Galois Tech Talk: Robust Artificial Intelligence and Anomaly Detection

Abstract: Recent progress in AI and machine learning is stimulating interest in applying AI in high stakes applications such as self-driving cars, surgical robots, and autonomous weapons systems. These applications require high levels of software assurance and resilience, but virtually all AI research has focused on raw performance without paying attention to questions of robustness and resilience.

In this talk, I will survey AI research that aims to create robust systems. I will consider both robustness to “known unknowns” and robustness to “unknown unknowns” — that is, to unmodeled aspects of the environment.

One technology that is relevant to creating robust AI systems is anomaly detection. In the second part of the talk, I will survey the work at Oregon State on anomaly detection. I’ll discuss our recent research on applying anomaly detection to problems of fraud detection and equipment diagnosis and discuss methods for explaining anomaly alarms to an analyst and incorporating analyst feedback into the anomaly detection process.

Bio: Dr. Tom Dietterich (AB Oberlin College 1977; MS University of Illinois 1979; PhD Stanford University 1984) is Professor Emeritus and Director of Intelligent Systems Research in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University, where he joined the faculty in 1985. Dietterich has devoted his career to machine learning and artificial intelligence. He has authored more than 180 publications and two books. His research is motivated by challenging real world problems ranging from personal information management, to drug design, to sustainability, and most recently to problems in safe and robust artificial intelligence. Dietterich has also devoted many years of service to the research community. He is Past President of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and he previously served as President of AAAI (2014-16) and as the founding president of the International Machine Learning Society (2001-08). Other major roles include Executive Editor of the journal Machine Learning (1992-98), co-founder of the Journal for Machine Learning Research (2000), and program chair of AAAI 1990 and NIPS 2000. He is currently the moderator for machine learning on arXiv. Dietterich is a Fellow of the ACM, AAAS, and AAAI.

Daniel, who earned a PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as Masters degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will be reading from his most recent novel, The Clockwork Dynasty.

After the reading, Daniel will be joined by Todd Greco, Ziba’s Director of Interactive Design, in a conversation exploring where science, technology and design overlap, and the future of machines. We look forward to audience engagement in this conversation. Daniel will be available for a book signing following the speaking program.

The Clockwork Dynasty imagines a history in which humanlike court automatons secretly served the great empires of antiquity. Centuries later, the same machines are running out of power. As the modern-day survivors cannibalize each other for energy, a human scientist will risk her life to find the origin of the machine race, and the key to saving it.

Come join us every Tuesday at the Tech Academy. This is an interactive and immersive instructor lead meeting. This week we will cover the basic foundations of neural networks, covering introduction to the perceptron, artificial neural networks (ANN), convolutional neural networks (CNN), recurrent neural networks (RNN), and wrap up with adversarial attacks on neural networks.

We use a digital project and whiteboard. The course is given at a comfortable pace, so that any attendee can interrupt and ask a question. No question is too small or wrong.

We ask all the attendees to be patient so that everyone attending learns at the same pace so that all attendees are at the same level at the end of the two hours.

Inference, Deep Neural Nets, Hyper-Parameters, Sign Language and Visual Insights

Welcome to TensorFlow Northwest. It was exciting to have so many of you come out during February’s snow-mageddon. This month, we prepared a balanced agenda to have new contents, and to incrementally build on what you’ve learned. On the other hand, we built the labs in a way that will allow those who couldn’t beat the storm to catch up quickly.

Al Kari will begin with an introduction and a technology update, then he moves on to cover a key topic in TensorFlow: Saving your models so you can use them to classify new data. The discussion will cover best practices and techniques to use your trained models for inference and transfer learning.

Al is Manceps’ Co-founder and CEO (www.manceps.com) where he helps enterprise clients with their Digital Transformation and intelligent computing roadmaps.

Next, Andrew Ferlitsch will take you on a code-along adventure via Colaboratory- An Introduction to Constructing Neural Networks and Hyper-parameter Tuning.

You’ve kicked the tires with 5 digits hand signs last month. Now, we progressively build layers of a neural network for the larger dataset of the American Sign Language hand gestures including all the letters of the alphabet. We will cover a fully connected neural network, proceed to a deep neural network, and then add dropout layers to tackle overfitting. Then we wrap up with the fundamentals of hyper-parameter tuning. The lab requires a laptop with a modern browser and will be at a modest pace to provide sufficient opportunity to ask questions and share insights.

As Chief Data Scientist at Manceps, Andrew works on solving a diverse set of problems using Deep Learning and advanced analytics.

Finally, David Molina will demystify Neural Networks once and for all, visually! What does bias do in a Neural Network? Why are weights important? What happens when we select a high learning rate? How do we know how many inputs to select? How many hidden layers a model needs in order to predict accurately? How does a Neural Network work? These are questions we ask when we begin studying Machine Learning as we encounter our first Neural Network. David will explore visually what’s behind the code, and what happens inside a Neural Network when it runs.

David is an Industrial Engineer with five years corporate experience in building databases, managing and analyzing large data sets, and optimizing systems and processes. He is currently studying Machine Learning and consulting for companies in his native country of Colombia.

Artificial Intelligence Training - Gap Data Engineering Framework - Computer Vision Image Preparation

This will be a hands on Python and computer vision machine learning so bring a laptop. We will be doing code alongs in a Jupyter Notebook using the Gap NLP/CV Data Engineering framework for Machine Learning. The code along will focus on a variety of ways of using the framework to get images into machine language ready data, storage/retrieval, and mini-batch generation.

Abstract:

There's been a mountain of research into Deep Neural Networks' practical applications in image, audio and text processing. But these deep networks are often built on large corpuses of data (such as ImageNet or Wikipedia).

But that may not apply directly to your domain. Gathering data specific to your problem space may not only be a lengthy process but an expensive one too. That makes the business win a hard sell.

Transfer Learning can dramatically eliminate many of those problems, quickly.

In 'How to stand on the shoulders of giants,' we'll discuss the research background into Transfer Learning and how to implement the process in either Keras or PyTorch. The goal is for listeners to feel comfortable with the concept and prepared to begin researching an application in their workspaces.

Bio:

James is a wanderer, tinkerer, and ponderer. Not one to be pinned down, he's more comfortable in the abstract than in the known. He embraces ambiguity with a bearhug. That's a trick of course. He bear hugs the ambiguity into little mathematical boxes and then says "Dance!" and, oh, how that ambiguity dances! James currently hangs his hat at Vacasa where he works as a Senior Data Scientist tackling a myriad of growth-objectives with engineering and machine learning.

Speaker 2 Details:

Five years ago, Word2Vec offered a leap forward for the average data scientist to perform efficient algorithms in Natural Language Processing. From a body of text, Word2Vec generates a semantic space, in which the trained word vectors are often highly associated with their meaning. The next leap, a semantic space for phrases and sentences, proves tougher both computationally and in faithfully representing a composite meaning over multiple words. Surprisingly, quantifying particle interactions a la quantum mechanics shares close mathematical similarity to quantifying the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. In this talk, I will provide an overview of current techniques in modeling language past word vectors, as well as point out the quantum mechanical aspects of these techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the “Compositional Distributional Semantics” model for the task of identifying word ambiguity."

CANCELED WEATHER: Time Series Prediction of SNOTEL Data

Sunil Rao will be presenting his past research on SNOTEL data using the time series prediction.

Drought is a serious problem in much of the U.S., with the worst conditions across the southern and western parts of the nation. Much of irrigation and recreation facilities depend on proper forecasting of streamflow. The water supply for irrigation largely comes from rivers and creeks, whose streamflow originates from the springtime melting of winter snow. A water supply forecast is a prediction of streamflow volume that will flow past a point on a stream during a specified season, typically in the spring and summer. One of the primary sources for the data is through NRCS SNOTEL( Snow Telemetry) data (available to public as part of tax dollars at work). In this demo, we showcase one such tool (Timeseries ARIMAX model) to forecast Streamflow volume for Deschutes River Basin, OR and later compare with actual data to see how it performed.

Topic Modeling Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation

Philip Robinson will be presenting research whilst at NASA on Topic Modeling.

Topic modeling is the task of taking a collection of objects and establishing a strategy for describing these objects by common categories found across the collection. This is usually an unsupervised activity applied to a document collection and doesn't require topics to be human interpret-able. My talk introduces Latent Dirichlet Allocation, as a topic modeling strategy for a collection of topics, and discusses an implemented prototype system I developed for NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab. For this project, I addressed the "Matchmaker's Problem" in the context of identifying the best employee to solve a mission-critical engineering anomaly in late-stage missions. Artificial Intelligence and the “Barrier of Meaning”

In today's news, we see plenty of stories about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the world. There are many potential benefits to be gained from AI, but there are also a number of concerns about how it will affect our lives moving into the future. What exactly is artificial intelligence anyway?

In 1986, the mathematician and philosopher Gian-Carlo Rota wrote, “I wonder whether or when artificial intelligence will ever crash the barrier of meaning.” Here, the phrase “barrier of meaning” refers to a belief about humans versus machines. Humans are able to “actually understand” the situations they encounter, whereas AI systems (at least current ones) do not possess such understanding. The internal representations learned by (or programmed into) AI systems do not capture the rich “meanings” that humans bring to bear in perception, language, and reasoning.

In this talk, Melanie Mitchell, a professor of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at Portland State University, will assess the state of the art of artificial intelligence in several domains and describe some of their current limitations and vulnerabilities, which can be accounted for by a lack of true understanding of the domains they work in.

Audience participation in the discussion will be encouraged, and together, we'll explore the following questions:

- To be reliable in human domains, what do AI systems actually need to “understand”?
- Which domains require human-like understanding?
- What does such understanding entail?

Melanie Mitchell is Professor of Computer Science at Portland State University, and External Professor and Member of the Science Board at the Santa Fe Institute. She attended Brown University, where she majored in mathematics and did research in astronomy, and the University of Michigan, where she received a Ph.D. in computer science, Her dissertation, in collaboration with her advisor Douglas Hofstadter, was the development of Copycat, a computer program that makes analogies. She has held faculty or professional positions at the University of Michigan, the Santa Fe Institute, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the OGI School of Science and Engineering, and Portland State University.

She is the author or editor of five books and over 80 scholarly papers in the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and complex systems. Her most recent book, Complexity: A Guided Tour, published in 2009 by Oxford University Press, is the winner of the 2010 Phi Beta Kappa Science Book Award. It was also named by Amazon.com as one of the ten best science books of 2009 and was long-listed for the Royal Society's 2010 book prize. Melanie originated the Santa Fe Institute's Complexity Explorer online education program, which offers online courses and other educational resources related to the field of complex systems.

Machine Learning in the Real World

Companies and governments increasingly deploy intelligent systems to the real world. These systems—depending on the design and purpose—have the capacity to either greatly enhance the general well-being of the world or bring about some form of a science fiction dystopia.

Sean McGregor, who will speak to us via teleconference, will cover both aspects of these systems in equal measure. First, he'll share examples of leading-edge "AI for Good" research. Then, he'll guide us through some real-world harms caused by deployed AI systems as explored from the AI Incident Database now under development with the Partnership on AI. Sean will then wrap up the talk with a discussion of current opportunities and risks in the development of AI systems for the general welfare.

Speaker bio:

Sean defended his machine learning PhD at Oregon State University with research projects at the intersection of reinforcement learning and public policy. He now focuses on solving real-world problems with machine learning and visual analytics, including problems in wildfire suppression, heliophysics, and analog neural network computation.

Outside of his research, Sean serves as technical lead for the IBM Watson AI XPRIZE, chair of the Partnership on AI expert group for Safety Critical AI, and member of the Fair, Transparent, and Accountable (FTA) expert group. Sean's "day job" is developing neural networks to run on analog architectures at Syntiant. Outside of his paid work, Sean co-founded the Portland TA3M, a series of workshops at major academic AI conferences on the topic of "AI for Good," and a now defunct non-profit dedicated to privacy education, the Privly Foundation.

If there is anything that is universally true in machine learning, it is that more data is always better. That’s why data scientists always respond to the “How much data do you need?” question with “How much data can you get?”

But sometimes you don’t have much data, because: a) It’s genuinely hard to get; or b) You haven’t been gathering it for very long and it takes time. This is a much more common circumstance than you might think. And you are not alone if you're experiencing this issue. Luckily, and not surprisingly, the machine learning community has come up with numerous approaches for dealing with it. Come sit in on an exclusive conversation with Dr. Tim Oates, professor and practitioner, who will share what appeals to intuition as to why the methods work and provide concrete examples of their application to simple problems.

We will discuss transfer learning, open source datasets and synthetic data, few shot learning, active learning, and semi-supervised learning. By the end of the evening, you should understand what all of these methods are, when they are applicable, and what kinds of results you can expect from using them.

Dr. Tim Oates is Chief Data Scientist at Synaptiq and an Oros Family Professor of Computer Science and Technology in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2001 with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and spent a year as a postdoc in the MIT AI Lab. He is an author or co-author of more than 150 peer reviewed papers in AI, ML, and data mining. Dr. Oates served as Chief Scientist for a big data startup in the contact management space, and has consulted in a wide variety of industries, including healthcare, construction, amusement parks, publishing, and social media.

The AI Education Movement: Youth, Schools, and Everyone Else

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is currently in the news almost every day — chatbots like ChatGPT, image generators like Dall-E, and a host of other tools are now available and being put to use in a variety of ways.

While these software algorithms can potentially help us to work faster and smarter, there are many issues to consider in whether and how to implement them. Details that must be addressed include: What data is being used to train the language models? Who owns the source data and the outputs that are generated? How accurate are the models? How much human oversight of the model-building process is there? And what are the potential harms when things go wrong?

These algorithms are already being used to make decisions about people’s lives, like whether a person gets a job or a bank loan and how much time a person convicted of a crime might spend in jail, but students in particular are having their lives and actions analyzed more and more every day. For instance, proctoring software tries to determine whether students are cheating on exams, other software looks for plagiarism in student essays and reports, and there’s even software that analyzes emotions and/or physical objects — Is the student happy or angry? Are they holding a cellphone or a gun?

This month, leaders from Encode Justice Oregon — Maansi Singh, Sahana Srinivasan, and Julianne Huang — will join us to share their experiences and their work on drafting policy recommendations for use of AI in schools. They’ll speak about their concerns and how they think these technologies should be used in educational settings. They'll also discuss the upcoming Youth Citizens Assembly, which will give students an opportunity to add their voices to the digital privacy conversation and pitch their own ideas.

Speaker bios:

Encode Justice is a global coalition of youth activists fighting for justice and accountability in the digital age. Oregon’s chapter, Encode Justice Oregon, works to educate their school, local and statewide communities about algorithmic fairness while supporting legislation that encourages the safe and effective implementation of new technologies. From working with the Oregon DOJ's Consumer Privacy Task Force to engaging in connections with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Smart City PDX, PDX Privacy, and Rose Haven, Encode Justice Oregon has established a statewide presence centered around furthering the digital privacy and equitable technology movement.

Maansi Singh is a senior at Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Encode Justice Oregon Chapter. Maansi has participated in discussions surrounding the role of youth advocacy in AI ethics with organizations such as the United Nations, Washington Post, Google, ACLU, Meta and the World Economic Forum. Maansi believes that intellectual curiosity and the pursuit of new questions surrounding AI are ontological components of the ongoing discussion about human rights. Through Encode Justice and other efforts, she has pursued the intersection between computer science, ethics, policy and education.

Sahana Srinivasan is a sophomore at Jesuit High School. She is the Director of Education for Encode Justice Oregon. She is especially interested in the intersection of AI in medicine. AI ethics is important to her because in the medical field, it is critical that AI systems are both accurate, reliable, and without bias.

Julianne Huang serves as the Co-Director of Research for Encode Justice’s Oregon Chapter. Her position allows her to bring a youth voice into the AI Ethics conversation and inspires her to continue being an advocate for people like her who have grown up in a tech-centered world. Outside of EJ, she is a math and science enthusiast who enjoys participating in dance and choir.

How governments are making AI more responsible, fair and explainable

Last month, we heard about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in our educational system, but these technologies are also being incorporated into many other commercial and social enterprises that impact our daily lives, including the fields of medicine, journalism, finance, human resources, law enforcement, and transportation, just to name a few.

While AI technologies may be beneficial to society, how do we know that the systems being developed are trustworthy and that they actually do what their creators claim? Can developers explain how their AI systems work and demonstrate that the outputs they generate are not biased? How might governments regulate these systems? Should companies be allowed to regulate themselves? How might governments and companies work together to ensure fairness and understandability of what the systems are doing?

Last year, World Privacy Forum, a privacy-focused research nonprofit, studied various AI governance tools currently in use around the world. They recently published their findings via a report that was co-authored by Pam Dixon, executive director of World Privacy Forum, and Kate Kaye, deputy director of the organization: https://www.worldprivacyforum.org/2023/12/new-report-risky-analysis-assessing-and-improving-ai-governance-tools/

At this month's meeting, World Privacy Forum’s Kate Kaye will join us to share the details of their research methodologies and what they learned about how governments are overseeing the implementation of AI in their countries. She'll give an overview of what AI is and what it does, and she'll also present some examples of both effective and ineffective approaches to good governance of these systems.

Kate Kaye is a Portland resident and deputy director of World Privacy Forum, a nonpartisan public-interest research nonprofit. Her research focuses on the implications of AI, digital identity and health data ecosystems, data governance, and other issues related to data collection, use and privacy.

Before joining World Privacy Forum, Kate worked for more than 20 years as an award-winning journalist covering data, emerging technology and the impact of tech on people and society. Her reporting has been seen and heard in MIT Technology Review, NPR, Protocol, Bloomberg CityLab, OneZero, WSJ, Fast Company, and other media outlets.

Kate is the founder of tech and AI ethics reporting website RedTailMedia.org. RedTail has been home to some of her work investigating algorithmic and surveillance tech policy and use in Portland including Banned in PDX, a podcast series about Portland’s facial recognition ban, and an investigation of the city’s collapsed partnership with Google-sibling Replica, a location and mobility tracking company. Kate is the author of the 2009 book on digital voter data use, Campaign ’08: A turning point for digital media.
