Wearables: The future is now
Ziba Design - Auditorium

In early 2012, Nike introduced FuelBand and Google announced its Glass Project — two events that shined a spotlight on the growing category of Wearable Technology. In the months since, the global design and business community has exploded with speculation on the potential of embedded computing. But they’ve left many questions unanswered: How will wearable technology fit into our daily lives? Is it a passing trend, or the future of computing? Will these kinds of devices bring people closer together, or add to the distractions that battle for our attention?

What’s clear is that computers will radically transform over the next five years, from devices we carry to integrated parts of our outfits and bodies, that we use almost without thinking. It’s a shift that will transform markets, and challenge our definition of beauty. Please join us for a talk with local experts, as they discuss their challenges and successes, and explore what the future holds in this exciting field.

To save your seat, please register for this event on Eventbrite

Wearables Showcase
Cerulean Skies Winery

We all seem to have our little niches in this group, so how about a show-and-tell? Bring in your wearable devices, be it Google Glass, Nike Fuelband, or a hearing aid. There are so many categories of wearable computers, it'd be useful to see them all. If you've written some software for these devices, show that off too. So much the better.

Join us even if you aren't wearing, it's a good time to play around.

Google Glass versus the COMPETITION
Cerulean Skies Winery

Google Glass wasn't actually the first smart glasses / smart eyewear device, but Google certainly popularized the concept by focusing on consumer uses combined with a creative marketing campaign. At this month's Google Glass / Wearables meetup, we're going to look at Google's competitors. We'll have a presentation and discussion that covers the following: - What smart eyewear devices are available now? - What devices are coming later this year? - How do the features of these devices compare to Google Glass? - What are the price points? (Prices vary wildly!)

Wearables: Show and Tell and Hack
Cerulean Skies Winery

Since the coolest part about wearables is playing with new ones, let's have another show and tell! Glass will be present (of course), but so are some weirder ones. I'll be showing off Myo (armband), Mimo (smart onesie for babies), and Gear (smartwatch). I know some of us are avid wearable collectors, so bring them all! If you don't have any, come anyway and take a look at the future cyborg society.

Revolution/Evolution
Cerulean Skies Winery

2014 was a year of wearables, launches, failures, and experimentation. It was a classic technology revolution year. But new tech isn't about next year tech, it's about last year's tech perfected. Perfecting revolutions requires an act of evolution, and the next year or two will be rife with it.

Let's look at the revolution of new wearable successes of the previous year (quantitative self, smart watches) and wearables that require more evolution in the coming years (Google Glass, smart clothes) for mainstream success. What can we do to help evolve this space?

Quantified Self Conference
through Ziba Design - Auditorium

What can you learn about yourself using your own data?

The Quantified Self conference is where DIY toolmakers, scientists, caregivers and patients, athletes, teachers, and everybody else interested in "self-knowledge through numbers" get together to share their projects and exchange what they'relearning about self-tracking tools and methods. This year we'll have a special focus on learning from our own data both inside and outside of the classroom. Tools that will be discussed include blood assays, home-built environmental monitors, and effective tools for emotional self-assessment. Want to build your own metabolism tracking device? Curious about the effect of circadian rhythms on cholesterol? Interested in genomics, microbiome, fitness, and diet? As always, we'll have two days of first person "show&tell" reports about self-tracking and learning in all these domains - and more.

The program is what we call a carefully curated unconference. We look at the projects and ideas proposed by everybody who registers, learn as much as we can, and then craft a series of talks and discussions reflecting the latest knowledge in the QS community. You can get a good look at the style of the meeting by watching some of the talks we've been posting from past conferences at http://quantifiedself.com/.

Join us! (And please don't forget to post something about your work in answer to the survey questions when you register.)
