He is married and has two boys, a crazy cat, and a old house that always needs work. Jean Richardson - Principal, Azure Gate Consulting

Over the course of nearly 25 years, Jean has become experienced in coaching, agile and traditional project management, requirements and business analysis, and training. Her experience and career path have spanned both traditional and agile methods, frameworks, and cultural perspectives. The agile leadership model she espouses, Pervasive Leadership, is designed to help leaders set a collaborative context while still meeting their own stewardship responsibilities to the organization. If a developer ever says “it’s really simple”, run and do not look back.

Developers often throw around terms like “easy” and “obvious” but what do they tell them about what to do to make something “easier” and “more obvious”? What does it tell them about whether somebody else will find something “easy” and “obvious”? Not a lot.

Giving simple questions simple answers tells how to take action to make things easier and more obvious to the casual user. Embracing the task of providng simple answers rejects the fallacy that complex implementations mean complex answers. It creates a new relationship of respect between the user and the developer; a good user can ask a simple question illuminating what people want to do, and a good developer fulfills the user’s desire for a simple answer. What does it mean to be simple?

  • How do you find it?
  • What are its benefits?
  • What happens when you don’t seek simplicity?

Mitch Huff Certified Scrum Master

Mitch Huff is an Agile Program Manager at Viewpoint Construction Software, where he's been leading development of a Software as a Service product for enterprise businesses. Prior to Viewpoint, Mitch led software teams for Nike's FuelBand and Running experiences. His teams were the first at Nike to deliver their software to production continuously, serving traffic from millions of customers with multiple software deployments per day.

Mitch started his career in 2000 with his own business building websites out of his Virginia Tech dorm room during the .com bubble. He continued coding even after focusing his career on project management ten years ago. One of his current coding projects is a simulator that predicts a software project's range of delivery dates for teams using Kanban and continuous delivery. Julie Morse is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. She earned her certifications at MasterBrand Cabinets Inc. in 2003 and has practiced Lean Six Sigma project work since then in both manufacturing and healthcare companies. Julie is currently working as the Process Improvement Project Manager for Clinicient, Inc. Julie’s personal mission statement is “To help others see a new way of doing things that improves their efficiency and work/life balance.”

The Fuzzy Front End (FFE) is the messy "getting started" period of new product development processes. It includes opportunity analysis, concept generation, and pre-technical evaluation. This is a full day, experiential introduction that focuses primarily on the project management elements of Agile. It's ideal for anyone who is going to be or wants to be invovled in an agile project: developers, product people, managers, and of course, project managers.

Course Description:

On a software project, uncertainty is certain. The customer will change their mind, a 'must have' feature will be discovered, deadlines will move, or an unexpected competitive threat will need to be countered. The agile approach to project management allows the team to easily adjust to these changing conditions in order to produce the most valuable software possible.

This experiential workshop teaches the fundamentals of agile project management, and is recommended for everyone who will be involved in an agile project. We will explore the key roles, responsibilities, interactions, and processes that make a successful agile project happen.

Design Thinking: Integrating the Left and Right Brain for Better Decisions, Better Results

Everyone designs. Business people have focused on designing organizations to reliably generate profits. Today’s designers have focused on designing products and services to be truly compelling to customers. What is most compelling to customers though, is often not rational or logical. So designers have evolved effective and efficient trial-and-error approaches that recognize and accommodate rational and non-rational factors. When these heuristics have been applied to strategy and business modeling, it has produced businesses such as the Apple’s iTunes and iPod ecosystem. Design Thinking balances left brain and right brain decision-making, and when applied to strategy work often creates bigger win-wins for companies and their customers, than achievable through conventional thinking.

In this short experiential workshop, based on techniques used at HP, we will provide a brief introduction to the key concepts, break up into small teams and step through a facilitated Design Thinking exercise. At the end of the session, we will regroup to learn from each team’s experience with the process.

The Design Thinking approach is collaborative, interdisciplinary and highly relevant to anyone involved in the development of new products and services: product managers, engineers, designers, and marketers. The objective of this workshop is to provide you with the foundations of Design Thinking and launch your on-going learning on the topic.

Due to the interactive nature of the exercise, we’ll have to limit the number of registrants so register early to make sure you get to participate that evening.

Managing a technology-related project for your nonprofit can seem like a daunting task, whether you have experience in project management or not. Even if you feel like you have a good system in place, having a chance to connect with other’s approaches and perspectives can be an eye-opening experience.

During this Lab, we will spend the day working through strategies, frameworks, and best practices to help guide you through the range of technology-related projects that you encounter and how to better manage them for success. Be prepared for exercises that will get you thinking about a particular project your organization is currently working on or getting ready to begin. Also come ready to share your experiences, tips, and lessons learned with the rest of the group as we work to learn as a community.

Agile teams are all about high bandwidth cross-functional communication. But, we can get really jumpy about conflict. Creative conflict is where the good stuff is in product development and innovation.

In her travels Jean has had the opportunity to observe a large number of teams work together—and attempt to work together. It’s clear that conversations change, the way the team moves together changes, and quality of work changes as the teams consciousness is raised. Many agile practices serve to support the goal of consciousness raising. Through observation, research, and experimentation, Jean has developed a working definition of team consciousness which will be a useful tool for you as you lead agile projects.

Come learn about how effective conflict engagement deepens consciousness and what we mean when we talk about consciousness and software development. Jean’s style is dialogic, so expect to interact!

About Jean Richardson Jean Richardson is principal consultant and founder of Azure Gate Consulting. Through more than 25 years of experience in software development she consulted in project management, writing, training, public speaking, and business analysis, and the last five years as an Agile coach helping leaders transform organizations.
