Personal Telco Project Birthday and New Node Work Party
16475 SW Cynthia Street, Beaverton Oregon

Come celebrate Personal Telco's 10th birthday, but plugging in another node!

http://www.personaltelco.net/~russell/the-beginning.txt

Ten years ago to the day, Adam Shand, inspired by a slashdot article on Consume.net in London, wrote a message to the Portland Linux Users Group mailing list. That message got Personal Telco off the ground, and it's been flying (sometimes eating some pine cones) ever since. Come help it gain some more altitude and soar with you into the future!

We'll be plugging in a new rooftop node out in the depths of Beaverton at about 12 noon tomorrow. It shouldn't take too long, so don't be too late or we'll be all done when you get there.

Where: 16475 SW Cynthia Street, Beaverton OR 97007

When: Noon, Sunday, November 28, 2010 until 1 or 2pm

We are going to be attaching another of the Ubiquiti Bullet M2HP's to a 5 foot mast on the roof, attached to a WgtCab inside. Come join the fun, watch, learn, participate!

Ask not what free wifi can do for you, ask what you can do for free wifi!

Open Source Bridge Worksprint
Mozilla Portland Office

Help us get ready for the 2015 conference by attending a Hackathon for Open Source Bridge. We'll be working on outreach, coding, documentation, and more: https://github.com/osbridge/planning/issues?q=is%3Aopen.

This is the first of several hackathons. If this one doesn't work for you, keep your eyes peeled for the next one, or fill out the survey here http://opensourcebridge.org/get-involved/ to be alerted about future volunteer opportunities.

Tasks you can help with:

  • outreach
    • look at the sponsorship prospectus (http://opensourcebridge.org/sponsors/sponsorship/ ), think of communities, organizations, companies you have connections to, and send them personal emails asking them to sponsor OSB
    • think of awesome diverse speakers you'd love to see talks from at OSB 2015, email them requesting a talk proposal & telling them to watch for the CfP in January
  • coding
    • wiki maintenance
    • OpenConferenceWare improvements (see github.com/osbridge/openconferenceware/issues), such as adding a field for YouTube links
    • talk to Reid about helping with server deployment stuff (using Chef)
  • documentation
    • help transfer notes and tasks from Etherpad and people's minds to GitHub
    • update notes on the Open Source Bridge 2014 wiki

Sign up here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1mtYWuIfRedK25LJBWm6h4ml7rozAqKdDtNDD6LkUk0o/viewform

What is Startup Weekend Access? A crash course for those curious about entrepreneurship! You’re invited to attend Startup Weekend Access, a Startup Weekend focused on making entrepreneurship more accessible to everyone. Our mission is to create an environment where anyone can innovate together. We're focusing on accessibility to provide better access for people with disabilities and fluid collaboration amongst every participant. An appropriate accessible environment with the necessary auxiliary aids support services will be provided!

Everyone is welcome, and we’d love you to join us!

What’s Startup Weekend? Startup Weekend’s a 54-hour event where aspiring entrepreneurs, developers, designers, marketers, product managers, and entrepreneurs of all abilities come together to share startup ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups. Essentially, it’s a crash course in entrepreneurship that lets you experience what it’s really like to build and launch a startup.

Whether you have an idea for a new mobile app that will make your life easier or just want to learn more about entrepreneurship, we encourage you to attend.

Why? The statistics are clear, people with disabilities are not only less likely to be employed, but also less likely to pursue entrepreneurship. We hope that Startup Weekend Access will ignite your entrepreneurial spark!

Open Source Bridge Work Sprint
Ristretto Roasters (N Williams)

A few of us are getting together to do work sprinting for Open Source Bridge. It's a beautiful day, so our plan is to occupy the patio at http://ristrettoroasters.com - Ristretto (3808 N Williams Ave) until my battery runs out, and then enjoy a pint at the http://www.newoldlompoc.com/5thquadrant_home.html - Fifth Quadrant in the early afternoon.

I'll head over to Ristretto at 11am. Come join us if you'd like to work on a few things for the conference, or if you'd just like to hang out on this fine day. We'll be working on sponsorship-related things, checking over the schedule, writing blog posts about talks we're really looking forward to seeing, and shoring up details for the Hacker Lounge, parties, and generally fun stuff around the conference.

Leslie Hawthorn (formerly program manager for Google Summer of Code), and a few people from the OSU Open Source Lab are also coming out today.

We hope you're having a lovely day and hope to see you!

Personal Telco Project Weekly Meeting

It's also a group of volunteers who want this network to grow. We believe internet access should be available, fair, and uncensored. Personal Telco Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in PDX.

Whether you're a technology wizard or technically incompetent, volunteering with us is a great way to learn something new, enjoy teaching others, or use your skills to do something useful!
