3rd Workshop on I/O Virtualization (WIOV '11)
Portland Marriott (Downtown)

Join us in Portland, OR, on June 14, 2011, for the 3rd Workshop on I/O Virtualization. Virtualization technology has grown beyond server systems to include desktops, notebooks, and even mobile devices. The rich settings in which virtualized systems are used range from cloud computing infrastructures requiring access to high-end I/O devices like GPUs and networks to the many devices present in embedded and mobile systems. While I/O systems have a long history of using abstraction to shield applications from the intricacies of devices and storage systems, the WIOV '11 workshop's focus is on the interplay of I/O with virtualization and cloud technologies. Our goal is to provide a forum to discuss the impact and challenges of I/O virtualization along multiple dimensions.

PLUG: The Ganeti Virtualization Management System
PSU Maseeh Engineering Building

Lance Albertson of the Oregon State University Open Source Lab will give an introduction to the Ganeti Virtualization Management System.

Ganeti is a robust cluster virtualization management software tool. It’s built on top of existing virtualization technologies such as Xen and KVM and other Open Source software. Its integration with various technologies such as DRBD and LVM results in a cheaper High Availability infrastructure and linear scaling.

This hands-on tutorial will cover a basic overview of Ganeti, the step-by-step install & setup of a single-node and multi-node Ganeti cluster, operating the cluster, and some best practices of Ganeti. Finally, deploying and using a web-based management tool called Ganeti Web Manager.

If you want to participate on the hands-on portion of the talk, feel free to clone his vagrant-ganeti repo on github (https://github.com/ramereth/vagrant-ganeti) prior to the meeting. We'll try and have the box images available on USB drives at the meeting but its always great to have everything setup prior to the meeting and not saturate the wifi.

Lance is the Associate Director of Operations for the Oregon State University Open Source Lab (OSL) and a Gentoo Linux Developer. He joined the Gentoo Linux project in 2003 and have been involved in managing their infrastructure and maintaining about a dozen or so packages in portage. Lance directs all of the hosting and development activities that the OSL provides for the open source community including projects such as Kernel.org, Drupal, Apache Software Foundation, and many many more. Lance has been at the OSL since 2007.

Beers with Engineers
10 Barrel

A monthly gathering for Portland area tech junkies. More specifically, those focused on data, emerging technology, and general IT topics. Industry vets, IT pros, nerds, geeks, tech philosoraptors, whatever.... Whether 5 or 50 this is an awesome opportunity to get together and talk shop, learn from peers, or just have some beers and a good time.

No management, No selling, No recruiting, No problems. Talking to people about your product(s) or career networking is fine but people "leeching" on the attendance isn't cool so don't do it. Industry folks with expense cards typically cover festivities but this isn't a "sponsored" event and we don't intend to turn BwE into "powerpoint parties". Venue will be dynamic alternating between locations and if group size demands we'll book a location to support.

If you're new to the group or haven't been out in a while we're a pretty dynamic crowd and always have a lot of fun.

CNPDX August: Clear Containers
Cloudability

Topic: Clear Containers

Speakers: Manohar Castelino and Samuel Ortiz, Intel

IMPORTANT: Due to limited venue capacity, you MUST RSVP via Meetup for this event (see below if you don't use Meetup).

Containers allow us to deploy, ship and run the same application everywhere in a fast and distributed fashion. They are a foundational technology for the cloud where they define a brave new virtualized world for users, developers and administrators. With containers usage rising, the cloud ecosystem is more and more fragmented. Cloud builders need to choose between legacy, secure, long term running virtual machines and new, fast and easy to deploy containers.

Clear Containers close that gap by providing hardware virtualized containers. With containers actually running within virtual machines, Clear Containers combine container flexibility with hardware isolation. Here we will present how we managed to drastically reduce virtual machine boot times and memory footprint in order to reach container customers expectations for server density and application sub 50 ms startup time. We will also show how this technology flawlessly integrates with the main container runtimes for Linux: Docker and Rkt.

(if you don't use meetup, RSVP by emailing jberkus -at- redhat.com)

Docker Portland, OR - Habitat - Automation that travels with your applications
New Relic

One of the dreams of development is to build a software package once, then be able to deploy it anywhere. Come to this talk to learn how to create software packages that run (almost) anywhere. You will see how the same application can be run on bare metal, on a VM, or in a container - with everything needed to automate that application already built into the package itself. This even works with a mixed infrastructure - metal for your static compute heavy loads, vms for your persistent data stores, and ephemeral short lived containers for your applications managed by Kubernetes or other container scheduling services.

Agenda:

6:00 - Welcome, networking, and food

6:30 - Nell Shamrell-Harrington - "Habitat"

Come to this talk to learn how to build and deploy Habitat packages with the intelligence to self organize into topologies, no central orchestrator needed. Learn how the dream of platform agnostic and self organizing packages is fulfilled today and where it will evolve in the future.

CNPDX April: Container Security & KataContainers
Puppet

This event is listed on Meetup, please RSVP there if you can: https://www.meetup.com/Cloud-Native-PDX/events/249368520/

First, Chris Foster will share his tips for Security Docker on the Cheap. Better Docker security doesn't have to use expensive tools to achieve. Following a few security practices and using DE built-in features, along with some free, open source tools, can significantly raise the standard. We'll take a look at some things that can bring higher security without breaking the budget.

Next, Eric Ernst will demo KataContainers, a way to combine hardware virtualization with Kubernetes containers for more isolated, secure services without sacrificing startup times. In this talk he'll provide some background on the Kata Containers project and describe how Kata Containers works with CRI-O and Kubernetes. Then, he'll walk you through creating a K8S configuration which uses a mix of runc and Kata containers to secure workloads with varying levels of trust.

Details:
Take yourself back to 1998, when the first websites were being built. What tool did they use? For many it was a tool like Dreamweaver: expensive, complex, on-premise software. Fast forward to 2018. What do people use now? Tools like Wordpress, Wix, Weebly and Shopify. These tools are cloud-based, pay-as-you-go, and simple yet powerful. Content creation for the 3D web (including AR and VR) is high friction today. Businesses have devices and problems to solve but the content creation tools feel like we’re stuck in the 90’s.

Kyle Roche, GM of AR/VR at Amazon Web Services, will discuss how AWS leverages their cloud offerings to simplify content creation for the 3D web. Amazon Sumerian allows non-3D experts to create AR and VR content using only a web browser. Content can be easily published to end-users who then decide how they want to consume the experience. Learn how you can develop dynamic, immersive customer engagements that can experienced via advertising signage, in-store retail displays, websites, mobile devices, or VR headsets. With Sumerian, you can build once and publish widely.
