(Unconference) Evolving Virtual Teams
Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC)

Generally acknowledged best practices for software development strongly favor co-location, but with mergers, acquisitions, outsourcing, and off-shoring the co-located team is becoming an endangered species. Teams now are commonly project-based and geographically distributed. How can we work effectively with team members in different physical locations?

Learn from key open source leaders that with the help of virtual teams produce some of the highest quality, most widely used software today. Come prepared to speak your mind, share your experience, listen and learn about working in a virtual team. If you are involved anywhere in the software development lifecycle, this event is for you.

What is an Unconference?

An Unconference is the inverse of a conference, in that there’s no predetermined, pre-set schedule, agenda, or speaker lineup. Utilizing the concept of OpenSpace, this unconference is the coming together of participants, with no predetermined agenda or program, to have an open discussion and share insight in a place where experts and beginners are equal. You won't be lectured at, rather you'll leave with a better understanding of a topic and the satisfaction of being heard outside Q&A time.

The OpenSpace methodology is carefully designed to elicit maximum involvement and creativity in a constructive atmosphere. It is also highly flexible so that the content is entirely determined by you -- the participants. This is not to suggest that the conference will not have content or outcomes, for there certainly will be both. Achievement in the meeting will be totally dependent upon individual and collective responsibility to make it happen. The content is what each person shares, and the outcome is what we will all create. The event will be inventive, creative, productive and full of surprises.

Capacity: 160 attendees

Audience: From executives whom are concerned with productivity, quality and cost management to product owners, analysts, developers, designers, and testers all who are attempting to share a single thought and build upon it.

Agile Open Northwest 2010
through Seattle Center - Northwest Rooms

Announcing Agile Open Northwest 2010! This Agile Open Space event will be held February 9th and 10th, 2010, in the Seattle Center Northwest Rooms. Please see http://www.agileopennorthwest.org for registration information and further details.

We invite you to our fourth annual Agile Open Northwest conference. Alternating each year between Portland and Seattle, AONW conferences bring together practicing members of the Northwest Agile communities to explore the latest developments in agile software development. We held our third annual event last year in Portland and enjoyed another great success. Registration is $125.00 for both days, including light breakfast and lunch. This low-cost regional conference is a great opportunity to connect with the local agile community, experts and novices alike.

Please join us this year as we host 125 experienced, collaborative, committed agile practitioners from the Northwest U.S. (and beyond) in tackling the issues around our recurring theme "Agile for Real." As in past years, attendance is limited to a predetermined number in order retain the many advantages a small conference has to offer.

Here is a comment from a previous attendee:

"These two-day Agile Open Northwest conferences are an extremely good value. ..[Y]ou learn directly from practitioners in the agile community what works and what doesn't. I attended the first two of these conferences, they were stunningly good... loads of practical, useful stuff and stimulating discussions." -- Ian Savage, PNSQC Program Chair

More information can be found at http://www.agileopennorthwest.org. Registration is open now. We look forward to seeing you there.

Agile Testing Open Northwest
World Trade Center

Sponsored by AgilePDX, Agile Open Northwest, TAO QA & Dev Forums, PNSQC:

"Agile Testing: How do WE Make it Work?"

As our organizations move toward "Agile” for developing software, we all face the challenge of understanding how to adapt our former roles and ways of working to new work roles and processes. How do we ensure the continued value of testing?

Join us in Open Space to share your questions, challenges, strategies, success stories, and how you've overcome stumbling blocks.

In small groups, we’ll discuss topics such as:

· How is Agile testing different from how we’ve always done it? · How do we know what to test? · How do we know what not to test? · On Agile teams, when does testing happen and whose job is it? · What is Exploratory Testing and why should we care? · How do regression tests work? · How does testing improve my design? Should it? · How do we ensure it is cost effective? · What do people mean when they say, "no defects”? · Does Agile change how we test or does it just raise the existing issues?

Bring the topics you feel passion for and add them to the list!

Each self-organizing discussion group will create a document or other record of their discussion, ideas, questions, and insights. We’ll share everyone’s experiences at the end of the day.

Who should attend?

· Testers facing an Agile adoption/People new to the testing role/Testers eager to jump in · Devs who want to get serious about defect-free code · CTOs and Managers of Test/Validation, Dev, Application Delivery · Academics preparing new software/IT professionals for the real world

Cost to attend: $75 per person (Register early. We expect to sell out.)

AI/ML Unconference
Puppet

We're hosting an unconference focused on finding ways to use AI and machine learning to improve the lives of everyone in the community on October 19, 2019 in Portland, Oregon.

Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are predicted to affect aspects of every business, government agency and organization. In order to understand, better use and control these technologies and changes. We ran a similar event a year and a half ago and everyone got a lot out of it. Many things have changed since then and many issues are the same. Let's figure out where we stand.

This will be a great way to meet others in the community and discuss related topics of interest and concern.

Get your ticket today. There is a small fee that will go towards lunch and supplies. Any extra funds will be donated to a local non-profit.

CAT barcamp
1900 SW 4th avenue, Portland Oregon 97201

CAT BarCamp is a free unconference hosted by the Computer Action Team at Portland State University every year. BarCamps are free conferences where the people who show up on the day of decide what the conference is about. No scheduled talks are planned beforehand by the organizers, making the range of talks and topics covered each year entirely unique. Timeslots are posted in an accessible place and the attendants are given (fairly) free reign to post and choose which talks they would like to attend or give. We only ask that topics be respectful and PG-rated. The CAT at PSU is an ops training organization that has secured the venue and is organizing the event. We expect many job-hungry students skilled in development, computer science, operations, and everything else to be in attendance at this event and we want to enable as many connections as possible. Because the CAT is a tech organization and has ties to the larger tech community, many speakers will likely give tech-oriented talks.

    From Side Project to Startup
through CubeSpace [ *sniff* out of business 12 June 2009]

The seeds for 'From Side Project to Startup' were sown at a session of early May's Bar Camp Portland. The conference generated a good amount of buzz, and brought up more questions than the time could answer.

On September 12 and 13, 'From Side Project to Startup' will focus on the resources, planning, and above all initiative needed to make idle thoughts, plots, plans, and what-ifs come to fruition.

The event is crystallized around several 'seeded' sessions, but the BarCamp-style 'unconference' sessions led by participants are the meat-and-potatoes of the weekend.

You'll notice the schedule includes a lot of 'schmooze,' snack, break and party time. With this as well as the unconference time to meet and discuss with people, it's a goal of 'From Side Project to Startup' that a network of interested startups will form to provide each other with peer support and accountability. You can do it, keep going!

As always, Legion of Tech events are free to participants, so please come share, experience, and enjoy the community we're all part of.

This is a free Open Source Geospatial Unconference put on by the Portland OSGeo User Group. The unconference will begin with registration at 9:00am and end at 5:00pm. Coffee, tea, and water will be provided, however participants are on their own for lunch (there are numerous dining options within close proximity).

The unconference will take place in PSU's Smith Memorial Student Union building, on the third floor, in rooms 327, 328, 329, 333, and 338. Registration in room 338 (the VanPort room). Maps of PSU Smith Memorial Student Union are available here.

A hackathon is planned for Friday so check the wiki as plans materialize for this.

    Podcast Unconference
    NedSpace Broadway

The Portland Podcast Cooperative is hosting Portland’s first Podcast Unconference revolving around the theme of podcasting.

Limited to the first 50 people

The Event What you don’t need is another presentation, books, or itineraries planned months ahead of time. Instead, what we all really seek when coming to an event is personal value. The best and most meaningful memories come from when we walk away with thought provoking discussions, new relationships, and those do not happen while sitting in lecture. They happen in the discussions that go on amongst the attendees.

The Goal The goal of this unconference is to bring forth the brightest minds in the community that feel strongly around the topic of podcasting in its many versions. Then from there, to open a new doorway for opportunities to connect and learn, all while having fun and making it what you want it to be.

The Facilitator Megan O'Leary the Director of Member Services from OEN is going to facilitate the whole unconference event. A great experienced facilitator makes the event, so prepare yourself for a wonderful time.

    9:00am-10:00am Coffee & networking 10:00-11:00am Overview and group agenda setting 11:00-11:45am Session 1 11:45am-12:30pm Session 2 12:30pm-1:30pm Lunch 1:30pm-2:15pm Session 3 2:15pm-3:30pm Session 4 3:30pm-4:00pm Closing remarks

    Lunch is included. Capiche.

So, what exactly is an ‘Unconference?’ Think of this as an open conference that is driven by its participants. Unlike traditional conferences, an unconference allows for flexibility, open discussion, and debate, all fueled by its attendees. Innovative conversations with some of the brightest people, important purposes and tasks discussed without any formal agenda, and unplanned dialogue led by ultimately what peaks your interest most.

Why attend? This is your chance to learn from others, seek out answers, and openly ask questions to what matters most to you.

Come to build a collaborative network, establish partnerships, and be in a close community of people that value the same or similar topics of discussion.

Open your awareness to new ideas for yourself or your business.

Be exposed to new trends, latest issues, new projects, emerging businesses and tools..

Unconferences are proven to be highly productive for whatever issues people feel most strongly about. EXPECT fascinating questions, surprising results, inspiring quotes of laughter, and hard work.

How Does it Work? Simple, we provide the theme — podcasting. When you arrive, we will kick off with an ice-breaker, introduce everyone, then break off into building the day's agenda around your needs, interests, and areas of expertise.

The sessions will be broken up into 30-minute discussions and spaces are reserved for gatherings that happen throughout the day.

Who should attend? If you took the time to read through all of this, then YOU! The event is open to anyone with an interest in the topic. The goal is to bring a diverse mix of individuals and professionals from all industries and stages of their podcast. Whether you’re a podcast producer, podcast talent, CEO, a startup founder, possible podcast maker with a new idea, or simply just have interest in the topic of podcasting, we welcome you to join us.

All NedSpace events have a Code of Conduct which all participants, members, partners, visitors, vendors, guests must abide by.

    WhereCamp PDX
    through

"Society is being transformed by new maps and new mapping technology. Our mission is to help create a free forum for people to talk about, present, explore, and learn about projects that involve place."

    What is WhereCamp PDX?

WhereCampPDX is a free unconference focusing on all things geographical and cartographical. This informal meeting of minds welcomes all geo-locative enthusiasts, anyone who asks "where am I" or feels the need to "know their place".

We share a vision of a fully transparent world where data is geographically relevant and just in time.

An unconference is a conference planned by the participants, we all convene together, plan sessions, and have break-outs into sessions. This gives everybody an opportunity to bring to the table the things that interest them the most and lets us talk about new topics that are still new and exploratory. Part of what is important to hearing new voices and getting new ideas is lowering barriers to participation - this event is free and it is driven by the participants.

What kinds of people and topics will be discussed?

This event is community driven and is what you make it. It provide cross pollination between many different kinds of folks from all walks of life. Topics may include remote sensing, geoinformatics, forestry and agriculture, food chain transparency, civil engineering, emergency disaster relief, urban planning, local search, context awareness, place hacking, social cartography, citizen journalism, locative gaming, psychogeography, locative art, and beyond. Expect to participate in conversations on the nature of place as described in pixels, with rays, on paper, and by social practice!
