Case studies in Big Data -- Three Implementation Stories | Developer Event
New Relic

Join us for an overview of three different big data technology implementation case studies. Three different businesses will provide an overview of the problem they set out to solve, the data involved, and the technology used. You’ll learn about high level strengths, weaknesses, and applicability of the different technologies involved and the real world implementation experience.

Storytellers:

Scott Waddell will explain how iovation adopted Cassandra to achieve service scalability with improvements to performance, availability, and development flexibility. He’ll highlight lessons learned and the current state of the deployed active/active architectureof 100+ Cassandra nodes.

Scott Waddell is the Chief Technology Officer at iovation where he is privileged to lead the engineering, ioLabs, and IT operations teams to help customers win the battle against online fraud & abuse. Scott has more than 20 years of hands-on leadership experience spanning fraud mitigation, computer & network security, critical infrastructure protection, and information warfare. He is also a new member of the TAO Board of Directors and enjoys time with his wife and three teenage children in Lake Oswego.

Shawn Duffy has implemented and architected multiple Big Data environments for companies in the Consumer Goods, Entertainment, & Retail industries. His functional & technical experiences for these implementations will be shared, especially what made them successful (which may surprise you) and what challenges/pitfalls to avoid, delving into the business' role of Big Data as well as the technical specifics surrounding their success.

Shawn Duffy is the Business Intelligence Practice Lead at Axian. He has spent the past 15+ years in the Business Intelligence industry as developer and architect. Starting out as a Database programmer & Crystal Reports Developer, he progressed through all aspects of Data Warehousing, BI Strategy, Architecture Design, and Big Data. He has worked with many Fortune 100/500 companies, including the Schwan Foods Company, Lockheed Martin, Tyson Foods, Baker & McKenzie, Raytheon, & Tribune Company, architecting Business Intelligence and Big Data Solutions.

Allen Grimm will demonstrate the four steps of his data science process designed to take a business from the starting line to fully functional data infrastructure. Each step will be explained through case studies from past and current projects. By the end of the presentations, the technical-minded will have a better grounding for their skill set and the business-minded will have a better grasp on how to conceptualize a data team.

Fascinated by the intersection of abstraction and reality, Allen's heart is in data science. Formally trained in computational intelligence at Portland State University followed by data mining at Nike and predictive modeling in various startups, he is currently Senior Data Scientist at Sovolve and is founding Grimm Science. His passion is in de-mystifying data science and exploring the best practices of building data science initiatives.

DevOps Study Night: Cloud-based server management
Vevo

Women Who Code Portland's monthly DevOps study night for April. This month's theme: Cloud-based server management

This month, we'll take a look at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), two of the main providers of cloud infrastructure services. We'll learn how to navigate the web dashboard of AWS, and go over some of the main services AWS provides, like EC2 instances and S3 buckets. Then, we'll all get a chance to workshop together to spin up a server using GCP, and configure some basic services.

Refactoring for Asynchronous Execution on Mobile
Smarsh

To improve responsiveness, developers often use asynchronous programming. In the post-PC era, asynchronous programming is even more in demand because mobile and wearable devices have limited resources and access the network excessively. One current development task is refactoring long-running, blocking synchronous code (for example, accessing the Web, a cloud, a database, or a file system) into nonblocking asynchronous code. This talk describes the refactorings that improve responsiveness, along with the obstacles of using asynchrony. It also presents the challenges of retrofitting asynchrony and presents program analyses and transformations and a growing, practical toolset and resources for retrofitting asynchrony.

Speaker

Danny Dig- Assistant Professor in the School of EECS at Oregon State University and an Adjunct Professor at University of Illinois

He published over 50 journal and conference papers on refactoring, of which five won awards at top Software Engineering conferences. According to Google Scholar, his publications have been cited 2200+ times. His PhD dissertation on API refactoring won the David Kuck Outstanding PhD dissertation award at U. of Illinois, the First Prize at the interdisciplinary ACM Student Research Competition Grand Finals, and the First Prize at the ACM SIGPLAN SRC. He wrote the world’s first open-source refactoring engine for Java (which was downloaded over 17,000 times in 2001).

Some of his other refactoring tools are shipping with the official release of Eclipse, NetBeans, or VisualStudio IDE and are used by millions of Java and C# developers. He regularly teaches on the topic of refactoring at summer schools, conference tutorials, and technical courses in industry.

More info about his research and teaching is available on his homepage.

The "Beer Dashboard" App: A Case Study
USBank Tower Burnside Room

Portland’s own Bailey’s Taproom has 20 beers from which pour an ever-rotating array of fine brews representing a wide range of styles emphasizing Oregon breweries. Our main attraction for this event is their "Beer Dashboard”, a large flat-screen monitor that displays detailed information for each beer on tap, the amount left in each keg, and who’s checked in through Foursquare as well as tweeting the arrival of a new beer on the menu.

Most software developers love beer, but rarely do both interests so easily combine into a single SAO event. Join us with developer Eric Sterling, the creator of the beer dashboard, as he delves into nuances of this project and his adventures turning restaurant software into business. Afterwards, we invite you to walk over to Bailey’s to see new cool beer technology in action and enjoy a pint yourself!

What's better than combining what Portland does best; beer and technology!

Meet the Creator

Eric Sterling, Software Engineer, Thetus Corporation and Chief Software Architect/CTO, WineSlingr

Eric is a craft beer lover and senior software developer specializing in innovative internet applications, mobile development and highly scalable back-end systems. Eric has worked at software consultancy firms such as Vertigo, SoftSource and Aeshen as well as innovative startups like Thetus, Supertracks, and Instant Media. Among the projects he was worked on, Eric has designed a system to help coordinate first responders in emergencies, a website for legally downloading high definition movies and an online interactive game to help promote Jay-Z’s book launch. He is well versed in a wide variety of languages including C#, Java, Ruby, Python, JavaScript and Scala.
