He has contracted for a broad spectrum of clients, from major videogame studios and publishers--including THQ, EA, and Playdom--to installation artists and theater directors. He is also working on several small game projects in collaboration with other independent developers and artists.

  • Gaming for Social Good

As the use of video games becomes more pervasive--think Angry Birds to Farmville to Wii Fitness--it becomes useful to consider their wider impact on our lives. Are they merely useful for entertainment, or can games help create change through creativity, imagination and play? Can games be valuable for mission-based groups like non-profits, NGOs and community organizations? How can game development connect students to real-world problems?

We’ll kick off the evening with a panel discussion including speakers at the intersection of gaming and game development for education, non-profit enablement and youth outreach. Our panelists will explore how gaming and the creation of games can positively impact our local communities and wider world mission-based efforts. Following audience Q&A, everyone is welcome to continue the discussion over networking, food and soft drinks.

    PDX Open Source GIS Meeting

We meet the 4th Wednesday of every month at the Collective Agency in NW Portland (Old Town). No need to RSVP, all are welcome - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers. Beer at nearby pub to follow, probably Pints.

Two talks this month, jam-packed with mapping goodness:

When Google Maps Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade - Wm Leler - @wmleler

Google Maps has long been the choice for embedding maps on your website, or building map mashups. But Google's recent announcement that they will start charging for maps (or including ads on maps) has people looking at other options. As an added bonus, many of the alternative solutions have significant advantages over Google Maps. If you are a website owner with an embedded simple map, this talk will show you how you can dump Google Maps and switch over to other solutions in minutes (both free and paid). If you are a web designer, you'll see how you can customize maps so they will look the way you want them to look, not the way Google wants them to look. If you are a programmer building map-based webapps, you'll see how open source mapping APIs like Leaflet and Modest Maps make it faster and easier to build map mashups and have them work the way you want.

Bio - Wm is a principal engineer at Flightstats, where he draws lots of airplanes, airports, weather, and other things on maps, and a Fellow at the Banff Centre for the Arts, where he has worked with some amazing artists on web-based, virtual reality, and location-based mobile projects

    MapBox - Justin Miller - @incanus77.

Justin is all things iOS for the MapBox team. He'll be joining us again to show us what MapBox has been up to lately (and they've been busy) including their strategy in the Google Maps space, their new iOS SDK, MapBox streets layer, custom styled maps, what Artem from Mapnik is doing now that he's joined the team and what they're doing with open source in general. Something for everyone and a great follow-up to Wm's talk.

Bio - Justin brings a wealth of mobile application development experience to MapBox. He has expertise in client-side programming on the Mac, iPhone, and iPad, as well as server-side programming and administration on UNIX platforms.

Research Club Brunch #22: Coffee, comics, and cabaret!

Featured talks: Leo Daedalus - The Late Now Leo hosts the thinking mammal’s live late-night-style variety-cabaret-talk show. A considered fiasco for the avant set.

Vivian Hua In 2005, I started a publication called REDEFINE, which began with no particular focus. It grew to become a music and arts publication dedicated to covering lesser-known and independent musicians. In the past year (2011), a series of extraordinary [personal] circumstances has led to the complete thematic and conceptual overhaul of REDEFINE. The music industry is not even close to what it was in 2005, and the site's new mission, moving forward, is one that I hope will be predictive of changes to come in the industry.

Sara Mirk - Oregon History Comics In 2009, I started on what I thought would be a quick, fun educational project: Creating 10 small comic books about Oregon’s history. My friends, myself, and the majority of Portland didn’t grow up in the state, so researching and writing these comics was a way to help build understanding of our surroundings in a relevant, accessible medium. Local arts and culture nonprofit theDill Pickle Club joined on as a collaborator and over the past two years we’ve raised $2,500, hired nine local artists, and published six of the ten comics. The box set of comics is finally being released this March 5th at Powell’s!

Ezra Spier - Where Coffee Comes From Ezra has traveled far and wide, to plantations in South America and Africa, to see every step of the process of making coffee. Follow one of our favorite beverages from berries on the plants to our greedy, greedy mouths.

  • Own Collective Agency: a weekly civics meeting

This is kind of a weekly Agile meeting: what's happened, what are we working on, what's blocking us from moving forward that we'd like support or advice on? It focuses on "Collective Agency" overall, and also on people here working on their own thing.

"Collective Agency" is a cooperative group in the form of an unincorporated association, and is the name of a place.

There is a Constitution, members have voting rights, people self-organize here, there is a Coordinating Council, with the main Community Organizer term-limited, and there are community workgroups that create educational events free of charge and open to the public.

Meeting new people and being around people doing a variety of work is why 95% of people are here.

Come to the new weekly civics meeting: the second ever is January 11th. It's called "Own Collective Agency" because that's what the goal is. Responsibilities you can have, ways you can be here, actions you can do, long-term planning, things you can know (want to know the budget, not just numbers but the context of what they mean? we want to share that with you). By learning and doing, you'll support what happens here overall.

Coordinating Council members Alex, Fitz, and Emanuel will be there.

What is ownership? Fitz says about what we have here: "To do these things requires ownership." Alex says that the good meaning of ownership is "responsibility." Ownership by who? For what? What does it mean to own the equivalent of a very small city, which is a workplace? What might you want to assist with, to give advice on, to do, to own?

As we have grown from tens of people to hundreds of people, how does the structure grow to support that?

What's the catch? It's that you can own part of this: you can be responsible for this place and group-of-groups staying and growing.

Own Collective Agency: a weekly civics meeting

    Vision Planning

Do you often consider the underlying motives behind your small business or career, whether that be a website, open source project, discussion group, visual arts, nonprofit, startup, or any other kind of work? Vision planning answers the question of "why am I doing this?" and ultimately keeps a project on track. We're working together to develop phrasing for our vision plans that describes the reason we're doing whatever it is we're doing. However, instead of our previous fifteen minute, one-on-one coaching sessions, this meeting is hosted by Cheri Anderson, whose expertise on business advisement is highly sought after.

Cheri is a holistic coach for small businesses and startups as well as an executive coach for Nike. She's a familiar face here, having coached two previous sessions, and will be introducing an important, and often forgotten, concept: "What is my vision?" We will have a brief meet-and-great before Cheri is introduced to people participating for the first time. Beginning by writing down our ideas or current vision statements, Cheri will then break us into smaller groups to discuss why we're interested in our projects and where those projects are going. Cheri will be coaching the groups on how to collaborate to refine each other's statements. It'll be fun working in groups and ending up with a complete vision statement, which we will reconvene and share, everyone leaving with a greater understanding of how to build their business.

Past vision planning coaches have included: Mark Grimes (NedSpace), Catherine Poole (social services & e-textiles) and Russ Finkelstein (formerly Idealist Portland). This event is free of charge and open to the public. Professional follow-up is available.

Low key, 2 to 8 minute presentations by members here, on something you're working on and a question for feedback from people here. Our projector and screen hooked up to your computer. 30 minutes total, from 2 to 2:30pm. Mingling and feedback afterward. Open to members and visitors here.

    Presenters (will be added here):

    1. Kevin Covey. "NASA Hubble Fellow in the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University. I am working to clarify how low-mass stars, and the planets they host, form and evolve." http://www.astro.cornell.edu/~kcovey/

    2. Fitz Ryland. "I'd love to present the redesign of my website that I'm working on to see what people think of the user interface. It is a bit of an experiment in terms of layout and functionality, so it would be really nice to have some feedback. It is a portfolio site of my art and design work."

You've likely heard of Collective Agency: the place and the group-of-groups. Did you know it's a representative democracy? Want to know how that benefits you and your friends?

Come to the new weekly civics meeting: the first ever is January 4th.

Alex will start the meeting conversation by saying, "Sometimes people ask me, 'Do you own Collective Agency?' and I hate that question."

What is ownership? Fitz says about what we have here: "To do these things requires ownership." Ownership by who? What does it mean to own the equivalent of a very small city, which is a workplace? Ownership by citizens: by Coordinating Council Members, by Community Workgroup Organizers, by Volunteers ("I can be there for free? What's the catch?"), and Paid Members. We also have paid meetings, visitors, and associations and independent community organizers in Portland, all of whom sometimes become citizens.

Ownership not just by one person who hires employees and makes all the decisions, because that's the simplest way. But ownership (responsibility and autonomy, checks and balances) by each of us, within a structure called a Constitution, with a Bill of Rights called the Community Guidelines, with the workplace layout and signage, and with the website.

You might have heard that you can work here for free, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. What's the catch? It's that you can own part of this: you can be responsible for this place and group-of-groups staying and growing.

Mathematics is a powerful language used in such popular applications as The Known Universe. However, the documentation is notoriously terse.

The Mathematics User Group (MUG) will serve the Portland tech community by bridging the gap between abstract mathematical language and concrete problems that programmers come across in the coding trenches.

This first session will be for coming up with topics of interest, and for working specific problems that come up in our projects. We hope to have future sessions each 3rd Wednesday.

Getting Your Client Attraction Mojo ON!

I've known Cory Johnson for years and have watched her turn businesses and careers around. I have been so impressed with what she's been doing that I asked her to come to Portland to deliver her program to our Startup Founders meetup.

Cory Michelle Johnson is one of the most effective business and executive coaches in the country. She will be sharing with us tools and techniques for attracting all of the right elements to our businesses.

How cool is it that these tools and skills are applicable to any area of business, and life outside of our businesses?

    What you’ll leave with:

You’ll learn how to change the energy in any room to your advantage. You’ll step into BE-ing your magnetic self, anytime, anywhere. You’ll destroy and uncreate the limitations and “yeah-buts” that stand in your way. You’ll learn energy tricks to become the one in the room everyone wants to know. You’ll know exactly what to say and when to say it so that people want more of you!

This Mojo-Shop is NOT for people who…

want to play small in life and business think they know it all, yet don’t have a life they love are not interested in growth, expansion and consciousness are resigned, uninspired, cynical and like it that way don’t like to have fun are not interested in using wild and wacky techniques to change anything.

This will be one of the most powerful business events of the year, so don't miss out! Join us for networking afterward.

Registration is required for this event. You can register at http://TheThrivingEntrepreneur.com/idealclients.

    Vision Planning for the Community-Minded

Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, visual art, nonprofit startup, or any kind of work, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). We’ll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own.

Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise the one you have? Do you say things like, "I'm hoping someone will want to contribute to my project, it is for the public good after all?" Then this workshop is for you.

7-9pm Monday November 14th, but usually Third Mondays. Past coaches/consultants include: Russ Finkelstein (formerly Idealist Portland), Mark Grimes (NedSpace), Cheri Anderson (executive coach for Nike, startups, and small business owners), Cat Poole (social services and e-textiles).

Many others, from UX consultants to sculptors, will be here. Come mentor and be mentored here! Free of charge.

The main questions about your vision: What are your underlying motives? What phrasing describes the reason why you’re doing this?

If related questions come up organically, we’ll explore. These questions of vision are where groups like “Collective Agency” began.

In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what we’re working on and what we’d like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions.

Please RSVP. Plancast is best, so people can see you're coming. Email [email protected] or tweet @alexlinsker with any questions.

    Portland Data Viz #6

It’s time for another Portland Data Visualization Meetup! We’ll have three to four main presentations and networking time. The last one was in February, and we're overdue for the next one!

We usually have some conversation and networking, so feel free to bring business cards and/or let people know if you’re hiring. We won’t have a food or drink sponsor for this meeting, so feel free to bring your own snacks and things to eat! (if you’d like to sponsor, see the section at the end of this post).

This time, Collective Agency will graciously host us as their cozy coworking space (see below for the address and entrance instructions). For best results, please arrive a little before 6:30 Pm.

---Speakers for Data Viz #6--- 1. Dino Citraro of Periscopic will be presenting some new visualization work!

    1. Kevin Lynagh will give a talk on Mike Bostock's D3 library: http://mbostock.github.com/d3/ which is a declarative way to map data to DOM elements, so you can very easily make complex visualizations for the web with what you already know: HTML, SVG, and CSS.

    2. Open Source Rocket Scientist Nathan Bergey will be talking about his open source tool chain (mostly python and bender) for his recent rocket data viz, ISS-Notify, Tri-met data and more!

    3. We're looking for one more speaker! If you'd like to speak, contact me at caseorganic at gmail dot com or simply tweet @caseorganic!

---Who Should Go?--- Portland Data Viz Group is open to everyone interested in or working in the field of data visualization. This means designers, programmers, information architects, data miners, anthropologists, ect. We usually attract around 20-30 people, and you're welcome to bring guests, food and drinks to the event.

---Location and Time--- Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from 6:30–8:30pm.

---Where?--- Collective Agency 322 NW Sixth Ave (between Everett and Flanders) Suite 200 Portland, Oregon 97209

Entrance instructions: Buzz “200″ when you arrive. The phone will ring once or twice, then you’ll be buzzed up. Come on in: we'll be on the second floor. Walk on back to the main loft and you'll be welcomed in!

---Interested in Sponsoring?--- We welcome food and drink sponsors for our meetings, and if you know someone who might be a good sponsor feel free to contact me at caseorganic at gmail dot com!

---Google Group--- If you're interested in getting updates for for future meetings, simply join the the pdx-visualization Google Group! As the name implies, it is a group for Portland-area people interested in languages and techniques for visualization of data. http://groups.google.com/group/pdx-visualization.

    Glass Plate Game

Two sessions of Glass Plate Game play:

4pm-5:50pm, A session game exploring the subject of how and where technology and culture interact; an hour to mingle and discuss ideas; and 7pm-9pm in the evening an open Game.

Join us for either or both sessions. Email Dunbar Aitkens at [email protected] to RSVP for the first game, or just show up later- it’s easy to join in.

The Glass Plate Game, inspired by Hermann Hesse’s Glass Bead Game, is a conversation in the trappings of a board game: as players explore connections between ideas the game sparks creative and interesting dialog between the players. There are no winners or losers, and no set order of play. Conversation continues throughout, and anyone can make a move at any time. The end result is an artifact of the conversation that makes it easy to follow the twists and turns of the conversation.

Both sessions begin with an introduction to the game followed by a period of card creation to bring concepts from players’ own projects and interests into the game, then launch right into playing.

Come for fun, friends, and stimulating conversation.

    Vision Planning for the Community-Minded

Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community.

Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I'm hoping someone will want to contribute to my project: it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you.

Saturday, September 20th, 10am-12pm. Alex Linsker, Catherine Poole, and Russ Finkelstein will be the main facilitators and coaches of the workshop.

The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why you’re doing this?

If related questions come up organically, we’ll explore. These questions are where groups like “Collective Agency” started.

Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). We’ll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own.

In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what we’re working on and what we’d like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions.

Coaches will each bring a vision plan for something they’ve done.

This event is free of charge. Coaching/mentoring/skill-sharing will be available here in the future with both free and paid options.

Please RSVP. Plancast is best, so people can see you're coming. Email [email protected] or tweet @alexlinsker with any questions.

Glass Plate Game and First Thursday Open House

The Glass Plate Game, inspired by Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game, is essentially a conversation in the trappings of a board game. Hesse's game us alluded to as a The idea is to spark creative and interesting dialog as the players explore connections between ideas against a dynamic mosaic map. There are no winners or losers. There is no order of play. Conversation continues throughout, and anyone can make a move at any time. The end result is an artifact of the conversation. The "game board" makes it easy to follow the twists and turns of the conversation.

Co-creator Dunbar Aitkens will be visiting to help lead the session. We will begin with an introduction to the game followed by a period of idea card making to especially bring concepts from players' own projects and interests into the card deck, then launch right into playing. Stay for the 3rd hour, and we'll build Glass Plate Game sets for everyone who'd like one to take with them. The sets contain "idea cards" for composing the mosaic and wooden cubes and colored transparencies for tracking the thread of thought.

Come for fun, friends, and stimulating conversation.

Also, "Collective Agency" will be open continuously to the public, from 9am-9pm on September 1st. Regular hours are 9am-5pm, Mon-Fri.
