PDX Django Lunch
Galleria Downtown Shopping Office Plaza

UPDATE: djangopony writes: Heading to Portland for a magical django lunch with @igalko and crew. ^_^ -- http://twitter.com/djangopony/status/1708120665

The weekly lunch for people that work with or just enjoy talking about Django.

This week, instead of Deschutes, we're all heading to the food carts at SW 10th Ave & SW Alder St, and then meeting inside the Galleria mall right next door. The entrance is on SW 10th Ave, next to the Made in Oregon store. The mall has tables that are usually empty, so we should have room (hopefully!). Feel free to bring a bag lunch instead, as well.

We'll plan to meet at 12:45 inside the Galleria to give time to grab food from a cart.

The "whenever we feel like it" lunch meetup for people that work with Django or just enjoy chatting or learning about it. The meetup is completely informal, with no presentations or speakers.

This week the weather is completely insane so meeting outside is totally out of the question, so we're back to our original haunt at the Deschutes Brewery in the Pearl. Since we'll need a table, please RSVP by 10 AM Tuesday on the pdxdjango Google Group or by messaging robotadam on irc.freenode.net (You can use their web client if you don't have one handy: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=pdxdjango ). Agile Metrics that Matter
Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub

Good business decisions require relevant and valid information. Deciding what information is relevant can be challenging – especially as organizations transition to Agile development and project management methods. This presentation will explore ways to use the Goal-Question-Metric (GQM) technique to inform good decisions by identifying some relevant reporting measures when applying the Agile scrum methodology.

Agile teams value working software over comprehensive documentation. Teams deliver working software in short, iterative releases of business value rather than larger releases of longer duration. This increases the need to make quick decisions and the need for relevant and timely information. GQM provides a goal-driven way to identify the information our stakeholders really need.

This presentation will walk through using GQM, look at examples of applying it, review some relevant Agile measures and discuss relevant measures for different stakeholders. Audience participation is expected.

The Right Tool for the Job: iovation Shares How Cassandra Helped Them Scale
Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub

Identifying fraud and suspicious activity on the Internet is all about data. iovation protects its customers by analyzing devices performing high value transactions and recommending an action in real-time based on past activity. Apache Cassandra can consume and analyze a ridiculous amount of data while keeping costs low.

At iovation an implementation using Cassandra currently supports 10,000 read/write operations per second on a cluster storing over 1 billion rows in 500GB, Cassandra makes this solution horizontally scalable, highly available, recoverable, and cheap (under $20k).

In this presentation Darin will cover some of the other options his team explored, hardware choices that were made, and the more interesting tunables Cassandra offers that allow you to squeeze IOPS out of your cluster.

Presenter: Darin Glatt, Principal Application Architec, iovation Darin Glatt is software developer with over 10 years experience working with large-scale distributed systems. He is currently the Application Architect for iovation where he helps fight fraud, account take over, and identity theft on the Internet by tracking device reputation and suspicious activity in real-time. Prior to taking on the bad guys of the Internet, Darin helped build a massively multi-player blackjack game for the UltimateBet platform and developed MetroOnes nationwide VoIP network, the backbone of their 411 offering.

Cloud Applications - QA and Testing
Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC)

Cloud computing has become a big topic in the IT industry. Bolstered by inexpensive, available platforms, tools and support, more and more business are seeing the advantages and moving applications to "cloud” environments. As this transformation takes place, how does it change the way QA / Testing professionals approach verifying and validating that applications meet functional and non-functional requirements? What should QA be looking for in terms of performance, integration and security? What kinds and amount of testing will vendors be looking for before they accept an application into their environment? How much and what kind of testing will the hosting vendor perform before they allow an application to go "live”.

In this event a panel of experts from different companies focusing on cloud applications, will provide their perspectives and discuss questions and views posed by the attendees. This will be an interactive discussion – taking a deep dive into the topic and providing a forum for attendees and speakers to share insights and experiences. The intention is to raise awareness and knowledge and provide attendees an understanding of the key issues and approaches when their company considers moving applications to a cloud-based environment.

Bring your questions and/or experiences and be prepared for a great event.

Be Your Own Brand Evangelist: adventures in DIY branding and target audience definition
Anvil Media

Anvil Media Lunch & Learn

Join Alicia Nagel from Alicia Nagel Creative for a seminar on branding and audiences on February 12.

You might think that your target audience is “everyone”, but marketing to everyone often leads to generic messaging that goes unnoticed. Instead, show a little personality! Embrace your core values and let your passion shine through. By defining your brand and identifying your target audience(s) you can connect with your customers. When you understand your customer, you can anticipate their decision-making process and ace their evaluation of your product or service. Customers who forge a bond with your brand spread the word about your company’s awesomeness and become brand evangelists. Seminar attendees will learn how to define their brand, define their target audience(s), anticipate their audience’s decision making process, and foster brand evangelists for their company. Presentation will be followed by a brief Q&A.

Read The 5 Stages of Getting To Know Your Audience for a taste of some of the topics which will be covered.

The presentation will be an educational Lunch & Learn event from Noon to 1 p.m. at the Anvil office. Food and beverages will be provided. Register now to save your seat!

Portland Lunch 2.0: Virtually
Online

Remember in the good old days — like way back in 2019 — when we used to get together for events in person? Well, that's not an option these days. But that doesn't mean that we still can't get together for a good old fashioned Portland Lunch 2.0. Virtually.

If you've been looking for the opportunity to reconnect with your peers in the Portland startup community, you're thinking about starting something, or you're new to the area and looking to meet some folks amidst this pandemic weirdness, please join us for a virtual Portland Lunch 2.0.

No agenda. No talks. Just lunch with the community.

And while we'd love to buy lunch for you like we used to, this time, there is no such thing as a free lunch. You'll have to bring your own.

Portland Lunch 2.0: Virtually
Online

Just because we're still socially distanced doesn't mean we can't connect.

As the weather starts to change, vaccines continue to roll out, and the glimmer of recovery grows ever brighter, there's no better time to reconnect with folks in the community with whom you've lost touch. And there's no better way to gather with a random smattering of your startup community peers than Portland Lunch 2.0.

No agenda. No talks. Just lunch with your community.

And while we'd love to buy lunch for you like we used to, this time, there is no such thing as a free lunch. You'll have to bring your own. Or not.

Web3 Founder Lunch With Madrona Venture Group
Beaches Restaurant & Bar

Join Madrona Venture Group and Madrona Venture Labs for lunch during ETHPortland to talk with fellow founders and meet investors, including Maria Gilfoyle and Scott Jacobson. This lunch will be full of great conversation and learnings.

Last month MVL hosted an accelerator week called, Launchable, which brought together 20 Web3 early-stage companies. Companies heard from leaders in the field and got hands-on help building — with one company being awarded $100,000 in funding.

Join us for lunch on Friday between 12:00 and 1:30 p.m. PT.

After RSVPing through Eventbrite, click on Fairshare to join our PNW Web3 Discord community and be airdropped a Launchable NFT. In the Discord you can connect with like-minded Web3 builders and entrepreneurs. Everyone at the lunch will also receive a POAP.

Madrona Venture Group is the largest and most active venture firm focused on early-stage companies in the Pacific Northwest. We invest in a range of different technology companies, including Web3 companies leveraging blockchain technology. Whatever the investment stage, we roll up our sleeves and work with founders to build their companies. We partner with founders from Day One for the Long Run.

Madrona Venture Labs is Madrona Venture Group's incubation program. The lab partners with founders as co-builders, advisers, and their first investors. Founders develop new ideas and start building them in partnership with Madrona from Day One.
