CHIFOO Event: Caring Technologies Designing For Trust And Care
New Relic

CHIFOO presents "Caring Technologies Designing For Trust And Care" with Amelia Abreu, UX Night School!

Technology has the potential to shape the way that we give and receive care and the conditions in which the work of care is done. Yet, can we automate the crucial tasks of caring, and is it in our own interest to do so? How can we design services, along with products and systems, to support care?

About the Speaker

She's worked with teams at organizations like Nike, Intel, Mozilla and Microsoft, along with agencies, startups, and cultural institutions. Big Data in Healthcare and Biomedicine:

Opportunities and Challenges

› Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Medicine is one of the last areas to fully embrace information technology. However, recent investments have led to widespread use of electronic health records while advances in gene sequencing and other biotechnologies have now led medicine to be awash in data. While this data provides new opportunities for better understanding of health and disease, there are also many challenges to its effective use. In this talk, Dr. Hersh will describe the potential for Big Data in Healthcare and Biomedicine but also discuss the myriad of challenges for its effective use.

William Hersh, MD, FACMI, FACP is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology in the School of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Hersh is a leader and innovator in biomedical informatics both in education and research.

› Doors will open at 5:30 for a 30-minute networking happy half-hour! The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic. The presentation will begin right at 6p.

› Stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this and upcoming events by joining our Meetup group, New Relic FutureTalks PDX, and following us on Twitter @newrelic.

Innovation And Its Impact In Creating A New World Of Healthcare
online

Join us remotely early afternoon on Wednesday, August 17th for our second of three webinar series geared to help ease the busy Summer season of benefits decisions. Our lunchtime presentation and discussion will provide HR professionals with a well-rounded panel of speakers sharing innovations that are leading a new world of customized healthcare.

Part two of the series will focus on the role innovation still largely plays in the sometimes more traditional market of healthcare. As the health needs of employees evolve, there is a new baseline expectation of employees to have quick and personalized solutions at their fingertips.

Questions to be answered during this session:

-How do I continue to increase custom value to individual employees across an entire company? -What options are there for increasing employee engagement across multiple channels? -What are different ways that employers are increasing digital access to wellness without compromising privacy?

Speakers and moderator to be announced soon!

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Open Source Medical Informatics
PSU Maseeh Engineering Building

Historically, implementation of electronic health records in medical offices have been problematic. Specifically, poor implementation of these products is the leading cause of failure of acceptance of EHRs in these offices. Implementation of EHRs in the small physician office remains poorly documented and this contributes to this failure rate. To address this need, OEMR (The OpenEMR Non-Profit) developed an internship experience with the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at Oregon Health and Science University to develop a road map for converting a small physician's office that is still using paper records to OpenEMR, an open source electronic health record, while using open source tools to implement and document the transformation. Documentation was made public on the OEMR wiki (at http://www.oemr.org/wiki/Going_From_Paper_to_Electronic) as a template for future implementations. This presentation is an overview of the documentation completed for the wiki. There are many paths to implementation, but the destination is meaningful use of the OpenEMR system.

Special Thanks: PLUG regular Keith Lofstrom was instrumental to the success of this project, not to mention Dr. Sam Bowen, MD in North Carolina and PLUG speaker Tony McCormick.

Diane Petersen is an emerging clinical informaticist, drawing from her formal education in clinical informatics and her extensive experience as a clinical pharmacist in a variety of settings. Having completed an internship leading and documenting the implementation of OpenEMR, an open source ambulatory electronic health record and practice management software application, Diane is in her last term of the Masters of Biomedical Informatics program at Oregon Health and Science University. She plans to apply her background and knowledge contributing to the improvement of managing healthcare data, and ultimately the improvement of patient care and outcomes.

Many will head to the Lucky Lab NW after the meeting

Date: Wednesday, March 11, 2015

Time: Doors at 6 p.m. event at 7 p.m.

Location: Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main Street, Vancouver, Wash.

Food & Drink: Beer, wine, pizza slices, popcorn and snacks available.

Event Description:

Humans have used intoxicants like alcohol and marijuana for thousands of years, and we modern humans are no different. The Northwest is home to thriving beer, wine, and spirits industries, and now that both Washington and Oregon permit the recreational sale and use of marijuana, there are more legal opportunities to get high.

At this Science on Tap, have a beer and stimulate both sides of your brain as neuroscientist Bill Griesar, PhD, and artist Jeff Leake from NW Noggin discuss both the science and art of alcohol and marijuana. Find out how these drugs affect the chemistry our brains and how they change our behavior. Also find out how some well-known artists have approached (and sometimes used) these drugs in the creation of works of art.

Science on Tap - Parasites

Science on Tap is a science lecture series where you can sit back, enjoy a pint, and laugh while you learn. Listen to experts talk about the science in your neighborhood and around the world. You don’t have to be a science geek to have fun—all you need is a thirst for knowledge!

COST: $8 online advance tickets, $10* suggested cover at the door

FOOD & DRINK: Beer, wine, popcorn, and snacks available. You’re welcome to bring food into the theater with you.

DESCRIPTION:

Parasites constitute a global health problem of unimaginable magnitude. Two out of three people worldwide are afflicted with a parasitic disease, and most people who harbor parasites actually are afflicted with a multiplicity of diseases. The organisms that are considered traditional parasites are either protozoa, worms, or insects, although viruses, bacteria, and fungi also meet the classic definition of a parasite.

At this Science on Tap, Dr. Buddy Ullman, parasitologist at OHSU, will take a somewhat irreverent tour of the major time-honored parasites and describe where they live, how they reproduce, and what effect they have on humans. Warning: this talk will be both gross and fascinating!
