DESCRIPTION:Join us November 5th at 6 PM for Chris Anderson's introductio
n to the CouchDB framework. Chris is a Portland-based entrepreneur at Gr
abb.it and the co-author of an upcoming O'Reilly book on CouchDB.&#13\;\
 n&#13\;\nApache CouchDB is a distributed\, fault-tolerant and schema-fre
e document-oriented database accessible via a RESTful HTTP/JSON API. Amo
ng other features\, it provides robust\, incremental replication with bi
-directional conflict detection and resolution\, and is queryable and in
dexable using a table-oriented view engine with JavaScript acting as the
default view definition language.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nCouchDB is written in
Erlang\, but can be easily accessed from any environment that provides m
eans to make HTTP requests. There are a multitude of third-party client
libraries that make this even easier for a variety of programming langua
ges and environments.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis event is free to the public. I
n order to accommodate the appropriate number of attendees\, please rsvp
to: thomas@opensourcery.com.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe event takes place at Op
enSourcery: 711 SE Ankeny (on Ankeny and SE 7th\, one block south of Bur

half-hour version of his DrupalCon DC Presentation\, Drupal Beyond the
 Web.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nModules 101&#13\;\nEach meeting\, we want to feature
one or two brief presentations (no more than 15 minutes\, including que
stions)\, highlighting an optional core or contributed module\, what it'
s good for\, and any special considerations or tricky configuration issu
es it has. The idea is to introduce people who are new to Drupal\, as we
ll as experienced Drupal users\, to solid and useful drupal add-ons. If
you're interested in presenting this month\, let us know which module by
  replying.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWorkflow\, Actions\, and Triggers&#13\;\nMelis
sa Anderson will present a brief summary of a site using Workflow\, Work
flow Required Fields\, Actions\, and Triggers to create complex electron

DESCRIPTION:Just a friendly reminder that this WEDNESDAY (August 11) is t
he date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting. What's Drupa
l\, you ask? It's a PHP-based content management system that helps you
build the best websites in the world!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe're super excited
for this meeting.... We've got two awesome presentations on the agenda:
&#13\;\n&#13\;\n1. &quot\;Janrain Engage: Connecting Drupal with the So
cial Web&quot\; presented by Brian McGinnis\, Forest Basford &amp\; Larr
y Drebes (Janrain team members)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nNeed to quickly connect y
our Drupal website to the social web? Janrain Engage (formerly RPX) may
be just what the doctor (or developer!) ordered. Key team members from
Portland-based Janrain will be here to discuss their Janrain Engage ser
vice and how it empowers your site visitors to sign-in with their existi
 ng accounts on Facebook\, Google\, Twitter\, Yahoo!\, MySpace\, AOL\, or
other networks\, and then simultaneously publish user comments\, review
s or other activities from your site to multiple networks. In particula
r\, the Janrain team will address the current state of the Janrain Engag
e Drupal module (http://drupal.org/project/rpx )\, ongoing efforts to po
rt the module to Drupal 7\, and the latest roadmap for future module enh
ancements--plus important insights into how you can best leverage the po
wer of third-party social networks. It's also a great opportunity to le
arn how local Drupal developers can get involved.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n2. &quo
t\;Git for Drupal (Part II\, Advanced Git)&quot\; presented by Michael S
chwern&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAt last month's meeting\, local git expert Michael
Schwern did a great job introducing us to git--even demonstrating for u
s (with tinker toys!) git's underlying simplicity and elegance of implem
entation. Now it's time to kick things up a notch by going beyond the t
heoretical to the practical: In this more advanced presentation\, Micha
el will delve deeper into essential git commands--including how to best
 create repositories\, add files\, clone\, commit\, fork\, branch\, stash
\, and merge. Because a Drupal project has some special considerations
that other projects don’t\, he'll cover some important key action steps
(such as using remote vendor branches to track Drupal core and modules\,
leveraging the benefits of github.com\, and merging in your local patch
es). We'll also open up the discussion to experienced git users in the
audience who will offer their insights into best practices for using git
with Drupal. With Drupal.org switching from CVS to git\, now is the ti
me to embrace version control in your projects and become a power git us
 er!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFinally\, here are the meeting details:&#13\;\n&#13\;
 \nDate: Wednesday\, August 11&#13\;\nTime: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the m
eeting\, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks)&#13\;\nLocation: OpenSourcery

;A Case Study in Drupal 7: Care Network by Elite Care&quot\; presented
by Manuel Mejia&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWant to leverage the power of Drupal to a
ddress your own specific niche industry or market? Learn how this can b
 e accomplished by examining a real-world case study of the &quot\;Care N
etwork&quot\;—a Drupal distribution that assists staff and family member
s in creating &quot\;Communities of Care&quot\; for elderly and disabled
people. Built on Drupal 7\, the Care Network helps provision services\
 , monitor community residents\, and facilitate social interaction.&#13\;
\n&#13\;\nIn particular\, Manuel will discuss unique features of the pro
ject including real-time location tracking of all individuals on campus\
, programable alerts using a wide array of sensors\, web enabled recordi
ng of daily notes and services\, and touch screen monitors used to input
and display this information. He'll also touch upon the strengths of D
rupal as an application platform and how anyone can extend Drupal 7 core
and contributed modules to fit their unique project requirements and ne
 eds.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n2. &quot\;Building a Social Network in Drupal&quot\;
presented by Ben Kaplan&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHave you ever wanted to build yo
ur own social network? Or maybe add some cool social networking feature
s to your existing website? In this presentation\, Ben will demo some o
f the latest features of the User Relationships (http://drupal.org/proje
 ct/user_relationships) and Private Message (http://drupal.org/project/pr
ivatemsg) modules—two modules he's worked on that allow you to replicate
many features of popular social networks.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAnd what if yo
u also want to leverage the power of other third-party social networks l
ike Facebook\, Twitter\, or MySpace? Ben will demo the newest features
of the Janrain Engage (http://drupal.org/project/rpx) module\, including
the ability to authenticate with other social networks\, map user data
from these networks\, share content simultaneously across networks\, and
integrate with popular Drupal modules like Rules and Views.&#13\;\n&#13

m many of the techniques and technologies Aaron will be discussing. The
talk will be relatively technical in nature (there will even be a bit of

essary to make location and maps work well together in Drupal. Katrin wi
ll discuss some of the things she's learned from her work and we'll open

problems with implementing location and maps in Drupal.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nF

DESCRIPTION:Ryan Alsett is presenting at this month's user group meeting\
, and it looks awesome!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRyan has built a system that allo
ws attendees to launch a remote desktop session complete with all tools
needed to debug a native Drupal instance. In other words\, bring your la
ptops: we're going to debug drupal at the touch of a button\, no ugly co
nfiguration or installation involved. We're going to walk through the Dr
upal 7 bootstrap and watch as each part falls into place. Ryan is also g
oing to show us some simple approaches to debugging our own projects.&#1
 3\;\n&#13\;\nSo\, to recap: Wednesday\, 6pm\, OpenSourcery. Bring your l
aptops and enough battery for about 1.5 hours. This session is going to
go about 30-45 minutes longer than normal due to all the awesome we're t
rying to cram in. See you there!&#13\;\n&#13\;\n\n\nImported from: http:

DESCRIPTION:This crazy Portland heatwave must be getting to me\, because
we're totally mixing things up for the July Drupal user group!&#13\;\n&#
13\;\n1. We've got free pizza thanks to the fine folks at Lullabot &amp\
; Drupalize.me and free beer &amp\; drinks thanks to OpenSourcery. So w
e'll start off the meetup with 30 minutes of socializing and eating (and
even some pinballing!). If you or your company would like to sponsor p
izza for future DUGs\, drop a comment below.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n2. No presen
ters at this months meetup. We'll be breaking up into teams and competin
g for 1 hour to make the most awesome\, fun\, random Drupal site using t
he mystery set of modules provided. Each site will need building\, codin
g and theming of all levels in order to win\, so everyone from the n00be
st-of-sitebuilders to the most experienced Drupal core contributor can h
elp their team.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n3. I know that fame and karma are pretty
big motivators in the Drupal community\, but in case those aren't enough
\, we'll also have prizes for the winners. The OReilly people have donat
ed a 3 day pass to OSCon that we'll be giving away along with some other
goodies.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSo remember to bring a laptop and come hungry..
. for pizza and to win!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe'll still be heading to the Luc
ky Lab NW on Quimby &amp\; 19th after the meetup for continued socializi
 ng and revelry.\n\nTags: meetup\, drupal\n\nImported from: http://calaga

in a facilitated discussion about how each organization might use the so

DESCRIPTION:Learn about the ways nonprofits and civic organizations are u
sing mobile tools to communicate with supporters\, strengthen community
engagement\, and support activism on the go. \nWe'll cover a number of d
ifferent tips and tools for mobile\, including examples of specific apps
\, using text messaging to support your cause\, connecting in-person eve
nts to social media through mobile devices\, and mobile uses for nonprof
it websites. We'll talk about mobile tools for all kinds of nonprofits\,
from civic organizations to activist groups to arts programs.\nStop by
and ask questions -- or offer your own wisdom! \nPRESENTATIONS: \nIn Jul
y 2012\, 211info -- the nonprofit that runs Oregon and Southwest Washing
ton's free service for connecting people to social services -- launched
two-way SMS/texting to accompany their phone and web services. It was am
ong one of the first in the nation among 2-1-1 organizations (there are
 2-1-1 organizations in every U.S. state\, like 9-1-1). And 211info becam
e one of the first to use two-way texting in social services in Oregon.
The early results have been fascinating. Learn how and why low-income pe
ople use texting vs. the phone or web. Understand how to staff such a se
rvice. And benefit from lessons learned during this one-year program's e
volution.\nCel.ly's mission is to support messages that build movements\
, inspire learning\, level playing fields and promote free speech. Celly
allows you to create a mobile social network that works with any mobile
phone or device. Members can join instantly with one text and exchange
group messages\, polls\, reminders\, and web alerts. Celly creates netwo
rks where existing social networks dont work. At rallies\, meetings\, an
d events\, Celly provides the quickest way to form a group that everyone
can join. In schools\, students and teachers can communicate freely wit
h Celly while keeping phone numbers private. For organizations like city
  governments\, businesses\, and neighborhoods\, each bureau\, office\, o
r block can communicate internally using private cells.\nAnd a third pre
senter to be announced. \nStop by for discussion\, networking with the n
 onprofit tech crowd\, and refreshments! \nPRESENTERS: \nMatt Kinshella\,
Online Services and Communications Director at 211info\nMatt Kinshella
