e mid-1990s\, voice-over-IP products and services have mainly attempted
to mimic the &quot\;black phone&quot\; of decades past\, providing cheap
er basic phone service. However\, VoIP has the potential to significant

13\;\nDeveloping Requirements for Legacy Systems presented by Bill Baker
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbstract:&#13\;\nMany legacy systems were created withou
t documented requirements. Over the years\, changes were made\, often wi
thout adequate documentation. Software quality suffers as the system bec
omes more and more complex. This presentation will provide a case study
of bringing requirements management and other related process improvemen
ts to a legacy software product — one which has been successful for over
twenty years.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA cross-functional team of management unde
rtook a project to improve significantly the processes related to requir
ements. This presentation describes the lessons learned while undertakin
g this project. Among these are:&#13\;\n• A good implementation start is
essential. Outside consultants are useful. Fully involve all stakeholde
rs.&#13\;\n• Different audiences have different needs. Find effective wa
ys to communicate to each audience.&#13\;\n• Be pragmatic when choosing
what requirements to write and how much effort to put into describing th
e current system.&#13\;\n• Leverage tool adoption to make changes that a
re more general to the software development process.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAuth
or Bio:&#13\;\nBill Baker is a software development manager at Sage in B
eaverton Oregon. He has been involved in software development\, project
management\, and process improvement for a number of years. While at Har
land Financial Solutions\, Bill led the improvements outlined in this pa
per. Bill has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Washington State Un
iversity and an excessive collection of other degrees from Washington St

DESCRIPTION:Jim Isaak\, IEEE Computer Society President\, will share his
experiences and research on the benefits of professional involvement out
side of work.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nProfessional activities outside of work pro
vide opportunities and benefits for engineers and their employers that a
re not fully appreciated for their positive impact on careers and contri
bution to their employer.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nInvolvement in professional act
ivities allows individuals to develop skills and expertise that enables
them to leverage their technical skills. Helping organize meetings\, wit
h program planning or peer review\, chairing committees or being elected
to the Board of Directors provides opportunities to learn and develop a
robust professional network. Volunteering develops problem solving\, te
am work and leadership skills at a minimal cost. Innovation is enhanced
by exposure to new and complementary technologies and professional relat
ionships that would not otherwise occur.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJohn Hagel\, not
ed business writer and management consultant\, summarizes the benefits o
f social capital and social networks: “… the focus of value creation is
effective participation in knowledge flows\, which are constantly being
renewed. Finding ways to connect with people and institutions possessing
new knowledge becomes increasingly important… The more your company or
country can connect with relevant and diverse sources to create new know
ledge\, the more it will thrive. And if you don’t\, others will.”&#13\;\

on-line communities.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJim is the 2010 IEEE Computer Societ

ess\, and Cucumber have revolutionized development and brought the idea
of acceptance-level testing and &quot\;Outside-in-development&quot\; to
a whole community of developers\, testers and product owners. But can we
take the idea of acceptance testing to another level and test things ot
her than the &quot\;correctness&quot\; of our software? What if we could
also specify and test the quality of interaction in our applications? W
hat if we could involve a whole other community of people\, interaction
designers and user experience professionals\, in not just the ideation o
f our products\, but the actual execution of the software itself? In bey
ond acceptance testing\, we'll look into who could be writing acceptance
tests and all the things that we could be testing that most of us curre
 ntly aren't doing.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n &#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker Bio&#13\;\n&#
